보여서 듣지 못한 이야기
동대문 현대시티아울렛에서 아트쉬프트 공간을 홍보하기 위해 엽서 쿠폰을 증정했고, 그 쿠폰을 사용하러 두 분의 시각장애인 손님이 찾아오셨다. 이어폰을 끼고 손끝으로 화면을 눌러 쿠폰을 찾아내셨다. 그리고 정확히 아트쉬프트 쿠폰을 내게 보여주셨다.
잘 보여도 쿠폰을 찾지 못해 헤매는 분들도 많다. 잘 모르겠다며 그냥 나에게 맡겨버리시는 분들도 있다. 그 많은 쿠폰 중 정확하게 아트쉬프트 쿠폰을 찾아내어 보여주셨다. 그 순간 많은 생각이 들었다. 보인다고 보이는 게 아니고, 안 보인다고 안 보이는 게 아니었다.
엽서가 종류가 많아 고를 수 없으니 대표작으로 추천해 달라고 하셨고, 나는 펭귄 그림을 골랐다. 어떤 작품이냐고 물어보셨고, 그림의 영감을 말씀드렸다. 사람들이 펭귄을 보며 “새도 아니고, 뒤뚱거리고, 추운데 날지도 못한다”며 남의 인생에 대해 왈가왈부하는 우리의 모습을 풍자한 것이라고. 사실 이 그림은 내가 힘든 시간을 지나올 때, 많은 사람들이 쉽게 던지는 조언들 속에서 나온 그림이다.
내 설명을 들으시고 짧게 감사하다고 하시며 두 분은 서로를 의지하고 자리를 뜨셨다. 내가 설명해 드린 이미지가 그분들에게 어떻게 전해졌을지는 모르겠다. 많은 분들이 보이기 때문에 작품에 대해 묻지 않는다. 자신이 마음에 드는 것을 빠르게 골라 가져가신다. 그런데 두 분은 작품에 대해 물어보시고, 내 이야기를 끝까지 들어주셨다.
짧은 만남이었지만 나는 많은 생각이 들었다. 보이지 않기 때문에 얼마나 많은 용기와 노력이 필요했을까. 또 나는 보이기 때문에 얼마나 쉽게 멈춰버렸을까. 우리는 보이지 않는 것을 문제라고 생각한다. 하지만 보이는 것 또한 나를 막을 수 있다. 우린 보여서 듣지 못한 이야기가 얼마나 많을까.

Art x Shift
At Hyundai City Outlet in Dongdaemun, ArtShift offered postcard coupons to promote our space, and two visually impaired visitors came to use theirs. They wore earphones and used their fingertips to press the screen, finding the coupon with precision. Then they showed me the ArtShift coupon.
Many people who can see well often struggle to find their coupons. Some say they are not sure and simply hand me their phones. Yet among so many coupons, these two found the ArtShift one exactly. In that moment, many thoughts came to me. Seeing does not always mean truly seeing, and not seeing does not mean being blind.
They said there were too many postcards to choose from and asked me to recommend one. I chose the penguin illustration. They asked what kind of work it was, and I explained. I told them the painting was inspired by how people often look at penguins and say, “They are not really birds, they waddle awkwardly, they cannot even fly.” It was a reflection of how easily we judge other people’s lives. In truth, I created this piece during a difficult time, surrounded by people who offered easy advice.
After listening, they thanked me briefly and left, leaning on each other. I wondered how the image I described might have reached them. Many people who can see never ask about the work. They simply pick what they like and leave. But these two asked, and they listened until the end.
It was a short encounter, but it left me with many thoughts. How much courage and effort must it take to live without sight. And how easily have I, with sight, stopped in fear. We often think that not seeing is the problem, yet what we see can also hold us back. How many stories have we failed to hear because we could see.

저희는 미술작가 부부로서, 예술을 만나는 방식에 변화를 시도하고자 아트쉬프트를 만들었습니다. 아트쉬프트는 예술이 단순한 결과물에 그치지 않고, 예술과 삶, 작가와 관객이 함께 어우러지는 공간입니다. 작업실, 전시공간, 카페, 굿즈샵이 결합된 이곳은 예술가의 창작 과정과 그 안에 담긴 고민, 서사를 자연스럽게 나누며, 예술이 일상 속에 스며드는 문화를 만들어가고자 합니다.
We created Art x Shift with the intention of transforming the way we as a visual artist couple engage with art. Art x Shift is a space where art goes beyond being a mere outcome, becoming a place where art, life, and the connection between artists and audiences coexist. With a combination of a studio, exhibition space, café, and a shop, this space naturally shares the process of creation, the challenges, and narratives within, while fostering a culture where art seamlessly integrates into everyday life.
