예술가 그들의 창조적 저항
처음엔 재능과 재미로 시작한 예술은 칭찬을 넘어 더 큰 인정을 요구하고, 어느새 성공의 열쇠처럼 보인다. 하지만 세상엔 재능 있는 사람이 넘쳐나고, 즉각적인 만족을 주는 것들이 너무 많다. 지나온 열심은 보상을 원하고, 괜찮아 보였던 꿈은 세상에 굴러다니다 닳고 찢어질 것만 같다.
세상은 보이지 않는 내면보다 보이는 것에 먼저 반응한다. 겉모습과 성공에 마음을 빼앗기는 건 너무도 자연스러운 일이다. 예술을 하는 우리도 예외는 아니다. 그래서 내면의 이야기인 예술은 난해하고, 이해받기 어렵고, 그 길을 끝까지 걷는 사람도 많지 않다. 하지만 예술은 바로 그 고독한 자리에서 예술가를 만들어낸다.
예술가라면 누구나 세상의 반응에 상처받고 주저앉는 순간이 있다. 외면받는 자리에서 그만두고 싶은 순간. 하지만 어쩌면 당연한 일일지도 모른다. 커다란 세상 속에서 보이지 않는 것들이 밀리고 상처받고 흔들리는 건 너무도 자연스럽다. 그 당연함을 인정할 때, 우리는 다시 일어설 수 있는 힘을 얻는다.
체념처럼 보일 수 있다. 그러나 포기가 아니다. 현실을 인정해야 그 안에서 자기만의 길을 찾을 수 있다. 어떻게 하면 눈을 돌려줄 수 있을까. 어떤 방식으로 전하면 들릴까. 그것은 세상과의 거리를 재며 징검다리를 놓는 일이다. 그리고 그 징검다리를 놓는 일이야말로 작가가 할 수 있는 가장 창조적인 저항이다.
예술은 아무도 올라가지 않는 산을 홀로 올라가는 일과 같다. 그것은 누군가의 응원이 아니라, 자신과의 싸움이다. 그 고요한 길 위에서 예술가는 자신을 믿는 법을 배우고, 외부의 소리에 흔들리지 않는 법을 익힌다. 그래서 예술은 ‘계속되는 사람’에게 남는다.
작가는 자신의 예술을 가장 먼저 믿어주는 사람이다. 그 믿음은 세상에 맞춰 성공하지 않아도, 인정받지 않아도, 재능이 부족해도 자신을 믿어주겠다는 결심이다. 세상에 증명하기 위해 버티는 것도, ‘반드시 해내겠다’는 집착도 아니다. 누가 뭐라 해도 예술을 믿어주는 사람. 우리가 예술이 바라던 사람이 되어주는 것이다.

The Artist and Their Creative Acts of Resistance
Art often begins with talent and joy. It starts from curiosity, from something that feels light and alive. But soon it asks for more than praise, and begins to crave recognition, as if success were the key to its worth. Yet the world is full of talented people and endless sources of instant satisfaction. The desire for reward grows heavy, and the dream that once seemed bright starts to roll around the world, wearing down and tearing apart.
The world reacts to what it can see before it listens to what cannot be seen. It is natural to be drawn to appearances and visible success. Artists are no exception. That is why art, which speaks from the inner world, is often misunderstood, hard to grasp, and rarely followed to the end. Yet it is precisely in that solitude that the artist is formed.
Every artist has moments when the world’s silence feels unbearable, moments of rejection when all you want is to go home and stop. But perhaps it is only natural. In such a vast world, the unseen will always be pushed aside, bruised, and shaken. When we accept that as truth, we begin to find the strength to rise again.
It may look like resignation, but it is not surrender. Only when we face reality can we discover our own way within it. How can we draw the eyes of the world toward what is unseen? How can we make it heard? That is the work of placing stones one by one, building a bridge across the distance between the world and art. This act itself is the most creative form of resistance an artist can offer.
Art is like climbing a mountain no one else dares to climb. It is not a marathon filled with applause. It is a silent ascent guided only by one’s own breath. On that quiet path, the artist learns to trust themselves, to remain unshaken by the noise outside. And so, art endures with those who continue.
An artist is the first person to believe in their art. That belief is a decision to keep trusting even without success, recognition, or visible talent. It is not endurance for the sake of proving something, nor obsession with achievement. It is the quiet conviction to keep believing, no matter what others say. To become the kind of person art itself has been waiting for.

저희는 미술작가 부부로서, 예술을 만나는 방식에 변화를 시도하고자 아트쉬프트를 만들었습니다. 아트쉬프트는 예술이 단순한 결과물에 그치지 않고, 예술과 삶, 작가와 관객이 함께 어우러지는 공간입니다. 작업실, 전시공간, 카페, 굿즈샵이 결합된 이곳은 예술가의 창작 과정과 그 안에 담긴 고민, 서사를 자연스럽게 나누며, 예술이 일상 속에 스며드는 문화를 만들어가고자 합니다.
We created Art x Shift with the intention of transforming the way we as a visual artist couple engage with art. Art x Shift is a space where art goes beyond being a mere outcome, becoming a place where art, life, and the connection between artists and audiences coexist. With a combination of a studio, exhibition space, café, and a shop, this space naturally shares the process of creation, the challenges, and narratives within, while fostering a culture where art seamlessly integrates into everyday life.
