예술가는 이기적이다
Artists are selfish
예술가들은 종종 이기적으로 보인다. 자기가 하고 싶은 것만 하며 현실을 외면하고, 자기 세계에만 사는 사람처럼 보인다. 많은 예술가는 그저 작업에 몰두하고 있을 뿐이지만, 그 집중은 때로 고집이나 이기심으로 오해받는다. 어쩌면 사람들은 이해되지 않는 열정을 이기심으로 해석하는지도 모르겠다.
맞다. 예술가들은 세상이 원하는 길보다 자신만의 길을 선택한다. 설명되지 않는 어떤 믿음을 따라 움직이고, 이해받기보다는 느끼는 것을 택한다. 사람들의 시선보다 내면의 질문을 좇고, 이미 있는 답보다 뒤집힌 정답의 가능성을 향해 나아간다. 누군가에게는 비합리적이고 미련해 보인다. 그럼에도 예술가는 아직 보지 못한 세계를 포기할 수 없다.
예술가들의 이기심은 욕망이 아니라 방어에 가깝다. 내면을 지키기 위해 선택해야 하는 길이다. 사람들은 묻는다. 왜 이렇게까지 하느냐고. 무엇이 남느냐고. 그러나 모든 것을 말로 설명할 수 없다. 순간의 진실을 말 속에 담으려는 그 순간 진실은 형태를 잃어버린다. 예술은 이해되기 위해 만들어지는 것이 아니다. 존재하기 때문에 의미가 된다.
예술가의 이기심은 숨기기 위해서가 아니라 나누기 위해 시작된다. 자신이 가진 것을 움켜쥐는 사람이 아니라, 보여주기 위해 캐내야 하는 사람이다. 아직 완성되지 않은 세계를 위해 오늘의 확실함도 뒤로 미룬다. 자신만의 시간 속에서 반복하고 무너지고 다시 세운다. 인정이 없어도 계속한다. 아직 보이지 않는 진실이 그 어딘가에 존재한다고 믿기 때문이다.
진짜 이기심은 자신을 채우기 위해 세상을 잊는 것이다. 하지만 예술가는 세상을 채우기 위해 자신을 잊는다. 나를 비워야 비로소 진실이 보인다. 가장 개인적인 것이 가장 보편적이 되고, 혼자의 상처가 모두의 언어가 되며, 한 사람의 질문이 집단의 대답이 된다. 예술가들은 이기적이다. 그리고 그 고집스러운 이기심 덕분에 우리는 누군가의 진실을 만난다.

Art x Shift
Artists often appear selfish. They seem to do only what they want, ignore reality, and live inside their own world. Yet many artists are simply absorbed in their work, following the questions and emotions that arise within them. That focus is easily mistaken for stubbornness or self centeredness. Perhaps people interpret a passion they cannot understand as selfishness.
It is true. Artists choose their own path rather than the one society prefers. They follow a conviction they cannot logically explain, choosing to feel rather than to be understood. They chase the questions within instead of the opinions of others, and move toward possibilities that overturn the obvious answers. To some, they look irrational or foolish. Yet an artist cannot abandon the world they sense but have not yet seen.
An artist’s selfishness is not desire, but protection. It is the only way to safeguard the inner world. People ask why. What do you gain from this. But not everything can be put into words. The moment you try to confine a truth of the moment into language, it loses its shape. Art is not created to be understood. It has meaning simply because it exists.
The artist’s selfishness does not begin in order to keep something, but to give something. They are not clinging to what they have; they are digging to reveal it. For a world that has not yet taken form, they set aside today’s certainty. Alone, they repeat, collapse, and build again. They continue even without recognition. Because they believe that an unseen truth exists.
True selfishness forgets the world to fill oneself. But the artist forgets the self to give something to the world. Only when the self steps aside does truth appear. What is most personal becomes universal, one person’s private wound becomes a shared language, and a single question becomes an answer for many. Artists may look selfish. But because of that stubborn selfishness, we are able to meet someone’s truth.

저희는 미술작가 부부로서, 예술을 만나는 방식에 변화를 시도하고자 아트쉬프트를 만들었습니다. 아트쉬프트는 예술이 단순한 결과물에 그치지 않고, 예술과 삶, 작가와 관객이 함께 어우러지는 공간입니다. 작업실, 전시공간, 카페, 굿즈샵이 결합된 이곳은 예술가의 창작 과정과 그 안에 담긴 고민, 서사를 자연스럽게 나누며, 예술이 일상 속에 스며드는 문화를 만들어가고자 합니다.
We created Art x Shift with the intention of transforming the way we as a visual artist couple engage with art. Art x Shift is a space where art goes beyond being a mere outcome, becoming a place where art, life, and the connection between artists and audiences coexist. With a combination of a studio, exhibition space, café, and a shop, this space naturally shares the process of creation, the challenges, and narratives within, while fostering a culture where art seamlessly integrates into everyday life.
