특별한 사과는 없다
There Is No Special Apple
사람들은 영감을 갑자기 번쩍 떠오르는 순간이라고 생각한다. 예상하지 못한 순간 사과 하나가 하늘에서 떨어지는 것처럼 말이다. 그러나 영감의 본질은 떨어진 사과에 있지 않다. 나는 그 사과를 무심히 지나칠 수도 있고, 멈춰 바라볼 수도 있고, 먹을 수도 있고, 팔 수도 있다. 결국 중요한 것은 영감이 아니라, 영감을 마주하는 나의 태도다.
사과는 때가 되어 떨어지기도 하고, 누군가가 흔들어 떨어뜨리기도 하고, 상해서 떨어지기도 한다. 이유가 어떻든 같은 사과는 하나도 없다. 우리는 그 고유함을 특별함으로 착각하고, 설명하고, 포장하려 한다. 내가 발견한 사과, 세상에 하나뿐인 사과. 그렇게 말하는 순간, 사과는 아이디어가 된다.
그러나 아이디어에 사로잡히면 모든 것이 분석으로 바뀐다. 사과의 크기, 색, 질감, 상처, 향기. 우리는 사과를 설명하느라 모든 에너지를 쓴다. 하지만 예술은 사과를 설명하는 데서 나오지 않는다. 예술은 사과를 통해 사과나무를 보게 하는 것이다. 떨어진 계절을 느끼게 하고, 그 계절의 공기와 시간과 기억 속으로 관객을 데려가는 것이다.
사과는 시작일 뿐이다. 예술은 사과에서 나무로, 나무에서 계절로, 계절에서 시간으로, 시간에서 세계로 확장된다. 보이는 것에서 보이지 않는 것으로, 구체에서 추상으로, 개별에서 보편으로 나아간다. 아이디어는 사과를 붙잡지만, 예술은 사과를 놓아준다.
그러므로 중요한 질문은 하나다. 지금 내가 보고 있는 것은 특별한 사과인가, 아니면 사과를 떨어뜨린 세계인가. 사과 하나를 붙잡고 설명하려 하지 말고, 사과가 떨어진 나무와 뿌리, 그 하늘과 땅을 보아야 한다. 그 사과는 돈이 될 수도, 양식이 될 수도, 세상을 이해하게 할 수도 있다. 예술은 아이디어를 쫓는 것이 아니라, 세상을 바라보는 시선에서 태어난다. 특별한 사과는 없다.

Art x Shift
People think inspiration is a sudden flash, like an apple falling from the sky when you least expect it. But the essence of inspiration is not in the fallen apple itself. I can walk past it without noticing, I can pause and look at it, I can eat it, or I can sell it. What matters is not the inspiration, but my attitude toward encountering it.
An apple may fall because the time has come, because someone shook the tree, or because it has begun to rot. Whatever the reason, no apple is ever the same. We mistake that uniqueness for specialness, and then we begin to explain it and package it. The apple I discovered. The only one in the world. At that moment, the apple becomes an idea.
But once we become obsessed with the idea, everything turns into analysis. The size, the color, the texture, the bruise, the scent. We pour all our energy into describing the apple. Yet art does not come from explaining the apple. Art is what makes the viewer see the tree through the apple. It makes them feel the season when it fell, and leads them into the air, the time, and the memory of that season.
Art begins with the apple, but it does not remain there. Art expands from the apple to the tree, from the tree to the season, from the season to time, and from time to the world. It moves from what is visible to what is invisible, from the concrete to the abstract, from the individual to the universal. An idea holds on to the apple, but art lets the apple go.
Therefore, there is only one essential question. Am I looking at a special apple, or at the world that made it fall. Do not cling to the apple and try to explain it. Look at the tree it fell from, the roots you cannot see, and the sky and the earth that held it. That apple might become money, or become sustenance, or allow you to understand the world. Art is not born from chasing ideas, but from the way we see the world. There is no special apple.

저희는 미술작가 부부로서, 예술을 만나는 방식에 변화를 시도하고자 아트쉬프트를 만들었습니다. 아트쉬프트는 예술이 단순한 결과물에 그치지 않고, 예술과 삶, 작가와 관객이 함께 어우러지는 공간입니다. 작업실, 전시공간, 카페, 굿즈샵이 결합된 이곳은 예술가의 창작 과정과 그 안에 담긴 고민, 서사를 자연스럽게 나누며, 예술이 일상 속에 스며드는 문화를 만들어가고자 합니다.
We created Art x Shift with the intention of transforming the way we as a visual artist couple engage with art. Art x Shift is a space where art goes beyond being a mere outcome, becoming a place where art, life, and the connection between artists and audiences coexist. With a combination of a studio, exhibition space, café, and a shop, this space naturally shares the process of creation, the challenges, and narratives within, while fostering a culture where art seamlessly integrates into everyday life.
