눈이 휘두르는 폭력
THE VIOLENCE WIELDED BY THE EYE
어디를 가도 예술은 돈에 밀린다. 아무리 조리 있게 설명해 보아도 결국 눈앞의 것들을 이길 수 없었다. 실제로 존재해 보이는 것들은 보이지 않는 가치를 밀어버리는데, 눈은 참 폭력적이다. 보인다는 이유만으로 판단이 앞서고, 존재의 진가는 쉽게 지워진다.
프란츠 파농이 말한 것처럼 시선은 단순한 감각이 아니라 타인의 존재를 규정하는 힘이다. 나는 백인의 응시 아래에서 나 자신을 발견했다는 그의 고백은 시각이 어떻게 정체성을 만들고 폭력이 될 수 있는지를 명확하게 보여준다. 이러한 시각의 권력은 예술에서도 예외가 아니다.
카페나 백화점 속에 자리한 아트쉬프트처럼, 예술은 늘 자신의 존재를 증명해야 하는 위치에 놓인다. 예술 앞으로 편하게 가게 하기 위해 일상적인 징검다리를 놓았지만 그것의 가벼움으로 인해 예술의 깊은 의미를 꺼내야 하는 더 많은 과정이 생겨버렸다. 예술은 진실에 닿기까지 많은 의지와 수많은 증명이 필요하며, 보이지 않는 가치는 늘 뒤로 밀린다.
시각이 지배하는 세상에서 예술이나 신앙이나 마음이나 진심처럼 보이지 않는 것들은 쉽게 흔들린다. 그 흔들림조차 보이지 않기에 무너진 줄도 모른 채 살아가거나 사라져 간다. 나는 시각을 한계로 본다. 보이기에 오히려 보지 못한다. 무엇을 보지 못하는지조차 모르는 것이 인간의 운명이기 때문이다.
그렇다면 예술가의 역할은 무엇일까. 세상이 요구하는 보이는 힘에 순응해야 하는 것일까. 아니면 시각을 어떤 목적을 위해 어떻게 사용할 것인지 다시 정의해야 하는 것일까. 결국 문제는 무엇을 보이게 할 것인지가 아니라 왜 보이게 하려 하는가에 있다. 이 질문이 사라지는 순간 예술은 쉽게 길을 잃는다.
예술가들은 보이는 세상에 보이지 않는 것을 가져오는 사람들이다. 보이는 방식으로 소통하되 그 내용과 목적은 예술가 자신의 성찰에서 출발해야 한다. 보이지 않는 가능성을 마음에 품고 사는 태도. 그것만이 예술이 시각의 폭력에 휘둘리지 않는 길이다.

Art x Shift
Wherever I go, art is pushed aside by money. No matter how carefully I try to explain it, it can never win against what stands visibly in front of people. What appears real forces aside what is unseen, and the eye is profoundly violent. The moment something is visible, judgment arrives first. The true weight of an existence is easily erased.
As Frantz Fanon wrote, the gaze is not a simple sensory act but a force that defines the existence of another. His confession that he discovered himself under the gaze of the white man reveals how vision shapes identity and becomes a form of violence. This power of sight does not spare the realm of art.
Art x Shift, placed inside a café or a department store, is constantly asked to prove its own existence. I placed familiar stepping stones to help people reach art comfortably, yet that very lightness demanded even more work to draw out the depth of what art truly carries. Art requires intention and many layers of proof before it reaches truth, and what is unseen is always pushed to the back.
In a world ruled by sight, things like art, faith, the heart, and sincerity are easily shaken. The shaking itself is invisible, so many live or disappear without even knowing they have collapsed. I see sight as a limitation. Because we see, we fail to see. And not knowing what we are unable to see may be the fate of being human.
Then what is the role of the artist. Should we yield to the power of visibility that the world demands. Or must we redefine why and how we use sight in the first place. The question is not what to make visible but why we want something to be seen. When this question disappears, art quickly loses its direction.
Artists bring the unseen into the visible world. They communicate through visible forms, but the content and purpose must begin from their own inner reflection. A way of living that holds unseen possibilities in the heart. That alone keeps art from being swept away by the violence of sight.

저희는 미술작가 부부로서, 예술을 만나는 방식에 변화를 시도하고자 아트쉬프트를 만들었습니다. 아트쉬프트는 예술이 단순한 결과물에 그치지 않고, 예술과 삶, 작가와 관객이 함께 어우러지는 공간입니다. 작업실, 전시공간, 카페, 굿즈샵이 결합된 이곳은 예술가의 창작 과정과 그 안에 담긴 고민, 서사를 자연스럽게 나누며, 예술이 일상 속에 스며드는 문화를 만들어가고자 합니다.
We created Art x Shift with the intention of transforming the way we as a visual artist couple engage with art. Art x Shift is a space where art goes beyond being a mere outcome, becoming a place where art, life, and the connection between artists and audiences coexist. With a combination of a studio, exhibition space, café, and a shop, this space naturally shares the process of creation, the challenges, and narratives within, while fostering a culture where art seamlessly integrates into everyday life.
