닿을 수 있는 만큼
As Far as I Can Reach
나는 결국 내가 할 수 있는 모든 것을 할 것이다. 어차피 예술에 마음이 없는 사람에게 아무리 설명해도 관심은 생기지 않는다. 수학 문제집을 아무리 들이밀어도 눈길조차 주지 않듯이 마음이 향하지 않은 세계는 서로에게 닿지 않는다. 이것은 슬픈 일이 아니다. 단지 세계가 작동하는 방식일 뿐이다. 억지로 끌어들일 수도 없고 억지로 설득할 수도 없다. 마음은 이끌리는 곳으로 간다.
예술을 사랑하는 사람들은 끝내 그 세계에 머문다. 하나님을 사랑하는 사람에게 하나님 이야기가 가장 진지하고 즐겁듯이 마음이 향한 자리는 결국 그 마음을 끝까지 끌어당긴다. 그것은 선택이라기보다 이끌림에 가깝다. 사랑은 사랑으로 돌아온다. 이것이 내가 믿는 유일한 법칙이다. 그러니 나는 이미 이끌린 이들을 위해 존재하면 된다. 언젠가 올 이들을 위해서도.
무거움은 가벼움에게 무겁다고 손가락질받고 더 무거운 이들은 나를 가볍다고 말할 것이다. 어떤 자리에서는 내가 하는 일이 예술도 아니라 하고 다른 자리에서는 가식적이라고도 할 것이다. 그래서 나는 어느 곳에도 완전히 속하지 않는다. 그러나 바로 그 경계에서만 할 수 있는 일이 있다. 무거운 것을 가볍게 전하고 가벼운 것에서 무게를 발견하는 일이다. 그것이 내가 서 있는 자리다. 그러니 담대함만이 나를 지키는 유일한 태도다. 수많은 사람들 가운데 나 같은 사람도 있는 거다.
글이 나오면 글로 하고 그림이 나오면 그림으로 하고 카페가 필요하면 카페로 하고 인스타가 필요하면 인스타로 한다. 그것들은 단지 도구이고 방식일 뿐이다. 소통의 형태는 바뀌어도 중심이 흔들리거나 내용이 변하는 것은 아니다. 중요한 것은 닿는 것이다. 조각을 정면에서만 보는 사람과 측면에서 보는 사람이 서로 다른 형태를 말하듯 인생도 그렇다. 나는 내 뒷모습을 본 적 없지만 누군가는 그 뒷모습으로 나를 알아본다. 모든 존재는 동시에 여러 앞면을 가지고 있다. 어쩌면 모두 앞면이다.
인생은 종이에 닿은 붓처럼 매일 조금씩 다른 모습을 그린다. 어제와 오늘이 다르고 내일은 또 다른 모습일 것이다. 멈춰도 괜찮고 쉬어도 괜찮고 다른 모양이어도 괜찮다. 우리는 늘 완성을 원하지만 언젠가 내 시작과 마지막이 맞닿는 순간이 온다면 그때 나는 이 모든 것을 이해하게 되리라 믿는다. 그때까지 나는 할 수 있는 일을 한다. 이끌린 대로 주어진 대로 닿을 수 있는 만큼. 그것으로 충분하다.

Art x Shift
I will eventually do everything I can do. No matter how much I explain, those who do not care for art will not suddenly become interested. Just as you would not look at a math workbook no matter how often it is pushed toward you, a heart that is not drawn to a world cannot meet it. This is not a sad truth. It is simply how the world works. You cannot force someone in, nor can you convince a heart against its direction. The heart goes where it is drawn.
Those who love art remain in that world. Just as those who love God find His stories the most serious and the most joyful, the place the heart leans toward is the place that pulls it to the end. It is less a choice than a pull. Love returns to love. This is the only law I trust. So I exist for those who have already been drawn, and for those who will someday arrive.
Heaviness is accused of being too heavy by those who feel light, and the heavier ones call me light. In some places they will say what I do is not art at all, and in others they will say it is insincere. So I do not belong completely anywhere. Yet there are things that can only be done at the edge. To carry what is heavy lightly, and to find weight inside what seems light. This is where I stand. And courage is the only posture that keeps me steady. Among countless people, someone like me also belongs.
When words come, I speak. When images come, I create. When I need a cafe, I run a cafe. When I need Instagram, I use Instagram. These are merely tools and methods. The form of communication may shift, but the center does not. What matters is reaching. A sculpture looks different from the front and from the side, and our lives are the same. I have never seen my own back, yet someone recognizes me from it. Every being has several faces at once. Perhaps all of them are the front.
Life draws a different line each day, like a brush touching paper. Yesterday’s shape and today’s shape are not the same, and tomorrow will be different again. It is fine to pause, fine to rest, fine to take another form. We desire completion in every moment, yet if the day comes when my beginning meets my end, I believe I will understand all of this. Until then, I simply do what I can. As I am drawn, as I am given, as far as I can reach. And that is enough.

저희는 미술작가 부부로서, 예술을 만나는 방식에 변화를 시도하고자 아트쉬프트를 만들었습니다. 아트쉬프트는 예술이 단순한 결과물에 그치지 않고, 예술과 삶, 작가와 관객이 함께 어우러지는 공간입니다. 작업실, 전시공간, 카페, 굿즈샵이 결합된 이곳은 예술가의 창작 과정과 그 안에 담긴 고민, 서사를 자연스럽게 나누며, 예술이 일상 속에 스며드는 문화를 만들어가고자 합니다.
We created Art x Shift with the intention of transforming the way we as a visual artist couple engage with art. Art x Shift is a space where art goes beyond being a mere outcome, becoming a place where art, life, and the connection between artists and audiences coexist. With a combination of a studio, exhibition space, café, and a shop, this space naturally shares the process of creation, the challenges, and narratives within, while fostering a culture where art seamlessly integrates into everyday life.
