Bread or Paint
인간은 육과 혼과 영이 겹쳐 있다. 이 셋은 동시에 커지지 않는다. 하나가 앞에 나오면 다른 하나는 자연스럽게 물러난다. 그래서 삶은 늘 균형의 문제다. 매 순간 나는 지금 어떤 기준으로 선택하고 있는지 스스로에게 묻게 된다.
보통 영혼이라는 말로 내면을 묶어 말하지만 혼과 영은 엄연히 다르게 작동한다. 혼은 생각과 지식, 인지의 영역이다. 배가 고픈지 아픈지 졸린지 판단하고 세상이 어떻게 돌아가는지를 이해한다. 혼은 육을 보호하기 위해 일한다. 아주 현실적이고 필수적인 기능이다.
영은 다른 방향으로 작동한다. 배고픔과 아픔을 느끼지만 그것에 머물지 않게 만든다. 내 생존보다 다른 사람의 아픔이 더 크게 다가오는 순간이 있다. 그 선택은 계산보다 먼저 나온다. 생존과 직결된 돈일 수도 있고 시간일 수도 있고 안전일 수도 있다. 영의 본질은 사랑에 가깝다.
우리는 이 셋을 기준 삼아 매 순간 선택하며 살아간다. 누구는 육의 가치가 크고 누구는 혼의 판단에 익숙하며 누구는 영의 방향에 더 민감하다. 기준을 어디에 두느냐에 따라 삶의 모양은 완전히 달라진다. 무엇을 중요하게 여기는지가 곧 그 사람의 세계가 된다.
예술로 번 돈으로 배를 채울 수는 있지만 진정한 작품들은 그것을 목적으로 세상에 나오지 않는다. 예술하면 배고프다는 말은 틀리지 않다. 생존의 언어와 영의 언어가 만나는 순간 하나는 늘 상처 입는다. 그럼에도 배가 고파도 빵 대신 물감을 선택했던 사람들이 있었다. 남들은 그 선택을 미련하다고 말했지만 그들이 끝까지 그 길을 이어왔기에 우리는 아직도 예술을 말하고 사랑을 말한다.

Human beings are made of body, soul, and spirit, layered together. These three do not grow at the same time. When one moves forward, the others naturally step back. Life is always a matter of balance. In every moment, I ask myself what my ground is, and what is guiding my choice right now.
We often use the word soul to describe the inner life as a whole, but soul and spirit do not work the same way. The soul belongs to thought, knowledge, and cognition. It judges hunger, pain, and fatigue. It understands how the world functions. The soul works to protect the body. It is practical, realistic, and necessary.
The spirit moves in a different direction. It feels hunger and pain, yet does not remain there. There are moments when another person’s suffering weighs more than my own survival. In those moments, the decision comes before calculation. It may be money, time, or even safety. The nature of the spirit is closest to love.
We live by choosing, again and again, which of these becomes our ground. For some, the body takes priority. For others, the spirit is more sensitive and demanding. Where we place our ground shapes the form of our lives. What we value most becomes the world we live in.
Art can earn money and fill the stomach, but true works are not born for that purpose. The saying that artists are always hungry is not wrong. When the language of survival meets the language of spirit, one is bound to be damaged. Still, there were those who chose paint over bread, even in hunger. Others called it foolish. Yet because they endured that choice, we are still able to speak about art, and about love.
