증명하느라 못한 사랑
The Love We Lost to Proof
떡볶이가 좋아서 떡볶이를 먹는 것과, 떡볶이를 먹으니까 떡볶이를 좋아하는 게 틀림없다고 말하는 것은 다르다. 전자는 마음에서 행동으로 나아간 것이고, 후자는 행동을 근거로 마음을 증명하려는 시도다. 사랑은 증명될 수 없다. 증명되는 순간, 그것은 이미 사랑이 아니라 고정된 관념이 된다.
마찬가지로 하나님을 사랑하기 때문에 율법을 지킨다는 말은 맞다. 그러나 율법을 지킨다고 해서 하나님을 사랑하고 있다고 말할 수는 없다. 또한 율법을 지키지 못했다고 사랑하지 않는다고 단정할 수도 없다. 하나님을 사랑해서 교회를 짓고, 헌금을 하고, 선교를 떠날 수는 있다. 그러나 교회와 헌금과 선교 자체가 하나님을 사랑한다는 증거가 되지는 않는다. 행위는 사랑에서 흘러나올 수는 있어도, 행위가 사랑을 만들어내지는 못한다.
그래서 사랑이 무엇인지, 믿음은 어떤 것인지, 하나님은 어떤 분인지를 스스로 판단하고 정의해 버리는 일은 위험하다. 그렇게 정립된 세계 안에서 사람은 자신을 가장 의로운 자리에 세운다. 예수님은 경고하신다. 주여 주여 하는 자마다 천국에 들어가는 것이 아니다. 의로운 행위로 가득 찬 사람이 정작 하나님을 모를 수도 있다는 것이다.
사랑은 원래 세우는 힘이 아니다. 사랑은 쌓아 올린 의를 무너뜨리고, 붙잡아 온 기준을 허물며, 선과 정의를 무력하게 통과해 버릴 만큼 강력한 힘이다. 바리새인들은 율법을 철저히 지키며 그것이 곧 사랑이라 믿었고, 그 사랑을 증명하려 했다. 그러나 예수님은 율법에 갇힌 이들을 사랑으로 해방하셨다. 그래서 사랑이 율법의 완성이라 하신다.
하나님은 지식과 경험으로 쌓아 올린 모든 것을 거두어 가시고, 사랑하라는 방향만 남겨두신다. 큰 지도는 보여주지 않으신 채, 화살표 하나만 따라오라 하신다. 우리의 과제는 사랑을 정의하고 그 사랑을 증명해 내는 것이 아니라, 사랑하려는 의지만 가지고 그 자리에 서 있는 것이다. 우리는 사랑을 끝까지 알지 못할 것이다. 그러나 하나님은 사랑으로 살아내게 하실 것이다.

Liking tteokbokki and therefore eating it is different from eating tteokbokki and concluding that you must like it. The first moves from the heart to action. The second tries to prove the heart by action. Love cannot be proven. The moment it is proven, it is no longer love but a fixed idea.
In the same way, it is true to say that we keep the law because we love God. But keeping the law does not prove that we love God. Failing to keep the law does not prove that we do not love Him either. One may love God and therefore build churches, give offerings, or go on missions. Yet churches, offerings, and missions themselves are not evidence of loving God. Actions may flow from love, but actions do not produce love.
For this reason, it is dangerous to decide for ourselves what love is, what faith is, and who God is. Once a person believes they have defined these things, they place themselves at the most righteous position within the world they have constructed. Jesus warns us. Not everyone who says Lord Lord will enter the kingdom of heaven. A person full of righteous deeds may, in fact, not know God at all.
Love is not a force that builds. Love is a force strong enough to tear down accumulated righteousness, to dismantle long held standards, and to pass through goodness and justice as if they hold no power over it. The Pharisees kept the law meticulously and believed that this was love. They tried to prove their love through it. But Jesus freed those trapped by the law through love. Love could transcend the law because love was the fulfillment of the law.
God takes away everything we have built through knowledge and experience and leaves only one direction: love. He does not give us a detailed map, only a single arrow and asks us to follow it. Our task is not to define love or to prove it, but to stand in that place with the will to love. We will never fully know love. But God will cause us to live it.
