Business: imports & sells new vehicles in Japan (especially EVs and fuel-cell), provides after-sales, service network etc.
It also handles commercial vehicles under its “商用車事業室” (commercial vehicles division).
History & Strategy in Japan
Hyundai originally entered Japan (early 2000s), but withdrew the passenger car division in 2009 due to poor sales.
In 2022, it re-entered the Japanese passenger car market under the new name “Hyundai Mobility Japan”, focusing on green technologies (electric vehicles, hydrogen fuel cell) and using an online-led sales model. Pre-orders started May 2022; deliveries in July.
Recent & Key Moves
Inster: Hyundai launched Inster, a compact EV priced around ¥2.85 million (~US$18,000) in Japan, as a strategy to better penetrate Japan’s more conservative EV market.
By using online sales & focusing on eco-friendly vehicles, Hyundai aims to raise its sales in Japan significantly over coming years.
Expansion of its product line includes Ioniq 5 (EV), hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (like Nexo), etc.
