오래전 다니엘이라는 사람이 있었습니다. 그는 바빌론의 왕을 위해 일하고 있었습니다.
다니엘은 지혜로웠으며 열심히 일했습니다. 다리우스 왕은 나라의 모든 일을 그에게 맡길 생각이었습니다.
왕을 위해 일하던 다른 사람들은 이런 다니엘을 싫어했습니다.
그들은 급히 다리우스 왕을 찾아가 말했습니다. "위대한 왕이시여, 앞으로 30일 동안 모든 사람이 당신에게 기도해야 한다는 법을 만들어 주십시오. 그리고 그 법을 어기는 사람들은 사자 굴에 던져 잡아먹히게 해야 합니다!"
다리우스 왕이 말했습니다. "내가 명령하니, 나 말고 다른 신에게 기도하는 사람은 사자 굴에 던져질 것이다."
다니엘은 새로운 법에 대해 들었지만, 하나님에게 기도하는 것을 멈추지 않았습니다. 그는 고난이 닥쳤을 때 하나님을 믿었습니다.
왕은 슬펐습니다. 그러나 법대로 다니엘을 처벌해야 했습니다.
군인들이 다니엘을 굶주린 사자 굴에 던져 넣고 나서 나오지 못하도록 커다란 돌로 입구를 막았습니다.
왕은 다니엘을 걱정하여 아무것도 먹지 못하고 밤을 지새웠습니다.
다음 날 아침 다리우스 왕은 사자 굴로 달려가 말했습니다. "다니엘, 다니엘, 살아있느냐? 너의 하나님이 너를 사자들에게서 구해주었느냐?"
다니엘이 대답했습니다. "하나님이 천사를 보내 사자들의 입을 막아서, 사자들이 저를 해치지 못했습니다."
다리우스 왕은 기뻤습니다. 그는 군인들에게 다니엘을 사자 굴에서 꺼내주라고 명령했습니다.
왕은 온 나라 사람들에게 글을 내려 하나님을 사랑하고 하나님 뜻에 따르도록 했습니다.
그는 하나님이 사람들을 건지고 구원하신다고 썼습니다.
There once was a man named Daniel. He worked for the king of Babylon.
Daniel was wise and worked hard. King Darius planned to set him over the whole kingdom.
The other men who worked for the king were not happy for Daniel.
They hurried to King Darius and said, "O great king, you should make a law that everyone must pray to you for 30 days. If anyone does not obey this law, they should be thrown into a den of lions to be eaten!"
"I will make the law," King Darius said, "If anyone prays to any god but me, he will be thrown into a den of lions."
Daniel heard about the new law. But he did not stop praying to God. He trusted God when trouble came.
The king was sad. But he had to punish Daniel because of the law.
The soldiers threw Daniel into the den of hungry lions. They put a big stone over the door so Daniel could not get out.
The king could not eat. He could not sleep. He was sad about Daniel.
The next morning King Darius ran to the lion's den. "Daniel, Daniel are you alive? Did your God save you from the lions?"
Daniel answered, "God sent an angel to shut the mouths of the lions. They have not hurt me."
King Darius was happy. He told the soldiers to let Daniel out of the lion's den.
The king wrote a letter to everyone saying they should love and obey God.
He wrote that God rescues and saves people.
