유명한 작품 속 글을 발췌하였습니다. 이를 읽고 앞이나 뒤 이야기를 채워보세요. 읽은 소감도 좋고 자신만의 방식으로 다시 글을 적거나 작가 혹은 주인공과 대화를 나누어도 됩니다.
주제 2
영국에 살면서 맞닥뜨릴 수 있는 다양한 글쓰기, 읽기 상황을 꾸며봤습니다. 실제 경험한 일도 있고 주변 사람이 겪은 일, 방송이나 영화에서 본 내용을 바탕으로 쓴 글도 있습니다. 제가 직접 작성한 글이니 영어가 어색하더라도 이해해 주세요.

미국 출신 작가이자 저널리스트로 유명한 디디온은 한국에서는 비교적 덜 알려져 있지만 '작가의 작가'로 불릴 정도로 자신만의 독특한 문체와 저널리즘 정신으로 영향력을 발휘한 작가입니다.
사랑하는 사람을 갑작스레 잃고서 겪을 수 있는 상실감과 정신적 방황을 시적인 문장으로 아름답게 표현한 책입니다. 저에게는, 글 자체가 좋아 문장 하나하나 낭독하는 방식으로 읽어낸 책입니다. 작가의 다른 작품도 마찬가지고요.
슬퍼서 눈물을 짜게 만드는 글이 아니라, 아무 이유 없이 내 옆에 누군가 있어 줄 것 같고, 또 손을 내밀면 같이 울거나 웃어줄 것 같은 그런 안정감을 주는 책입니다. 또, 어떤 슬픔 앞에서도 혼자 마음을 다독이게 해주는 책이 아닐까 싶습니다.
위 글은, 남편을 잃은 뒤 1주기에 이르기까지 저자가 겪은 혼란스러운 심정을 표현하고 있습니다. 저널리스트로 수많은 이의 죽음을 직간접적으로 목격하고 이를 기정화 된 사실로 여기며 글을 쓰던 저자가 정작 자기 가족의 죽음 앞에서 벌어지는 일련의 일들을 꿈속의 장면처럼 비현실적으로 바라보게 됩니다.
병원에서 받은 남편의 소지품을 들고 오면서 이를 유품이 아니라, 남편이 돌아오면 사용할 물품이라 여기는 저자의 행동이 대표적입니다. 혼자 판단하기 힘든 상황에 접하면 늘 하던 것처럼 남편의 조언을 듣고자 남편에게 말을 거는 행동도 마찬가지입니다. 남편의 공백을 지각하면서도 평소 습관대로 행동을 계속 되풀이하는데, 작가는 이를 책 영어 제목에서처럼, '마법의 생각 (Magical Thinking)'이라 부릅니다.

보충 설명: 영국의 범죄 예방 프로그램에서 시청한 내용을 바탕으로 적어본 글입니다.
아파트에 도둑이 들고 건물이 손상되는 일이 발생했다고 합니다. 다수가 이용하는 공동 현관의 문을 일부 주민이 잠기지 않도록 해두어 외부인이 출입하는 바람에 이런 범죄가 발생한 것으로 경찰이 추정합니다.
위 글은 아파트 관리 직원끼리 나누는 대화 내용이라 할 수 있습니다.
영국에는 비밀번호를 입력하여 여는 형태의 문도 있지만 아직도 전통적인 자물쇠를 사용하는 집과 건물이 많습니다. 비밀번호를 이용한다 하더라도, 다수의 주민이 거주하는 공동 현관의 잠금장치를 멋대로 해제해 놓거나 문지방에 작은 물체를 끼워 문이 완전히 닫히지 않도록 하는 경우도 있습니다. 간편하게 들어설 수 있도록 말이죠.
범죄 예방 차원에서 이런 행동을 금해 달라는 대주민 호소문을 작성해 봅시다.

Dear residents,
It has been brought to our attention that there was another case of thefts and graffiti in our building last weekend.
May I remind you that only recently, new CCTV cameras were installed and locks were replaced for the front gate as requested by you? The criminals, however, had no problem infiltrating our premises.
As the police pointed out, the front gate had not been properly locked. Not for the first time though. Therefore the outsiders were able to come and go freely.
If we continue to behave this way, no matter how strong and safe security systems we have, we won’t be able to stop the thugs from ruining our life.
Please be warned that now we have no choice but to resort to our residential rule for the communal area: Residents are to keep the doors of the communal space constantly locked unless any emergencies arise.
Those who violate this rule will be given a written warning first and will be asked to leave our building permanently when they reoffend.
