수도원 가든 디자인 수업
많은 가든 디자인 수업을 하지만
이번 수업처럼 마음이 절절한 교감은 그리 흔치 않습니다.
그런데 어제, 지난 일요일 아침부터 오후 까지의 수업은 제게 더 큰 위로를
주는 수업이었습니다. 학생들을 가르치다 보면 뭘 가르친다기 보다 나눔과
영감을 주고 받는 느낌이 큽니다.
성북동 도미니크 수도원을 피정과 힐링 공간으로 가꿔 도심속 자주 머무는
기도와 치유의 공간으로 가꿔가는 과정은 2명의 수녀님과 5명의 성당 봉사자
분들이 마음을 모으며 시작되었습니다 .
봉사자 분들은 아무 의심없이 정원꾸밀 때 함께 도와주실
손이 필요하다는 요청에 선뜻 함께 하시게 되었습니다.
어제, 수도원에서 수업, 7차 수업을 진행하는 과정은
이제 수도원 정원디자인 초안 스토리와 컨셉을 잡는 일이었습니다
우선 저는 학생들에게 대상지 현장 사진을 찍어오고,
그 공간이 어떻게 바뀌면 좋은지 의견을 내라고 했지요.
의견을 내는 방식은
1) 피정 공간으로서의 기능과,
2) 그곳에 담고 싶은 스토리의 내용이 무엇인지 말하게 하고,
3) 그 다음 그렇다면 그 기능과 스토리는 가든 랭귀지의
무슨 요소를 담아 표현하면 좋을지 각자 말하게 했어요 .
가든 랭귀지(Garden Language)는 특히 스토리와 활용 목적을 말했기에
그다음 구조, 형태, 색, 빛, 향기, 소리 등의 무엇을 중심으로 표현할지 말하게 했어요 .
그리고 그들이 그것을 말하는 동안 나는 그들의 말을 기본 구상 스케치로 쓱쓱
그리며 말이 끝나면 곧 보여주고, 제시된 의견의 표현이 맞는지
확인하는 방식으로 공간 구상과 디자인 방향을 보여주며 강의를 진행했죠
스토리로부터 공간 구상 디자인 스케치로 표현해가는 과정을 보여준 것입니다.
물론 다들 수업을 하며 너무 좋아했어요.
말을 하면서 자기들 생각이
곧 수도원에 어떤 모습의 정원으로 완성될지
보는 것이 너무 기뻤다고,
그리고 그런 의견이 곧 그렇게 재현될 것이라는
기대감에 너무들 좋아했죠. 그리고 그들의 눈빛을 잊을 수가 없어요.
" 똥그랗고 맑은 눈을 초롱 초롱 빛내며 나를 바라보는 눈빛 ..."
그리고 제가 맛나게 먹는다고 새콤하고 맛있는 자두와,
고기를 집에서 직접
요리해와 점심을 챙겨 주시던 모습.
바삭 바삭한 애그 타르트를 가져와
하나씩 먹고는 남은 것을 가져가시라고 챙겨주는 마음들이
너무 이쁘고 고맙고 감동이었어요 .
늘 그렇지만 학생들을 가르칠 때 저는 그 사람들의
그 이쁜 눈망울과 표정들이 너무나 사랑스러워요 .
그래서 가르치는 일이 좋습니다.
그리고 어제의 결정타 하이라이트
수녀님께서 혼자 말처럼 마지막 수업을 털며 일어날 때 하신 말씀
" 난 어디 프랑스 몽마르뜨 언덕에 와 있는 줄 알았어요"
" 우리가 말을 하면 선생님이 슥슥 그림을 그려 주시는 그 모습이,
프랑스 파리 몽마르뜨 언덕에서 화가 앞에 앉아 그림 그리는 모습을 보는 것 같았어요 "
그리고 그 말은 나를 말할 수 없이 따듯하게 해 주었습니다
그리고 훅 치고 들어오며 내 마음을 달랩니다
"아 내 것, 내 삶을 위한 직업과 내가 좋아하는 콘텐츠가
이렇게 사람들에게 도움이 될 수도 있구나,
내가 느 사소한 일처럼 여기고 느끼고 생각하고 있어도,
내가 생각하는 것보다 훨씬 사람들이 많이 느끼고
더 좋아할 수 있구나, 그것도 아주 많은 양을 더 강하게 말이다.
그리고 그들의 느낌이 내게 전해지는 것 또한
크고 엄청난 것이구나 "라고 느끼게 되었습니다.
이 느낌과 깨달음을 다시 외국친구와 교류하며 영어로도 잠시 정리합니다
Yesterday, the process of conducting a class at the monastery was to come up with
<a draft story and concept for the monastery garden design>.
And I asked the students to take pictures of the scene and give their opinions on
how the space should be changed.
The way to express opinions was to have each person say
1) the function as a retreat space,
2) the content of the story they wanted to include there, and
3) then what elements of garden language would be good to express that function and story. Garden language specifically talked about the story and purpose of use,
so I had them talk about what to express, such as structure, form, color, light, scent,
and sound. And while they were talking,
I sketched out their words as a basic concept and showed it to them
as soon as they finished speaking to check if their opinions were correct.
I gave the lecture by showing the spatial plan and design direction.
It shows the process of expressing a space concept design sketch from a story.
Of course, everyone really enjoyed the class.
As they talked, they thought about what kind of garden the monastery
would soon have.
thery are so happy to see it, and they are so excited that such opinions
would soon be repeated. And I can't forget the look in their eyes.
The way they looked at me with their bright, clear eyes...
And the way they cooked sour and delicious plums and meat at home
for me for lunch because I enjoyed it.
The way they brought in crunchy egg tarts,
ate them one by one, and told me to take
the rest back was so pretty and I was so grateful and touched.
As always, when I teach students,
I love their pretty eyes and facial expressions.
That's why I like teaching.
And yesterday's final blow highlight is a words of a nun said
when she got up from the last class like she speak to herself
“I thought I was somewhere on the hill of Montmartre, France.”
“The way the teacher drew a picture while we talked was like sitting
in front of an artist drawing a picture on the hill of Montmartre in Paris,
France.”And the words heat me " oh mines, my contents for my living job
and that I like can help people as like this,
even I feel & think & treat it as like a tiny thing ,
hey can feel & like this much then I never expect that strong and amount .
They feel like it huge things"
And those words warmed me indescribably
And it comes rushing in and soothes my heart
“Ah, it’s mine, a job for my life and content I like.
This could be helpful to people,
Even if I feel and think about it as a trivial matter,
A lot more people feel this than I think
You can like it more, even more strongly in large quantities.
And their feelings are conveyed to me as well.
I felt like it was something big and enormous.
