> WHEN I at length recovered my senses, I found myself partially unclothed, and supported in the arms of Augustus.

> We were in the main cabin of the brig, and on a mattress, the weather being warm and pleasant.

In the meantime, the brig was nearly water-logged, and it was only by the greatest exertion that she could be kept afloat.

Augustus said that he would bring me something to eat in a few minutes, and then go on deck to see how things stood.

In the meantime, he left me a can of cold water, and a copy of the “Caledonian Magazine,” for June, which he had brought from the cabin of the mate.

This magazine had nothing remarkable in it, but I read the whole of it with the utmost avidity, from a desire to escape, if possible, from the sense of the desolation and horror which encompassed me.

A mutiny, he said, had already broken out.

The cook, the negro — the only man of color on board — had headed the revolt, and with the assistance of most of the crew, had murdered the captain and the second mate.

He had now complete control of the brig, and had thrown overboard all the bodies of those who had been killed.

Augustus himself had only escaped death by professing his willingness to join the mutineers.

He had not even been allowed to go below until now, and it was only with the greatest difficulty that he had succeeded in bringing me a few mouthfuls of gruel.

Chapter IV (제4장)
Dirk Peters was the son of an American fur-trader living in the western regions.

His mother was an Indian of the tribe of the Upsarokas, or Crow Indians.
그의 어머니는 업사로카 족, 즉 크로우 인디언 부족 출신이었다.
He was short in stature, not more than four feet eight inches high, but his limbs were of Herculean mould.

His arms, as well as legs, were bowed in the most singular manner, and appeared to possess no flexibility whatever.

His head was equally deformed, being of immense size, with an indentation on the crown (like that on the head of most negroes), and entirely bald.

This latter peculiarity gave a wild and startling expression to his countenance, which was otherwise singularly ferocious and repulsive.

His hands were large beyond all proportion, and his arms, as well as thighs, were covered with long coarse black hair.

This monster, to the surprise of all, had joined the mutiny, not withstanding his having been treated with unusual kindness by the captain and mate.

He seemed, indeed, to have been the main instigator of the outrage.

In the meantime the brig was still laboring in the tremendous sea, and it seemed impossible she could much longer hold together.

Every moment, too, we were in danger of drifting upon the coast.

A few hours after Augustus had left me, he came again, bringing with him Dirk Peters.

The latter, it seemed, had conceived a friendship for my friend, and had offered, in the event of another outbreak, to stand by him and assist him in any enterprise.

This offer had been joyfully accepted, and Augustus had now come to consult with me upon the possibility of regaining the brig by force.

The chances of success were said to be very great.

We resolved to make the attempt that night, at midnight.

Peters was to bring with him one of the axes belonging to the mate’s stores, and we were to proceed boldly through the cabin to the forecastle, cut down the watch, and then rouse up our own friends.

I now began to reflect seriously upon our attempt.

Still, I felt that some such scene must be enacted, if we hoped to escape, and looked forward to the event with the most intense anxiety.

He was accompanied by Augustus, who gave me some more water, and a small quantity of bread and meat.

They both pressed me to use the utmost dispatch, as the night was nearly spent.

When we had nearly reached it, we heard two voices in loud dispute, and presently a third joined in the quarrel.

We had not time to deliberate, and Peters rushed in at once, followed by Augustus and myself.

The contest was short, indeed.

Two of the mutineers were shot dead, and the third was brought to the deck with a blow from the axe.

We then called in the name of the captain, and ordered the others to yield, threatening instant death if they refused.

Terrified and still stupefied from drink, they submitted without resistance.
