> We soon found ourselves masters of the brig.
우리는 곧 브리그선의 주인이 되었다.
> The mutineers, thoroughly overcome and disheartened, made no further resistance, and submitted quietly to our orders.
반란자들은 완전히 제압당하고 기세가 꺾여, 더 이상의 저항 없이 우리의 명령에 조용히 따랐다.
> Dirk Peters proved himself a perfect demon in combat.
디르크 피터스는 전투 중 마치 악마처럼 날뛰었다.
> He appeared to be insensible to fear, and went on with the work of butchery as if his soul thirsted for blood.

> In less than half an hour, we had everything arranged as we desired.

> These fellows were of Norwegian descent, and were rather simple-minded — we had little difficulty with them.

> We took in all sail at night, and lay to under a close-reefed foresail.

In the morning it was found that one of the Norwegian prisoners had died during the night.
다음 날 아침, 노르웨이계 포로 중 한 명이 밤사이 사망한 것이 발견되었다.
He had been wounded in the scuffle, and the motion of the vessel had served to produce mortification.
그는 싸움 중 부상을 입었고, 배의 흔들림으로 인해 상처가 괴사한 것이었다.
Another of them was found to be in a dying condition, and he died a few hours afterward.
또 다른 포로 한 명은 거의 죽기 직전의 상태였으며, 몇 시간 뒤에 숨을 거두었다.
This left only two of the mutineers who were not directly concerned in the murder of the officers.
이로써 장교 살해에 직접 가담하지 않았던 반란자는 단 두 명만 남게 되었다.
We now held a council as to what course we should pursue.
우리는 이제 어떤 항로를 취해야 할지에 대한 회의를 열었다.
We had no means of ascertaining the precise longitude, and there were only two among us who knew anything of navigation.
우리는 정확한 경도를 측정할 방법이 없었고, 항해술을 조금이라도 아는 자는 단 두 명뿐이었다.
These were Augustus and Dirk Peters.
그 두 사람은 어거스터스와 디르크 피터스였다.
It was resolved, however, to turn the brig’s head to the northward, as we had reason to believe ourselves in the vicinity of the Bermudas.
우리는 브리그선의 머리를 북쪽으로 돌리기로 결정했다. 우리는 지금 버뮤다 근처에 있다고 믿을 만한 이유가 있었기 때문이다.
We accordingly made sail, and kept the brig as near the wind as possible.
그리하여 우리는 돛을 달고, 최대한 바람을 따라 북쪽으로 항해하기 시작했다.
By the most strenuous exertion, and frequent use of the pump, we succeeded in keeping her free.
우리는 끊임없는 노력과 펌프질 덕분에 겨우 침수를 막을 수 있었다.
In this manner we went on for three days, when the wind, after shifting about for some hours, finally settled in the southeast, and bore us with great rapidity towards the north-northwest.
우리는 이렇게 삼 일 동안 항해를 계속했고, 바람은 몇 시간 동안 방향을 바꾸다가 마침내 남동풍으로 고정되어, 북북서 방향으로 빠르게 나아가게 해주었다.
Our prisoners were still kept in close confinement, and seemed to be perfectly passive and contented.
포로들은 여전히 철저히 격리되어 있었고, 완전히 수동적이고 순응적인 태도를 보였다.
On the fourth day after the capture of the brig, we found to our great joy that we were in the Gulf Stream.
브리그선을 장악한 지 나흘째 되는 날, 우리는 매우 기쁘게도 걸프 스트림 해류에 들어섰음을 확인했다.
We continued to steer to the northward, with every sail set and drawing, and now felt little apprehension of being overtaken by any vessel from the southward.
우리는 모든 돛을 단단히 달고 북쪽으로 계속 나아갔고, 이제는 남쪽에서 오는 어떤 배에도 쫓길 걱정이 거의 없었다.

In about four days more we found ourselves in the vicinity of the south-east coast of the United States, and in the neighborhood of Cape Hatteras.
약 나흘 뒤, 우리는 미국 남동 해안, 특히 해터러스 곶 근방에 도달하게 되었다.
We now made sail to the eastward, with the design of keeping well off shore until we could determine our exact position.
우리는 육지에서 멀리 떨어진 채 동쪽을 향해 돛을 달았고, 정확한 위치를 파악할 때까지 해안에서 벗어나기로 했다.
This we shortly afterward had the means of doing by the aid of a lunar observation, furnished by Augustus.

We found ourselves in latitude 34 degrees 30 minutes, and longitude 76 degrees 20 minutes west.
우리는 북위 34도 30분, 서경 76도 20분 지점에 있다는 것을 알게 되었다.
We now determined to put into port, if possible, at the island of St. Thomas.
우리는 이제 가능하다면 세인트 토마스 섬에 정박하기로 결정했다.
This resolution was owing to three causes — we had been unable to take on board more than a very limited supply of water — all our provisions were spoiled — and the brig required repairs.
이러한 결정을 내린 데는 세 가지 이유가 있었다 — 우리는 물을 아주 소량만 적재할 수 있었고, 모든 식량은 상했으며, 브리그선은 수리를 요하는 상태였다.
We kept our course accordingly, and on the 13th of July, being in the latitude of the Bermudas, we were overtaken by a violent gale from the south-west.
우리는 이에 따라 항로를 유지했고, 7월 13일, 버뮤다 부근 위도에 도달했을 무렵, 남서쪽에서 불어온 거센 폭풍을 맞닥뜨렸다.
The brig was nearly dismasted, and her starboard bulwarks stove in.
브리그선은 거의 돛대가 부러질 뻔했고, 우현 쪽의 난간은 부서졌다.
The sea, moreover, now running high, was shipped in prodigious quantities, and in spite of every effort we found ourselves gradually filling.
게다가 바다는 이미 높은 파도로 치솟고 있었고, 엄청난 양의 바닷물이 쏟아져 들어와, 우리가 아무리 애를 써도 점점 배가 침수되어가는 것이 느껴졌다.
We had now little hope of saving the vessel.
이제 우리는 배를 살릴 희망이 거의 없었다.
Our pumps were altogether useless, having been long out of order, and we had only two buckets with which to bail.
우리의 펌프는 오래전부터 고장이 나 있었고, 물을 퍼낼 수 있는 양동이는 두 개뿐이었다.
Yet we did all that men could do.
그럼에도 우리는 인간으로서 할 수 있는 모든 것을 다 했다.
We struggled day and night, alternately bailing and lying down to rest.
우리는 밤낮없이 버텼고, 번갈아 가며 물을 퍼내고 잠시씩 쉬었다.
By the fifth day the brig was so full that we gave up all hope, and made up our minds to perish together.
다섯째 날에는 배 안이 물로 가득 차 절망했고, 우리는 모두 함께 죽을 각오를 하게 되었다.
