Chapter IX (제9장)
> On the twentieth of December, 1827, the sun rose with unusual splendor.
1827년 12월 20일, 태양은 평소와 다르게 눈부시게 떠올랐다.
> Its rays fell vividly upon the smooth ocean, and we were enabled to observe more distinctly than hitherto the appearance of the southern horizon.
햇살은 잔잔한 바다 위에 선명히 내리쬐었고, 우리는 지금까지보다 훨씬 더 남쪽 수평선의 모습을 또렷이 관찰할 수 있었다.
> Indeed, very far off, we perceived a singular, low, white appearance, as of a long line of breakers foam.
사실, 매우 멀리서, 우리는 길게 이어진 하얀 선, 마치 포말이 부서지는 파도선 같은 이상한 광경을 보았다.
> It extended from east to west, as far as the eye could reach, and seemed continually to increase in size.

> At noon we were nearly upon it, and found it to be a vast line of drift-ice, of irregular breadth, probably averaging fifty or sixty miles.

> The line of ice was not continuous, although it looked so from a distance.
얼음층은 멀리서 보기에는 하나의 선처럼 보였지만, 실제로는 끊어져 있었다.
> It consisted of immense blocks, in absolute contact, and in many places piled one upon the other to the height of fifty or sixty feet — forming altogether a body of dreary and almost impassable barrier.

> The average height of the barrier was about twenty-five feet, but in many places it rose from seventy to even a hundred.

> It towered above the level of the ocean like a gigantic rampart, shining in the most dazzling manner under the full beams of the sun.

> But it was the indescribable whiteness, more dazzlingly white than any object I had ever seen, that inspired us most with the sense of awe.

> It was not long before we discovered a channel, apparently of great depth, running through the barrier and winding its way to the southward.

> This we resolved to explore; although, by so doing, we should be losing sight of the brig and be running the risk of having our retreat cut off by the floating of the ice.

> We put boldly into it, however, having full confidence in our boat and in the resolution of our men.
하지만 우리는 배의 견고함과 선원들의 결단력을 믿고, 용감히 그 수로로 들어갔다.
> In many places the channel was exceedingly narrow, the ice towering above us like walls on both sides.
여러 곳에서 수로는 매우 좁았고, 양옆의 얼음들은 성벽처럼 우리 위로 솟아올라 있었다.
> We sailed through it in perfect silence, for the mysteriousness of the scene tended to repress even the voice of awe.

> We emerged at length into an open sea, which seemed unbounded.

> It was late in the day when we first caught sight of land to the southward, and it was with extreme difficulty that we made an offing sufficient to enable us to keep clear of the breakers which beat violently upon the coast.
우리가 남쪽 방향으로 육지를 처음 발견한 것은 날이 저물 무렵이었고, 거세게 부딪치는 파도를 피할 수 있을 만큼 배를 멀리 떨어뜨리는 것도 극히 어려운 일이었다.

> Having passed the line of breakers, we coasted along the shore to the eastward for about ten miles, in search of a convenient landing place.

> At length we found a small bay, sheltered by a ledge of rocks projecting into the sea, and succeeded in running our boat with some difficulty into its mouth.
마침내 우리는 바다로 돌출된 암반이 바람을 막아주는 작은 만을 발견했고, 약간의 어려움 끝에 배를 그 입구로 밀어 넣는 데 성공했다.
> We here came to anchor in about four fathoms of water, and close under the lee of the rocks.
우리는 수심 약 4패덤(약 7.3미터) 지점에 닻을 내렸고, 바람을 피할 수 있는 암석 뒤편에 배를 댔다.
> The spot was admirably adapted for concealment, and we determined to remain here until the dawn of the following morning.
이곳은 숨기에 아주 적합한 장소였으며, 우리는 다음 날 새벽까지 이곳에 머무르기로 결정했다.
> Shortly after sundown we observed a number of lights along the shore, and presently a canoe, filled with natives, made its appearance, gliding very cautiously around the point of a neighboring headland.
해가 진 직후, 우리는 해안선을 따라 여러 개의 불빛을 목격했고, 곧이어 토착민들로 가득 찬 카누 한 척이 인근 곶을 조심스럽게 돌아나오며 등장하는 것을 보았다.
> After reconnoitering us steadily for some time, the savages approached our boat, but with evident signs of distrust.

> We made them presents of some glass beads and a few other trinkets, with which they appeared much gratified, and soon went back to the shore.

> Next morning, early, we were much surprised to see the same canoe approaching us as before, but with a greater number of savages on board — probably thirty.

> They brought with them various articles of food — dried fish, roots, and some very fine water — which they presented to us with every appearance of good will and friendship.
그들은 건조한 생선, 뿌리채소, 매우 맑은 물 등 여러 가지 음식을 가져왔고, 그것들을 우리에게 호의와 우정의 표시로 건넸다.
> We now resolved to pay them a visit, and for that purpose got into our boat, accompanied by the mate and two seamen well armed.
우리는 그들을 직접 방문해 보기로 결정했고, 이를 위해 무장을 갖춘 항해사와 선원 두 명과 함께 배에 올랐다.
> As we drew near the shore, the savages crowded around us in great numbers, but conducted themselves with the greatest decorum.

> They seemed highly delighted, and made us signs that we should follow them to the village, which we did without hesitation.

> The village was situated at the distance of about half a mile from the landing-place, and consisted of about fifty huts, formed of branches of trees, and plastered over with clay.

> Everything appeared to be conducted with the greatest order, and the whole bearing of the savages was kind and respectful.
모든 것은 질서정연하게 이루어졌고, 원주민들의 태도는 친절하고 예의 바른 모습이었다.
> We saw no arms among them, nor anything which could be construed into a weapon of offence.
그들 중 누구에게서도 무기나 공격적인 도구를 전혀 찾아볼 수 없었다.
> We were soon led into one of the largest huts, and refreshments of all kinds set before us.
우리는 곧 가장 큰 오두막 중 하나로 안내되었고, 다양한 음식과 환대를 받았다.
> The natives manifested the most eager curiosity in regard to everything we did or said, and scrupulously refrained from touching anything belonging to us.
원주민들은 우리가 하는 말과 행동 하나하나에 큰 호기심을 보였고, 우리의 소지품에는 결코 손을 대지 않으려 애썼다.
