Chapter X (제10장)
> During the first four or five days after our arrival at the village, the natives crowded around us every moment.
우리가 마을에 도착한 후 처음 4~5일 동안, 원주민들은 매 순간마다 우리 주변에 몰려들었다.
> They seemed to take great pleasure in examining our persons and clothes, and in turning over and scrutinizing the various articles we had about us.
그들은 우리의 신체와 옷을 관찰하고, 우리가 가지고 있는 다양한 물건들을 들춰보고 세심히 살펴보는 것에서 큰 즐거움을 느끼는 듯했다.
> Their manners were at all times gentle and respectful, and, but for the continual increase of curiosity on their part, we should have thought them the most docile and well-disposed savages we had ever seen.

> We were compelled to make a distribution of our trinkets, beads, and other toys, and in return received an abundance of provisions.

> The behavior of the natives had caused us very little suspicion, and we began to take great delight in their society.

> We had frequent opportunities of observing the extreme feebleness of constitution possessed by these savages.

> Their skill in the management of canoes, especially in a heavy sea, excited the admiration of everyone on board.

> In a week we had become so thoroughly at ease that we went unarmed wherever we pleased about the village, and took part in all the sports and occupations of the natives.

> We kept up a constant communication with the vessel, and took every precaution to guard against surprise — notwithstanding the confidence we felt in the good faith of our hosts.

> One day, about the middle of January, we were invited to visit a remarkable natural grotto in the vicinity of the village.

> The invitation was given by one of the most aged of the savages, and gladly accepted.

> The old man went before us as a guide, and we followed in single file, some twenty natives making up the party.

> We proceeded along a narrow defile, winding its way between lofty rocks, and occasionally obstructed by fallen trees and underbrush.

> After a walk of about an hour, we halted before a very narrow aperture in the face of a cliff.

> It was barely large enough for one person to enter at a time, yet all of us passed in succession without much difficulty.

> The passage within was of great length and exceedingly tortuous, so that we had to use torches in order to grope our way.
그 안의 통로는 길고 매우 구불구불해서, 우리는 횃불을 들고 더듬으며 나아가야 했다.
> After a while the path became wider and more regular, and we were enabled to proceed with greater comfort.
잠시 후 통로는 좀 더 넓고 정돈된 형태로 바뀌었고, 우리는 좀 더 수월하게 이동할 수 있었다.

> Presently we arrived at an arched opening of considerable size, which led to a natural amphitheatre, evidently the work of the rushing waters.

> It was about two hundred yards in circumference, and the walls, rising to the height of a hundred feet, were composed of a black granite, bearing the evident marks of violent agitation from below.

> The floor of this amphitheatre was thickly strewn with white bones — some of them of the whale, and others of the seal, together with many which seemed to belong to human beings.

> Some few were found deeply embedded in the solid rock, as if the intense heat to which they had been subjected had fused the limestone into which they had been entombed.

> Besides these, were numerous large idols of black stone, evidently intended as representations of the Deity.

> These idols resembled the bust of a human figure, with the head that of a beast.

> The limbs were wanting, the whole being in a sitting posture, with the back straight, and the fore paws resting on the knees.

> In the center of the amphitheatre stood a lofty stone column, nearly twenty feet in height, and apparently of great antiquity.

> It was perfectly cylindrical, and composed of a black granite similar to that of the walls.

> Around the base ran a series of grotesque figures in bas-relief, representing human limbs intermingled with the bodies of wild beasts, and the whole was enveloped in a strong sulphurous odor.

> As we gazed in speechless wonder at these monstrous remnants of a by-gone world, the old savage who had acted as our guide approached the altar with every mark of reverence, and knelt before it for some minutes.

> He then rose, and made us signs that we should follow him back through the passage.

> We accordingly returned, much impressed with what we had seen, and disposed to regard the natives with greater respect than before.
