Chapter XI (제11장)
> On the seventh day after our visit to the grotto, the captain determined to pay the chief of the village a formal visit.
우리가 그 동굴을 방문한 지 7일째 되는 날, 선장은 마을의 추장에게 공식 방문을 하기로 결정했다.
> Accompanied by the mate and myself, he set out for the purpose about noon, promising to return at sunset.
선장은 항해사와 나를 대동하고 정오쯤 출발했으며, 해질 무렵 돌아오겠다고 약속했다.
> We took with us several trifling presents, consisting of blue beads, brass rings, and pieces of red cloth.
우리는 파란 구슬, 놋쇠 반지, 붉은 천 조각 같은 자잘한 선물들을 챙겼다.
> The natives received us with apparent cordiality, and conducted us to the dwelling of the chief, a log-hut not much larger than the others, but distinguished by some slight decorations.
원주민들은 우리를 겉보기엔 진심으로 환영했고, 우리를 추장의 거처로 안내했다. 그곳은 다른 오두막보다 조금 더 장식이 있는 통나무집이었지만, 크기 면에서는 별 차이 없었다.
> Here we were presented to the old man who had accompanied us to the grotto, and who appeared to exercise authority over the tribe.
그곳에서 우리는 그 동굴로 우리를 데려갔던 노인과 다시 만나게 되었고, 그는 이 부족에 대해 실질적인 권위를 가진 인물로 보였다.
> He received us with great apparent respect, and ordered a feast to be prepared.
그는 우리를 매우 공손하게 맞이했고, 잔치를 준비하라고 명령했다.
> We were much pleased with our entertainment, and after some time expressed a wish to return to the vessel.
우리는 그 환대에 매우 만족했고, 잠시 후 배로 돌아가고 싶다는 뜻을 전했다.
> Our host seemed unwilling to part with us, but at length permitted us to depart, sending with us a numerous escort.
그러나 그 노인은 우리를 쉽게 보내려 하지 않는 듯했으며, 결국엔 많은 수의 호위를 붙여 우리를 돌려보내주었다.

> We had proceeded nearly half-way to the vessel, attended by our escort, when suddenly one of the natives darted from the path into the undergrowth and disappeared.
우리가 배로 돌아가는 길의 절반쯤 왔을 때, 호위하던 원주민 중 한 명이 갑자기 길을 벗어나 덤불 속으로 사라졌다.
> This conduct gave us some little uneasiness, but the rest of the party continued their march in silence.
이 행동은 우리에게 약간의 불안감을 안겨주었지만, 나머지 원주민들은 묵묵히 행진을 계속했다.
> We had advanced a few paces farther, when we heard a loud shout from the direction in which the savage had vanished.
우리가 몇 걸음 더 나아갔을 때, 사라진 원주민이 향했던 방향에서 큰 외침 소리가 들려왔다.
> In an instant our whole escort sprang to their feet, and rushed tumultuously toward the spot.
순간, 우리의 호위 인원 전원이 일제히 벌떡 일어나, 소리가 난 지점으로 우르르 달려갔다.
> We stood in great astonishment, but had not long to reflect before we found ourselves completely hemmed in by a body of savages, who had emerged from a ravine close by.
우리는 크게 당황한 채 서 있었지만, 곧바로 인근 협곡에서 튀어나온 다른 원주민 무리에게 완전히 포위당하고 말았다.
> Resistance was useless, and we submitted in silence.
저항은 무의미했으며, 우리는 침묵 속에서 체념했다.
> They bound us securely, and led us through the forest in a different direction from that we had originally taken.
그들은 우리를 단단히 결박하고, 우리가 왔던 길이 아닌 다른 방향으로 숲 속을 끌고 갔다.
> After a walk of about an hour, we came to a small open space, thickly surrounded with underwood, where we were thrown to the ground and left under a guard.
약 한 시간쯤 이동한 후, 우리는 덤불로 빽빽이 둘러싸인 작은 공터에 도착했고, 그곳에서 땅바닥에 내던져진 채 경비 아래 방치되었다.

> Shortly afterward we were separated, the captain and the mate being led off in one direction, and myself in another.
곧이어 우리는 서로 떨어지게 되었고, 선장과 항해사는 한쪽 방향으로, 나는 다른 방향으로 끌려갔다.
> I was conducted to a small hut, rudely constructed of boughs, and was there left alone, securely fastened, and under strict watch.
나는 조잡하게 나뭇가지로 지어진 작은 오두막으로 끌려갔고, 그곳에 단단히 묶인 채 엄격한 감시 속에서 홀로 남겨졌다.
> In this situation I remained for several hours, without seeing or hearing anything of my companions.
나는 이 상태로 몇 시간 동안 갇혀 있었고, 동료들의 모습이나 소식은 전혀 들을 수 없었다.
> At length, just before nightfall, a number of savages entered the hut, and, having unbound me, made signs that I should accompany them.
마침내, 해가 지기 직전, 여러 명의 원주민들이 오두막 안으로 들어왔고, 나를 풀어준 후, 그들과 함께 가라는 손짓을 했다.
> I obeyed, trembling with terror, and we proceeded in profound silence through a winding path, until we came to a small glade, thickly overgrown with underwood.
나는 공포에 떨며 그들의 지시에 따랐고, 우리는 말없이 구불구불한 오솔길을 따라 이동했다. 그러다 덤불이 우거진 작은 숲속 공터에 도착했다.
> Here a most appalling spectacle met my eyes.
그곳에서 나는 끔찍한 광경을 마주하게 되었다.
> The bodies of the captain and the mate were laid out side by side on the grass — horribly mutilated and stripped of flesh, with the exception of the bones.
선장과 항해사의 시신이 나란히 풀밭에 놓여 있었는데, 몸은 끔찍하게 훼손되어 있었고, 뼈만 남기고 살점은 전부 제거된 상태였다.
> They had evidently been beaten to death with clubs.
그들은 분명 몽둥이로 구타당해 죽임을 당한 것처럼 보였다.

> I was of course utterly overcome by the horror of the spectacle presented.
나는 그 참혹한 광경에 완전히 압도당해 말을 잃었다.
> My senses reeled — my knees tottered beneath me — I sank to the earth, and for some time my mind was wholly benumbed.
나는 정신이 혼미해지고, 무릎은 후들거렸으며, 결국 땅에 주저앉고 말았다. 한동안 나는 완전히 얼이 빠진 상태였다.
> After a while, I became more collected, and resolved to make a bold attempt at escape.
잠시 후, 나는 정신을 다잡았고, 과감히 탈출을 시도해보겠다고 결심했다.
> An opportunity soon presented itself.
그리고 곧 기회가 찾아왔다.
> The savages who had brought me to the glade left me alone for a moment, probably to procure some implements for the further mutilation of the bodies.
나를 그 공터로 데려온 원주민들은 잠시 그 자리를 비웠다. 아마도 시신을 더 훼손하기 위한 도구를 가지러 간 듯했다.
> I seized the chance, and fled at once into the forest, keeping the moon in view, and endeavoring to make my way toward the sea.
나는 그 기회를 놓치지 않고 즉시 숲속으로 도망쳤다. 달을 길잡이 삼아, 바다 쪽으로 향하려 애썼다.
> For more than an hour I continued to fly, guided by the distant roar of the surf.
나는 멀리서 들려오는 파도 소리를 따라, 한 시간 이상 달아났다.
> At length I reached the shore, at a point far to the eastward of the bay where the vessel lay.
마침내 나는 우리 배가 정박해 있던 만의 동쪽 먼 지점에 있는 해안가에 도착했다.
> Here, concealed among the rocks, I lay down to rest, thoroughly exhausted, and with a spirit broken by the most horrible apprehensions.
나는 그곳에서 암석들 사이에 몸을 숨긴 채, 완전히 지쳐 쓰러졌고, 마음은 말로 다할 수 없는 공포와 불안으로 무너져 있었다.
