Chapter XII (제12장)
> I must have lain for several hours in a state bordering upon insensibility, when I was aroused by a rustling near me.
나는 반쯤 의식을 잃은 상태로 몇 시간 동안 누워 있었던 것 같다, 그러다 내 근처에서 나는 바스락거리는 소리에 깨어났다.
> At first, I imagined it to be caused by some wild beast, and was about to make an effort at flight, when I heard my name pronounced in a low voice.
처음엔 그것이 야생 동물 때문일 거라고 생각했고, 도망치려 몸을 일으키려던 찰나, 나는 누군가 낮은 목소리로 내 이름을 부르는 소리를 들었다.
> I listened — and again heard the words “Arthur! — Arthur Pym!”
나는 귀를 기울였고 — 다시금 “아서! — 아서 핌!” 이라는 목소리가 들려왔다.
> Upon this I made an attempt to arise, when I felt some one grasp my hand.
이 소리에 나는 몸을 일으키려 했고, 그 순간 누군가가 내 손을 잡는 것을 느꼈다.
> The voice was now near me, and presently I recognized it as that of Dirk Peters.
그 목소리는 이제 바로 곁에서 들렸고, 나는 곧 그것이 **더크 피터스(Dirk Peters)**의 것임을 알아차렸다.
> “Thank God!” was all I could say.
“신이시여, 감사합니다!” 나는 그 말밖에 할 수 없었다.
> He pressed my hand fervently, and for some moments we remained silent, both overpowered by the fullness of our emotions.
그는 뜨겁게 내 손을 움켜쥐었고, 우리 둘 다 벅찬 감정에 휩싸여, 한동안 아무 말 없이 그저 침묵 속에 앉아 있었다.

> Peters now explained to me that he had made his escape from the savages about the same time as myself, having been left unbound in the hut, with a view of being put to death in the morning.
피터스는 그도 나와 거의 동시에 원주민들에게서 탈출했다며 설명했다. 그는 오두막 안에 결박되지 않은 채 방치되어 있었고, 다음 날 아침에 처형될 예정이었다고 했다.
> Having overheard the plans of the savages, he succeeded in forcing out some of the withes which bound the enclosure of the hut, and thus made his way into the forest.
피터스는 원주민들의 계획을 엿들었고, 오두막을 둘러싼 울타리를 묶고 있던 덩굴가지를 뜯어내며 숲으로 도망칠 수 있었다.
> For some time he was bewildered, and knew not in what direction to proceed, being fearful of encountering the savages, and still more so of falling in with myself, as he supposed me to be dead.
그는 한동안 길을 잃고 헤맸으며, 어디로 가야 할지 몰랐다. 원주민들과 마주칠까 두려웠고, 심지어 나와 마주치는 것조차 꺼려졌는데, 그는 내가 이미 죽었다고 생각하고 있었기 때문이었다.
> This will account for his conduct in shrinking from my touch in the hut.
이것이 바로 그가 앞서 오두막에서 내 손을 피하려 했던 이유였다.
> After some hesitation, he had resolved to seek the seashore, and, in making his way thither, had fallen in with me, as already described.
그는 망설이다가 결국 바닷가로 향하기로 결심했고, 그 도중 우연히 나를 발견하게 되었던 것이다. 이 부분은 앞서 설명된 내용과 일치한다.

> We now held a consultation in order to determine upon some course of action.
우리는 이제 앞으로의 행동 방향을 정하기 위해 상의를 시작했다.
> We had no arms, and the savages were still in search of us, so that we could not hope to regain possession of the vessel.
우리는 무기도 없고, 원주민들은 여전히 우리를 수색 중이었기 때문에, 배를 다시 차지하는 것은 불가능해 보였다.
> Our present design was to make our way along the sea-coast, in the hope of falling in with some of the crew who might have escaped.
현재로선, 해안을 따라 이동하며, 혹시라도 탈출한 선원들과 마주치기를 바라는 것이 유일한 희망이었다.
> We accordingly pushed on in the direction of the ship, keeping a careful watch to avoid detection.
우리는 그리하여 조심스럽게 배가 있던 방향으로 나아갔으며, 발각되지 않도록 경계를 늦추지 않았다.
> After a walk of some hours, we arrived at the bay, to the eastward of which, and in the vicinity of the village, the vessel had been lying.
몇 시간쯤 걸은 후, 우리는 그 만에 도착했고, 그 만의 동쪽, 즉 마을 인근에 우리 배가 정박해 있던 지점 근처에 다다랐다.
> Great caution was necessary in approaching it, as we were now within a short distance of the houses.
우리는 이제 원주민들의 집들과 아주 가까운 거리까지 접근했기 때문에, 매우 신중하게 행동해야 했다.

> We made our way cautiously through a tract of thick undergrowth, until we came within a few paces of the edge of the bay, and had a full view of the vessel.
우리는 울창한 덤불 지대를 조심스럽게 통과하며, 만의 끝자락 몇 걸음 거리까지 접근했고, 마침내 배 전체가 시야에 들어왔다.
> It was lying with her side to the shore, and nearly alongside a natural quay of rock.
배는 육지를 향해 옆면을 대고 있었고, 거의 자연적으로 형성된 암석 부두에 바짝 붙어 있었다.
> A great crowd of the natives were assembled around it, seemingly in consultation.
많은 수의 원주민들이 배 주위에 모여 있었으며, 그들은 무언가 상의를 하는 듯한 모습이었다.
> Presently they all left the vessel in a body, and proceeded toward the village.
잠시 후, 그들은 무리를 지어 모두 배에서 내려, 마을 쪽으로 향했다.
> We waited patiently until they were out of sight, and then made a rapid approach.
우리는 그들이 완전히 시야에서 사라질 때까지 참고 기다렸다가, 곧바로 재빨리 접근했다.
> The decks were empty, and we could perceive no signs of life on board.
갑판은 텅 비어 있었고, 배 안에는 생명의 기척이 전혀 느껴지지 않았다.
> After a short consultation, we determined to go on board.
잠시 상의한 끝에, 우리는 배에 오르기로 결심했다.

> We clambered up the side without being perceived, and passed cautiously along the deck.
우리는 들키지 않도록 조심스럽게 배 옆면을 기어올라, 갑판 위를 살금살금 지나갔다.
> Everything was in the same condition as we had left it.
모든 것은 우리가 떠났을 당시 그대로의 상태였다.
> We now resolved to take possession of the schooner at all hazards, and to hoist sail if possible, trusting to our own strength and the favor of the wind.
우리는 이제 무슨 일이 있더라도 이 배를 차지하기로 결심했고, 가능하면 돛을 올려 바람과 우리의 힘에 모든 것을 걸기로 했다.
> Peters now left me to keep watch on deck, while he went below to search.
피터스는 나를 갑판에 남겨 경계를 서게 하고, 선실 아래로 내려가 안을 살펴보기로 했다.
> He had scarcely disappeared, when I heard him utter an exclamation of surprise and horror.
그가 거의 사라지자마자, 나는 그가 놀람과 공포가 섞인 외마디 비명을 지르는 소리를 들었다.
> In the next moment, he staggered up the companion-way, pale as death, and scarcely able to articulate a single syllable.
곧이어 그는 시체처럼 창백한 얼굴로 휘청거리며 사다리를 올라왔고, 한 마디 말조차 제대로 할 수 없는 상태였다.
> I flew to him in alarm, and he pointed tremblingly to the cabin, bidding me to look for myself.
나는 놀라서 곧장 그에게 달려갔고, 그는 떨리는 손가락으로 선실을 가리키며, 직접 보라고 했다.
> I descended without hesitation, and the cause of his agitation was but too evident.
나는 망설이지 않고 아래로 내려갔으며, 그가 왜 그렇게 당황했는지를 곧바로 알 수 있었다.

> Stretched at full length upon one of the lockers in the cabin lay the body of a white man, clothed in a sailor’s dress.
선실 안의 보관용 벤치 위에 길게 누워 있는 백인 남자의 시신이 있었다. 그는 선원 복장을 하고 있었다.
> He was quite dead, and had evidently been dead for several days.
그는 완전히 죽어 있었으며, 누가 봐도 며칠 전부터 사망한 상태였다.
> I never beheld a more ghastly spectacle.
나는 이보다 더 섬뜩한 광경은 본 적이 없었다.
> He had been partially eaten, the arms, legs, and portions of the trunk being torn off.
그의 팔과 다리, 그리고 몸통 일부가 뜯겨나가 있었고, 부분적으로 먹힌 흔적이 있었다.
> The whole surface of the body presented the appearance of having been gnawed by rats.
시신의 전체 표면은 마치 쥐 떼가 갉아먹은 듯한 형상이었다.
> Some fragments of the flesh lay scattered about the floor.
살점의 일부 조각들은 바닥 여기저기에 흩어져 있었다.
> The horrid condition of the place, swarming with blue-bottles and maggots, and the putrescent smell arising from the body, can be conceived but by those who have themselves been witnesses of such sights.
그 장소는 푸른 파리 떼와 구더기들이 들끓고 있었고, 시신에서 썩은 악취가 진동했다. 이런 광경은 직접 본 사람만이 상상할 수 있는 지옥 같은 모습이었다.
