Chapter XIII (제13장)
> The circumstances which had thus aroused us to new exertion were now too palpably frightful to admit of hesitation.
우리를 다시 행동하게 만든 상황은 너무도 분명하고 섬뜩해서, 망설일 여지조차 없었다.
> The body, as I before said, was partly eaten, and in that condition it would have been madness to remain on board another hour.
앞서 말했듯, 시신은 부분적으로 먹힌 상태였고, 그런 환경에서 한 시간이라도 더 이 배에 머문다는 건 광기와도 같았다.
> Yet we could not venture to attempt a retreat to the shore, while the savages were still in the vicinity.
그러나 원주민들이 여전히 인근에 있는 상황에서, 우리가 해안으로 되돌아가는 건 너무 위험했다.
> The extremity of horror in which we were involved had the effect of rendering us desperate, and we resolved to make some exertion for our common safety.
우리가 처한 극한의 공포는 우리를 오히려 필사적으로 만들었고, 우리는 공동의 생존을 위한 행동을 취하기로 결심했다.
> Peters went again below, and succeeded in throwing overboard the mutilated corpse.

> We then cleansed the cabin as well as we could, and having found some spirits, took each a dram, which served to revive us.

> Our next thought was to make some provision for our sustenance during the probable passage of the schooner.

> We also found in one of the lockers a small box containing candles, a few compasses, some sail needles and twine, and other similar articles.

> These gave us great relief and encouragement, enabling us to hope for ultimate preservation.

> We now carefully examined the condition of the brig, and found her not much injured by the savages.

> They had carried away some of the rigging, it is true, and broken the rudder partially, but these were trifles, and we had both the ingenuity and means of repairing them.

> This manœuvre was accomplished with much labor and difficulty, but we finally succeeded, and immediately got her under a small sail.

> We kept close along shore, until we had the whole village between us and the bay, and then stood boldly out to sea.

> We had not, however, proceeded more than two leagues, when we found that we were still pursued by a large canoe full of natives.

> We now put forth all our strength, and did our best to crowd sail upon the schooner.

> The wind fortunately freshened as the sun rose, and we soon began to gain upon our pursuers.
다행히도 해가 뜨자 바람이 점점 강해졌고, 우리는 추격자들과의 거리를 벌리기 시작했다.
> By noon, they were many miles astern, and by sunset we lost sight of them entirely.
정오쯤, 그들은 우리 뒤로 수 마일 떨어졌고, 해질 무렵엔 완전히 시야에서 사라졌다.
> We now ventured to take some repose, after a long season of continual watching and dread.
우리는 이제야 비로소, 오랜 시간 이어진 경계와 공포 속에서, 조금의 휴식을 취할 여유를 가질 수 있었다.
> We slept as soundly as the intense anxiety we had so long endured would permit.
우리는 그동안의 긴장과 불안이 허락하는 한에서, 깊이 잠들었다.
> On the next morning we found ourselves out of sight of the land.
다음 날 아침, 우리는 육지가 더 이상 보이지 않는 곳까지 나와 있었다.
> No canoe was in pursuit, and we had every reason to believe that we were at length beyond the reach of the savages.
추격하는 카누도 없었고, 우리는 마침내 원주민들의 손이 미치지 않는 곳까지 벗어났다고 확신할 수 있었다.
