Chapter XIV (제14장)
> We kept a lookout ahead, but saw no sign of any vessel during the whole day.
우리는 전방을 계속 주시했지만, 하루 종일 어떠한 배의 흔적도 볼 수 없었다.
> The sea was calm, and we made good progress, but suffered dreadfully from thirst, the water in the cask having become foul with the heat of the sun.
바다는 잔잔했고 항해는 순조로웠지만, 우리는 극심한 갈증에 시달렸다. 물통 속의 물은 태양열에 상해 버렸기 때문이었다.
> We now threw overboard all the cargo, with the hope of lightening the schooner so as to make more sail.
우리는 이제 돛을 더 효율적으로 펼치기 위해, 배를 가볍게 하려고 화물을 모두 바다에 내던졌다.
> In this we were partially successful, and, the wind holding steadily from the north-west, we succeeded in bringing the schooner quite round and stood due south.
우리는 이 조치로 일부 성과를 얻었고, 바람이 지속적으로 북서쪽에서 불어왔기에, 우리는 배를 완전히 방향 전환시켜 남쪽으로 항해할 수 있었다.
> Our design was to get into the track of the southern whaling ships — a matter somewhat difficult, as the season for their return was nearly over.
우리의 계획은 남쪽 고래잡이 배들의 항로로 진입하는 것이었으나, 그들의 귀환 시즌이 거의 끝나가고 있었기 때문에 쉬운 일은 아니었다.

> The heat of the sun began now to affect us more powerfully, and by the end of the second day we were scarcely able to move.
태양의 열기는 점점 더 우리를 괴롭혔고, 이틀째가 끝날 무렵엔 거의 움직일 수조차 없을 정도였다.
> Our suffering from thirst was now excessive, and we had not a drop of fresh water left.
갈증으로 인한 고통은 극에 달했고, 우리는 이제 한 방울의 마실 물도 남아 있지 않았다.
> We passed the night in a state bordering upon frenzy, and when the third morning dawned, Peters was completely delirious.
우리는 광기에 가까운 상태로 밤을 보냈으며, 셋째 날 아침이 밝았을 때 피터스는 완전히 섬망 상태에 빠져 있었다.
> He spoke incoherently, and would listen to nothing.
그는 횡설수설하며, 아무 말도 들으려 하지 않았다.
> About noon I succeeded in finding a small sea-crab, which I devoured ravenously.
정오 무렵, 나는 작은 바닷게 하나를 발견했고, 그것을 게걸스럽게 먹어치웠다.
> Its shell was very hard, and I had nothing with which to break it, but by dashing it repeatedly against the deck I finally succeeded in opening it.
껍질이 매우 단단했지만, 나는 깨뜨릴 도구가 없어서, 갑판에 여러 번 내리쳐 결국 열 수 있었다.
> The juice afforded some little moisture, but I was still left in a state of the most horrible suffering.

> Shortly afterward I became conscious of a dull, sullen sound, like that produced by the rolling of a large barrel on the floor of a vast empty room.
잠시 후, 나는 무언가 묵직하고 둔탁한 소리를 의식하기 시작했다. 마치 텅 빈 거대한 방 안에서 큰 통이 구르는 듯한 소리였다.
> I was lying upon the deck near the companion-way, and the sound seemed to come from beneath it.
나는 선실 입구 근처 갑판에 누워 있었고, 그 소리는 그 아래에서 들려오는 듯했다.
> As I listened attentively, I fancied that I could distinguish syllables, and presently I seemed to recognize some familiar words, among others my own name, and the words “Get up! — Get up!”
주의 깊게 귀를 기울이자, 나는 그 소리 속에서 음절이 들리는 듯했고, 곧 익숙한 말들 — 내 이름과 함께 “일어나! 일어나!”라는 외침을 알아들은 것 같았다.
> I now aroused myself and made an effort to reach the companion-way.
나는 정신을 가다듬고 선실 입구까지 기어가려 애썼다.
> As I approached it, the sound became more distinct, and at length I was convinced that some person was hailing me from the hold of the brig.
입구 가까이 다가갈수록 그 소리는 더 뚜렷해졌고, 나는 마침내 누군가가 배 밑창에서 나를 부르고 있다는 확신이 들었다.
> I called aloud in reply, and presently heard a feeble voice answering me from below.
나는 큰 소리로 응답했고, 곧이어 아래에서 연약한 목소리가 답하는 것을 들었다.
> With some difficulty I descended into the cabin, and thence, by the ladder, into the hold.
나는 간신히 선실 안으로 들어가, 사다리를 타고 배 밑창까지 내려갔다.

> There I discovered Augustus, lying on his back, and in an utterly helpless condition.
그곳에서 나는 어거스터스가 등을 대고 누운 채, 완전히 무기력한 상태로 쓰러져 있는 것을 발견했다.
> At first I thought him dead; but upon placing my hand on his breast I found that his heart still beat, though feebly.
처음에는 그가 이미 죽은 줄 알았지만, 그의 가슴에 손을 얹자 심장이 아직 약하게 뛰고 있다는 것을 느꼈다.
> He had been speechless for several hours, and lay apparently in a state of stupor.
그는 몇 시간째 말을 하지 못하고 있었으며, 겉보기에 혼수 상태에 가까운 기절 상태였다.
> Having found some water in the hold (a bottle being still half full), I moistened his lips and throat slightly, and he revived.
나는 배 밑창에서 반쯤 남은 병에 든 물을 발견했고, 그의 입술과 목을 살짝 적셔주자, 그는 의식을 조금씩 회복했다.
> I then made him swallow a little, which greatly refreshed him, and he was now able to open his eyes.
그에게 물을 조금 삼키게 하자, 그는 한결 나아졌고, 이제는 눈도 뜰 수 있게 되었다.
> He recognized me at once, and seemed overcome with joy.
그는 나를 즉시 알아보았고, 기쁨에 복받쳐 말을 잇지 못했다.
> He told me that he had come to himself while in the hold, and, unable to find me, had lain down again to die.
그는 배 밑창에서 정신을 차렸지만, 나를 찾지 못해 그저 누워서 죽음을 기다리고 있었다고 말했다.

> He had been near dying from thirst, having had no water since the mutiny.
그는 반란이 일어난 이후 단 한 방울의 물도 마시지 못한 채, 거의 탈수로 죽을 뻔했다.
> His lips were parched, and his tongue swollen to a terrible size.
그의 입술은 바싹 말라 있었고, 혀는 끔찍할 정도로 부풀어 올라 있었다.
> He told me, too, that after the mutiny he had been knocked down and stunned, and had afterwards recovered in the hold.
그는 또한, 반란이 일어난 후 자신이 맞아 기절했다가, 나중에 배 밑창에서 정신을 차렸다고 말했다.
> Finding himself alone, and in darkness, he had groped about until he found the ladder, and had then called out loudly for assistance.
혼자 어둠 속에 있는 것을 깨닫고, 그는 사다리를 더듬어 찾아낸 후, 크게 소리쳐 도움을 요청했다.
> Having obtained no reply, he had again lain down to die.
그러나 아무런 응답도 없자, 그는 다시 누워서 죽기를 기다릴 수밖에 없었다.

> I managed to get him on deck, and laid him in the open air.
나는 그를 간신히 갑판 위로 끌어올려, 바람이 잘 드는 곳에 눕혔다.
> I then searched about for Peter, and found him lying senseless near the binnacle.
이후 나는 피터스를 찾아 나섰고, 그는 조타 장치 근처에 정신을 잃은 채 쓰러져 있는 것을 발견했다.
> By using some more of the water I had found, and rubbing his temples and hands, I finally succeeded in bringing him to his senses.
나는 조금 더 남아 있던 물을 사용해, 그의 관자놀이와 손을 문지르며 응급처치를 했고, 마침내 그의 의식을 되찾게 했다.
> He seemed to be suffering much, and made me understand that he had not slept for nearly a week.
그는 많은 고통을 겪고 있었으며, 거의 일주일 동안 잠을 자지 못했다는 사실을 내게 겨우 알렸다.
> Augustus now appeared much better, and spoke very coherently.
이제 어거스터스는 훨씬 회복되어, 제대로 된 말도 할 수 있게 되었다.
> We then conversed upon our situation, and resolved to make another and thorough search of the brig.
우리는 우리의 상황에 대해 상의했고, 배 전체를 다시 철저히 수색해보기로 결정했다.
