Chapter XV (제15장)
> We made a thorough examination of the hold, but found no more water than the bottle half full which I had already given Augustus.
우리는 배 밑창을 철저히 수색했지만, 이미 어거스터스에게 준 반쯤 찬 병 이외에는 더 이상의 식수가 없었다.
> This we were now obliged to husband as carefully as possible.
이제 우리는 그 물을 극도로 아껴 써야 할 처지에 놓였다.
> Our search for provisions was equally unsuccessful.
식량을 찾으려는 시도 역시 실패로 돌아갔다.
> We found nothing beyond a small piece of raw pork, and some few moldy sea-biscuits.
우리가 찾아낸 건 작은 생 돼지고기 한 조각과 곰팡이가 핀 선상 비스킷 몇 개뿐이었다.
> With these, and the crab which I had taken and which was still alive, we had to content ourselves.
우리는 결국 그 돼지고기, 비스킷, 그리고 아직 살아 있는 게 한 마리로 연명해야 했다.
> We now saw clearly that we must either make the land, or fall in with a vessel, or perish miserably.
이제 우리는 육지에 닿든가, 다른 배를 만나든가, 아니면 비참하게 죽을 수밖에 없다는 현실을 명확히 깨달았다.
> The necessity of relieving ourselves from the schooner as speedily as possible was therefore self-evident.
따라서 우리는 이 배에서 가능한 한 빨리 벗어나야 한다는 절박한 필요성을 절실히 느꼈다.

> We now found ourselves without provision of any kind, except the sea-biscuits, and these were so hard that we could not eat them.
이제 우리는 선상 비스킷을 제외하고는 어떤 식량도 남아 있지 않았고, 그 비스킷조차도 너무 딱딱해서 먹을 수 없었다.
> They had been originally intended for dogs, and had been thoroughly soaked in salt water.
그것들은 본래 개들을 위한 사료였으며, 소금물에 완전히 젖어 있었다.
> We softened them with water, however, and contrived to swallow a little.
우리는 그것들을 물에 불려 겨우 조금 삼켜낼 수 있었다.
> Peters and I now took turns in fishing with a small piece of rusty nail tied to a line.
피터스와 나는 이제 녹슨 못 조각 하나를 실에 묶어, 교대로 낚시를 시도했다.
> We caught nothing, with the exception of a shark, which bit at the hook but broke away with it.
하지만 상어 한 마리를 제외하고는 아무것도 잡히지 않았다. 상어는 미끼를 물었지만, 바늘과 함께 도망쳐 버렸다.
> We were now reduced to the most dreadful condition imaginable.
우리는 이제 상상할 수 있는 가장 끔찍한 상태로 내몰렸다.
> Peters and Augustus were unable to stand, and neither could speak above a whisper.
피터스와 어거스터스는 일어설 힘조차 없었으며, 겨우 속삭이듯 말할 수 있을 뿐이었다.
> I found my own condition little better.
나 역시도 별반 다르지 않았다.

> At this period it appeared to me that Augustus was dying, and I had no longer the slightest hope that he could be saved.
이 시점에서 어거스터스는 죽어가고 있는 것처럼 보였으며, 나는 그가 살아날 수 있다는 희망을 전혀 가질 수 없었다.
> He lay upon the deck with his eyes closed, and without apparent consciousness, although he still breathed.
그는 눈을 감고 갑판에 누워 있었고, 의식은 없어 보였지만, 아직 호흡은 하고 있었다.
> Peters now gave me to understand that he thought him dying, and that he could not hold out much longer himself.
피터스는 이제 나에게 어거스터스는 곧 죽을 것 같고, 자신 또한 오래 버틸 수 없다고 말하려 했다.
> We then spoke of the possibility of being yet saved, and how dreadful it was to think of perishing so miserably, after having come so far and endured so much.
우리는 혹시라도 구조될 가능성에 대해 이야기했고, 이토록 먼 여정을 버티고도 결국 이렇게 비참하게 죽는다는 생각이 얼마나 끔찍한지 말하며 괴로워했다.
> We discussed the point of our being able to hold out for a few days longer, and the chance of being picked up by some vessel.
우리는 며칠만이라도 더 버틸 수 있을지, 혹은 어떤 배에 구조될 가능성이 남아 있는지 이야기를 나눴다.
> At length I asked him if he thought it would be right to use any means whatever to preserve life, so desperate was our condition.
마침내 나는 피터스에게 물었다.
우리의 처지가 이토록 절망적인데, 삶을 유지하기 위해 어떠한 수단이든 쓰는 것이 옳다고 생각하느냐고.
> He replied that he did.
그는 그렇다고 대답했다.
> We then agreed to draw lots, and abide by the result.
우리는 제비를 뽑아, 그 결과에 따르기로 합의했다.

> The only means we had of marking the lots was by writing upon two slips of paper the words “Death” and “Life.”
우리는 제비에 표시를 할 유일한 방법으로, 두 종이 조각에 ‘죽음(Death)’과 ‘삶(Life)’이라는 단어를 각각 적었다.
> These we placed in a small bag, and after prayer and preparation, each man drew.
이 종이 조각들을 작은 자루에 넣은 뒤, 우리는 짧은 기도를 하고 마음을 가다듬은 후, 각자 하나씩 제비를 뽑았다.
> The result showed that the lot of death had fallen upon the boy Richard Parker.
그 결과, ‘죽음’이라는 제비는 소년 리처드 파커에게 돌아갔다.
> He had been lying down all this while, apparently asleep; he now arose and said he was quite ready — he had expected it.
그는 그동안 계속 누워 있었고, 겉보기에 잠든 듯했으나, 이제 일어나 차분히 말하며 준비가 되어 있다고, 그리고 그럴 줄 알았다고 했다.
> He was killed with a penknife by Peters.
그는 피터스에 의해 작은 칼(펜나이프)로 살해되었다.
> Rather more than half of his body was then consumed by the three survivors.
이후 그의 몸의 절반 이상이 세 생존자에 의해 먹혔다.
