Chapter XVI (제16장)
> The horror of our situation appeared to reach its height with the death of Parker.
파커의 죽음으로, 우리의 처한 상황은 극단적인 공포의 정점에 도달한 듯했다.
> I must not dwell upon the fearful repast which immediately followed.
나는 그 직후 벌어진 끔찍한 식사에 대해 자세히 묘사하지 않겠다.
> Enough that it lasted for several days, during which we were alleviated from the most dreadful extremities of famine.
그 식사는 며칠 동안 이어졌고, 그 기간 동안 우리는 굶주림의 극한 상태에서 벗어날 수 있었다는 것만 말해두자.
> After this repast, we found ourselves somewhat restored in strength, but, nevertheless, in a condition of the most intense moral misery.

> The recollection of what we had been forced to do brooded continually over my mind, and made me wretched.

> At this period Augustus again gave symptoms of decay, and at length sank into a state of torpor from which he never recovered.

> His death occurred on the night of the twentieth of August, precisely seven days after that of Parker.

> Peters spoke but little, and I did not question him in regard to the melancholy circumstances attending the end of our unfortunate companion.

> Our situation had now become so desperate that I frequently prayed for death, and began to hope that it would soon arrive.

> This, however, was barely sufficient to sustain life.

> On the morning of the twenty-fourth there came a shout from Peters, who had gone upon the deck a few minutes before me.
24일 아침, 나보다 몇 분 먼저 갑판 위로 올라간 피터스가 외마디 외침을 질렀다.
> He came staggering into the cabin and said that a sail was in sight.
그는 비틀거리며 선실 안으로 들어와, 돛단배가 보인다고 말했다.

> As soon as I heard the words “a sail,” I sprang to my feet and rushed on deck.
나는 “돛단배다”라는 말이 들리자마자 벌떡 일어나, 갑판 위로 달려갔다.
> The morning was bright and clear, and, at a distance of about five miles, we saw a large ship bearing down upon us with every sail set.
그 아침은 맑고 화창했으며, 약 5마일 거리에서, 모든 돛을 펼친 채 우리 쪽으로 다가오는 큰 배가 보였다.
> We immediately set up a signal of distress, by hoisting a shirt upon a piece of the broken mast.
우리는 즉시 부러진 돛대에 셔츠를 걸어 조난 신호를 만들어 올렸다.
> In about an hour afterward she hove to, and sent a boat to our relief.
약 한 시간 뒤, 그 배는 돛을 접고 정박해, 구조 보트를 우리에게 보냈다.
> By this time we were scarcely able to move, and had to be carried on board the stranger.
그때쯤 우리는 거의 움직일 수 없는 상태였기에, 구조선으로 들려 올려져야만 했다.
> She proved to be the English schooner Jane Guy, bound on a sealing and trading voyage to the South Seas.
그 배는 ‘제인 가이(Jane Guy)’라는 이름의 영국 소형 범선으로, 남태평양으로 물개잡이와 무역을 떠나는 항해 중이었다.
