Chapter VIII (제8장)
> The Jane Guy was a fine whaling-ship of the class called South Sea sloops.
‘제인 가이’호는 남태평양에서 주로 쓰이는 슬루프형 포경선으로 아주 훌륭한 배였다.
> She was of the burden of about three hundred tons, and was fully equipped for a long voyage.
그 배의 적재량은 약 300톤 정도였으며, 장기간 항해를 위한 모든 장비를 완비하고 있었다.
> The crew consisted of thirty men, besides the captain and mates.
선장은 물론, 항해사들과 함께 총 30명의 선원이 탑승해 있었다.
> She had sailed from Liverpool about three weeks before falling in with us.
이 배는 우리가 구조되기 약 3주 전, 리버풀을 출항했었다.
> Her cargo consisted chiefly of articles of trade with the islands of the South Pacific, and she had on board also ample provisions and water for a two years’ cruise.
그녀는 남태평양 여러 섬들과의 무역을 위한 상품들을 주로 실었으며, 2년 동안 항해할 수 있을 만큼 충분한 식량과 물도 탑재하고 있었다.
> The kindness of Captain Guy, the commander of the vessel, was beyond all bounds.
이 배의 선장인 가이 선장은 한없이 친절한 사람이었다.
> In every respect he seemed to be a good man, and behaved towards us with the most marked attention.

> We found plenty of seals here, and commenced our cruise among the group.

> The Jane Guy remained here about three weeks, during which we experienced much bad weather.

> Some of the birds were altogether new to us.

> One of them was a species of penguin, which appeared to be the connecting link between the penguin and the pelican.

> It had a long curved beak, immense wings, which it fluttered vigorously, and very short legs.

> After staying at Kerguelen’s Land about three weeks, we left it, going still farther to the southward.

> We kept a good look-out for ice, and met with none whatever, although the temperature was now very low.

> The sea was still entirely open, and we began to entertain hopes of discovering land farther to the south than any yet visited by man.

> It is impossible to conceive the intense excitement which possessed us as we rushed into this new and immense region, which no human being had ever trodden before.

> These intervals always occurred when no clouds were visible in the firmament, and when the air was peculiarly dry and hot.

> We found ourselves, in fact, drifting southward at the rate of at least twenty or twenty-five miles every twenty-four hours, without any perceptible wind.

> Our sails were of no use to us at all.

> The temperature of the water was now about 56°.

> The air was remarkably mild and pleasant, and we experienced no ice at all.
공기는 이상하리만큼 온화하고 쾌적했으며, 우리는 얼음조차 전혀 만나지 않았다.
