Chapter XIX (제19장)
>We passed through the gorge safely, and without accident of any kind, and proceeded for two days along the windings of the stream.
우리는 아무런 사고 없이 그 협곡을 무사히 통과했고, 이틀 동안 그 시냇물의 굽이치는 경로를 따라 나아갔다.
>At the end of this period we arrived at a point where the bed of the torrent became broad and shallow, and its course took a direction nearly north and south.
이틀이 지난 뒤, 우리는 급류의 바닥이 넓고 얕아지는 지점에 도달했으며, 그 흐름은 남북 방향으로 거의 일직선이 되었다.
>To the westward, the country was broken and mountainous, and presented more the appearance of sterility than any portion of the land we had yet seen.
서쪽으로 펼쳐진 지역은 깨지고 갈라진 듯한 산악 지형이었고, 우리가 지금까지 본 어떤 땅보다도 훨씬 척박해 보였다.
> Here the stream made a sweeping turn to the east, and washed the base of a precipice of black granite, a mile or more in perpendicular height.
이곳에서 시냇물은 동쪽으로 크게 방향을 틀며, 검은 화강암 절벽의 기슭을 따라 흘렀다. 그 절벽은 수직으로 거의 1마일(약 1.6km) 이상 솟아 있었다.
> Throughout the whole of the second day, we had to make our way cautiously along the edge of this cliff, the channel being exceedingly narrow, and in many places obstructed by sharp and dangerous rocks.
둘째 날 내내 우리는 이 절벽의 가장자리로 조심스럽게 나아가야 했으며, 수로는 몹시 좁고, 곳곳에 날카롭고 위험한 바위들이 길을 가로막고 있었다.
> Towards night we reached a natural basin, from which a narrow gorge ran into the mountains to the westward.
해가 질 무렵, 우리는 하나의 자연적인 분지에 도달했다. 그곳에서는 좁은 협곡이 서쪽 산맥으로 이어지고 있었다.
> Here we concluded to encamp for the night, having discovered a plentiful supply of fresh water.
우리는 그곳에서 풍부한 담수를 발견하고는 그날 밤을 야영하기로 결정했다.
>The night passed away in tranquillity, and, early in the morning, we resumed our journey, which now lay along the bottom of the ravine, it being impossible to proceed farther along the edge of the precipice.
밤은 고요히 지나갔고, 이른 아침, 우리는 여정을 다시 시작했다. 더 이상 절벽 가장자리로는 나아갈 수 없었기에, 이제 우리는 계곡 바닥을 따라 가야 했다.
> In about two hours we arrived at a little moss-covered cottage, of the rudest construction, situated in the middle of a garden of flowers of the most brilliant hues.

>The owner of the house, a fine-looking old man, met us at the door, and showed us a warm and even respectful reception.

그는 스페인식 차림새를 하고 있었고, 커다란 검은 콧수염을 기르고 있었으며, 스페인어를 유창하게, 게다가 본토 사람들도 놀랄 만큼 정확한 억양으로 구사했다.
>In fact, he had all the appearance of a Castilian, and his whole household, which consisted of a wife and four daughters, were in every respect Castilian also.
실제로 그는 **카스티야인(스페인 본토 사람)**처럼 보였고, 그의 가족들 — 아내와 네 명의 딸들 — 도 모든 면에서 카스티야인처럼 보였다.
> They were dressed, however, in a more elegant and costly manner than even the wealthiest of that country could afford.
그럼에도 그들은 스페인의 어떤 부유한 이들도 감당하기 어려울 정도로 더 우아하고 값비싼 옷차림을 하고 있었다.
> There were no men in the family, except the old Castilian himself.
그 가족에는 그 노인을 제외하면 남성이 없었다.
> These people seemed to be entirely ignorant of the numerous reports we had heard at the village concerning the ships.
이 사람들은 우리가 마을에서 들었던 수많은 선박 관련 소문들에 대해 전혀 모르는 듯 보였다.

> Upon our mentioning the subject, they expressed the utmost astonishment, and declared that we must have been misinformed, as it was impossible that any vessels should enter the bay without their knowledge.

>We were here compelled to remain for two days, on account of a violent storm.

> The wind continued to blow with unabated fury, and the rain descended in torrents.

> Our hosts treated us with every attention and kindness, and seemed solicitous to make us comfortable.
우리의 호스트들은 극진히 대해주었으며, 우리를 편안하게 해주려 애쓰는 듯 보였다.
> They even entered, with spirit, into our plans for prosecuting the journey, and appeared anxious to furnish us with every facility for that purpose.
그들은 기꺼이 우리의 여정 계획에 동참했고, 우리에게 필요한 모든 도움을 제공하고자 열의를 보였다.
> When the storm abated, we found ourselves unable to proceed farther in our boat, it being altogether useless, and in a falling condition.
폭풍이 잠잠해졌을 때, 우리는 더 이상 배로 나아갈 수 없음을 알게 되었다. 배는 완전히 쓸모없게 되어 망가지려는 상태였기 때문이다.
> Our friends, however, provided us with a large canoe, and an abundance of provisions.

> We set out with good hearts, and the best wishes of the whole family.
우리는 기운차게, 그리고 가족 모두의 따뜻한 응원 속에 출발했다.
> The stream, after leaving the cottage, wound its way along a precipitous ledge of rocks, and was at times so narrow as to be unnavigable.
오두막을 떠난 후, 시냇물은 가파른 바위 절벽 가장자리를 따라 굽이쳤고, 때로는 너무 좁아 항해가 불가능할 정도였다.
> After a day’s journey, however, we arrived at a point where the gorge opened into a spacious and comparatively level region, thickly wooded.
그러나 하루 여정을 거친 끝에, 우리는 좁은 협곡이 넓고 비교적 평탄하며 나무가 우거진 지역으로 열리는 지점에 도달했다.
> Through this we paddled with great difficulty for two days more, when we found a broad river, nearly half a mile wide, flowing rapidly to the southward.
이곳을 우리는 이틀간 큰 어려움 속에 노를 저어 지나갔고, 마침내 우리는 폭이 거의 반 마일(약 800미터)에 이르는, 남쪽으로 빠르게 흐르는 넓은 강을 발견했다.
> To this we now committed ourselves in full confidence of soon arriving at the region spoken of by Too-wit.
우리는 이제 이 강을 따라가며, 투윗(Too-wit)이 말했던 지역에 곧 도달할 것이라는 확신을 갖고 있었다.
