Chapter XX (제20장)
The windings of the river carried us to the southeast, and, after paddling for nearly a week, we came to a point where the shore on the right was low and nearly level with the water.
강의 굽이굽이는 우리를 남동쪽으로 이끌었고, 거의 일주일을 노를 저은 후, 우리는 오른편 강기슭이 낮고 물과 거의 수평을 이루는 지점에 도달했다.
Here we landed, and found the country sparsely inhabited, and the people somewhat more civilized than any we had yet seen.

They were an olive-colored race, and clad with great neatness.

They wore a covering on the feet, made of a species of matting.

The huts were constructed altogether of the lightest materials — barely sufficient to withstand the weather.

We saw no implements of war, nor arms of any kind.

Among these people we remained for two days.

On the third we resumed our voyage, greatly refreshed in spirits and in strength.

We now steered more to the southward than we had done previously, and found the river rapidly widening and deepening.

The banks were flat, and covered with a dense growth of gigantic trees, some of which rose to the amazing height of two hundred and even three hundred feet.

The more we penetrated to the southward the more verdant and luxurious was the appearance of the country.

It was hard to conceive the possibility of a region so totally secluded from the world, and yet so beautiful and so richly abounding in the bounties of nature.

On the fifteenth day after quitting the village of the friendly Castilians, we came to a spot where a ridge of high land made a sudden turn in the river, which flowed directly through it in a narrow and precipitous channel.

We were nearly exhausted by toil and privation, and could not look forward to our journey without a shudder.

It was, however, impossible to retreat.
