Chapter XXI (제21장)
We pushed on in our canoe for two days longer, during which we passed through a vast number of small, flat islands, covered with the most luxuriant vegetation, and interspersed with innumerable flocks of strange birds.
우리는 이틀 더 카누를 저어 나아갔고, 그동안 우리는 무수히 많은 작고 평평한 섬들을 지나쳤다. 이 섬들은 풍요로운 식생으로 덮여 있었고, 수많은 낯선 새 떼들이 여기저기 흩어져 있었다.
On the evening of the second day we reached a portion of the river from which we beheld, at the distance of about a quarter of a mile, a lofty range of mountains, extending, as far as the eye could reach, from north to south.

Our course now lay close along the base of these mountains, which were remarkable for the blackness of their appearance, and the regularity of their form.

The sides of the hills sloped at an angle of about forty-five degrees, and they were entirely bare of vegetation.

The summits were sharp and defined plainly against the sky.

By the next morning we found ourselves entirely hemmed in by the range, the stream making a turn to the eastward and becoming rapidly narrower and more rapid in its course.

We now journeyed very fast, and made great progress during the day, the banks rising precipitously on either side, and resembling more and more, as we advanced, the walls of a lofty defile.

By night we had advanced, perhaps, twenty miles further, and the river took a more southerly direction.

The cliffs on either side were now full three hundred feet high, and we seemed to be entering a gorge of infinite extent.

The channel was here much broken, and the stream tumultuous.

By the morning of the next day, we were far within the windings of the gorge, and the cliffs, being more than a thousand feet high, towered above us on every side.

The stream ran still more impetuously, and was now near a hundred yards in width.

It presented, to the eye, the perfect image of a swift and turbid river hurrying to its burial among the gigantic walls of basalt.

By noon of the fourth day from the first sight of the range, we reached what we supposed to be the summit of the passage.

Here a singular change was observable in the bed of the stream.

For about a mile the channel was exceedingly shallow, and full of sharp black rocks that rendered the canoeing exceedingly difficult and dangerous.

Our difficulties, however, were of short duration; for, presently, the stream took a furious leap, and, dashing over a precipice of black rock, descended with incredible velocity into a deep gorge, whose blackness rivalled that of the raven, and whose horrors no language can describe.
하지만 우리의 고난은 오래가지 않았다. 곧이어 강은 격렬한 폭포처럼 솟구쳐 날아오르더니, 검은 바위 절벽을 넘어 믿을 수 없는 속도로 떨어졌고, 그 아래에는 까마귀처럼 새까만, 형언할 수 없는 공포를 담은 깊은 협곡이 기다리고 있었다.
