No signs of people were to be seen — indeed, a universal and intense gloom seemed to hang over the whole aspect of nature.
사람의 흔적은 전혀 보이지 않았다. 실로, 자연 전체 위에 깊고도 짙은 어둠이 드리워져 있는 듯했다.
The roaring of the water filled us with a degree of nervous apprehension which we had not felt before.
격렬하게 울부짖는 물소리는, 지금껏 느껴본 적 없던 신경을 곤두세우게 하는 불안감을 우리에게 안겨주었다.
The rays of the sun seemed to struggle to force themselves through the gloom, and when they at length succeeded, only served to render still more clearly the hideousness of the scene.
태양의 빛조차도 이 어둠 속을 뚫고 들어오려 발버둥치는 듯 보였고, 마침내 빛이 스며들었을 때조차, 그것은 이 풍경의 섬뜩함을 더욱 뚜렷하게 드러낼 뿐이었다.
We were evidently approaching the great cataract of which the guide spoke, and so deeply had we become involved in the windings of the gigantic chasm that escape would be a matter of impossibility, even granting we had the full power of motion.

We were on the brink of the gulf, and had no choice but to submit to the current.

Suddenly a loud and long scream burst forth from Augustus, and, looking up, I saw a huge mass of black rock hanging in mid-air, apparently about to fall upon us.
그때 갑자기, 어거스터스가 길고도 날카로운 비명을 질렀고, 내가 위를 올려다보자 거대한 검은 바위 덩어리 하나가 공중에 매달려 있는 듯, 마치 우리 위로 떨어질 듯한 모습이 눈에 들어왔다.
We were instantly overwhelmed and borne away by the torrent, and presently found ourselves whirling amid a chaos of foam and blind confusion.
우리는 순식간에 급류에 휘말려 휩쓸려갔고, 곧이어 거품과 혼란의 소용돌이 속에서 회전하고 있는 자신을 발견했다.
Of what followed after this, I have only an indistinct recollection.
그 이후에 일어난 일들에 대해서는, 나는 희미한 기억만을 가지고 있을 뿐이다.
An impression of dull, confused pain, succeeded by entire insensibility, floated vaguely amid my thoughts.
멍하고 혼란스러운 고통의 인상이 먼저 떠오르다가, 이내 완전한 무감각 상태가 뒤따랐고, 이 모든 것이 희미하게 내 의식 속을 떠돌았다.
