어떻게 읽어야 할까요?
SAT영어 지문을 어떻게 읽어야 하는지 Central Ideas and Details 파트의 지문을 놓고 Logical Image Reading에 대해 배워보겠습니다.
하버드의 심리학자 Stephen M. Kosslyn의 연구에 따르면 머릿속에서 구체적인 장면을 떠올리며 Mental Imagery를 형성하는 과정이 독해력 향상에 중요한 역할을 한다고 합니다. 텍스트의 핵심 개념이나 설명을 시각적으로 이미지화하면 더 깊은 이해와 기억을 도울 수 있다는 것입니다.
쉽게 말하면, 이런 것입니다.
He ate apple. 을
He / ate / apple. 로 읽고 기억을 하는 것과
이런 장면으로 기억하는 것은 차이가 있다는 것이고 SAT영어 문제를 풀 때 문제의 지문을 그냥 문장으로 읽고 넘어가는 것보다 위에서처럼 생생한 이미지로 기억을 하는 것이 문제 푸는데 훨씬 더 도움이 됩니다. (그래서 저학년 학생들을 대상으로 수업을 할 땐, Logical Image Reading를 하면서 고학년에 가서는 Analytical Reading을 할 준비를 하게 됩니다.)
앞으로 10편에 걸쳐서 8학년 이하 학생들이 Logical Image Reading을 어떻게 하면 되는지 알려드리면서 SAT문제도 풀어보도록 하겠습니다.

In many of his sculptures, artist Richard Hunt uses broad forms rather than extreme accuracy to hint at specific people or ideas. In his first major work, Arachne (1956), Hunt constructed the mythical character Arachne, a weaver who was changed into a spider, by welding bits of steel together into something that, although vaguely human, is strange and machine-like. And his large bronze sculpture The Light of Truth (2021) commemorates activist and journalist Ida B. Wells using mainly flowing, curved pieces of metal that create stylized flame.

Logical Image Reading을 하면 보기를 고를 때 '잠깐, 지문에서 뭐라고 했더라?' 하면서 왔다갔다 할 필요가 없습니다. 문장들이 전달하고자 하는 바가 우리 머릿속에 아주 구체적인 이미지로 남아있기 때문에 그 이미지를 가지고 충분히 답을 고를 수 있는 거죠.
Logical Image Reading 을 제대로 하기 위해서 반드시 함께 가야 하는 것이 단어 암기에 대해서는 따로 한 번 더 다루도록 하겠습니다.
