일상의 세계와 역사적 세계의 우발적 조우
Miss Pym was looking after the shop.
미스 핌이 그 가게를 보고 있었다.
The shop was a cavern, a cool, dark, and fragrant cavern.
그 가게는 커다란 동굴이었다. 시원하고 어둡고 향기로운 동굴이었다.
And there were the flowers!
그리고 그 꽃들이 있었다!
Delphiniums, sweet peas, bunches of lilac; and carnations, masses of carnations.
델피움, 스윗피, 라일락 다발, 그리고 카네이션, 카네이션 무더기.
There were roses; there were irises.
Ah yes—so she breathed in the earthy garden sweet smell.
장미도 있었고, 아이리스도 있었다. 아, 좋아 -그래서 그녀는 그 흙냄새가 나는 정원에서 달콤한 냄새를 깊이 들이마셨다.
As she stood talking to Miss Pym who owed her help, and thought her kind, for she had been kind to her years ago; very kind, but she looked older, this year, Miss Pym thought, turning her head from side to side among the irises and roses and nodding tassels of lilac.
그녀는 그녀에게 신세를 졌던 미스 핌에게 말하면서 서있었다. 그리고 여러 해 전에 그녀에게 친전을 베풀었기에 그녀를 친절하다고 생각했다, 아주 친절했다고. 그러나 올해 그녀는 더 나이 들어 보이네 하고 생각하면서 미스 핌은 붓꽃과 장미꽃, 그리고 흔들리는 라일락 꽃송이에 둘러싸여 이리저리 머리를 돌리고 있었다.
There were flowers with the names of beautiful women.
아름다운 여인들의 이름을 가진 꽃들이 있었다.
The light fell upon them, and they seemed to float, to be made of light.
빛이 꽃들 위로 떨어졌고 꽃들은 공중에 떠있는 것 같았으며 빛으로 만들어진 것처럼 보였다.
And as she began to go with Miss Pym from jar to jar, choosing, nonsensically, saying "I will take that, " and "I will take that, " and "How lovely!"
그리고 그녀가 미스 핌과 같이 꽃을 고르며 의미없이 "이걸로 주세요" 그리고 "이것도요" 그리고 "어머, 정말 사랑스러워요!"하고 말하며 화병 사이로 걷기 시작했을 때였다.
Suddenly, a pistol shot in the street outside!
갑자기, 바깥 길거리에서 권총 소리가 났다.
“Dear, those motor cars,” said Miss Pym, going to the window to look, and coming back and smiling apologetically with her hands full of sweet peas, as if those motor cars, those tyres of motor cars, were all her fault.
"저런, 저 자동차들이예요, " 미스 핌이 창으로 가서 보고서는 돌아와서 손에 스윗피를 가득 든 채, 사과하듯 웃으며 말했다. 마치 자동차들, 자동차의 타이어들이 모두 자기의 잘못인 것처럼
The violent explosion which made Mrs. Dalloway jump and Miss Pym go to the window and apologise came from a motor car which had drawn to the side of the pavement precisely opposite Mulberry’s window.
댈러웨이 부인을 펄쩍 뛰게 만들었고 미스 핌을 창문쪽으로 가게 하고 사과하게 만든 그 격렬한 폭발소리는 멀베리 가게 창문의 정확히 맞은편 도로가에 놓여진 자동차에서 나온 것이었다.
Passers-by who of course stopped and stared, had just time to see a face of the very greatest importance against the dove-grey upholstery, before a male hand drew the blind and there was nothing to be seen except a square of ivory Venetian blind.
행인들은 물론 멈추어서 쳐다보았다. 차의 내부는 비둘기빛 회색으로 장식되어 있었고 거기에 매우 중요한 인사의 얼굴이 잠깐 비치었다. 하지만 곧 한 남자가 차양막으로 그것을 가렸으며 아이보리색 베네치이풍 차양막 외에는 아무것도 보이지 않았다.
But rumours were at once in circulation.

Whose face was it?

Nobody knew.
