At that time, the World Honored One entered a samadhi called "extinguishing the suffering and distress of all beings." After he entered this samadhi, a great light came forth from his flesh-cowl. From amid that light he proclaimed this magnificent dharani:
그때 세존께서 삼마지(三摩地)에 드셨나니 이름은 ‘일체 중생의 고난을 소멸하는 삼마지’이니라. 이미 선정에 드시자 정수리의 살 상투[肉髮] 가운데서 큰 광명이 나왔고, 그 광명 가운데서 위대한 다라니(神呪)를 설하셨느니라.
Na mo bo qie fa di. Bi sha she. Ju lu bi liu li. Bo la po. He la she ye. Da tuo jie duo ye. E la he di. San miao san pu tuo ye. Da zhi tuo nan. Bi sha shi. Bi sha shi. Bi sha she. San mo jie di. Suo he.
나모보체파디 비샤셔 쥐루비류리 보라포 허라셔예 다퉈제둬예 어라허디 산먁싼푸퉈예 다즈퉈 안 비샤스 비샤스 비샤셔 샨모제디숴허
After he had spoken that mantra from amid the light, the earth quaked and moved and emitted great light. All beings' sicknesses and suffering were cast off, and they felt peaceful and blissful.
그때 약사유리광여래께서 광명 가운데 이 신주(神呪)를 설하자, 대지(大地)는 온통 진동하였으며, 다시 큰 광명을 발하여 일체 중생의 병고를 모두 제거하고 안락을 얻도록 하셨느니라.
Commentary: 해설
At that time, the World Honored One, Medicine Master Vaidurya Light Tathagata, entered a samadhi called "extinguishing the suffering and distress of all beings." After he entered this samadhi, a great light came Samadhi is Sanskrit and means proper concentration and proper reception. From the invisible appearance on the crown of Medicine Master Buddha's head, from his flesh-cowl, one of the 32 hallmarks, he emitted a boundless light.
그때 세존, 약사유리광여래께서 삼마지(三摩地)에 드셨나니 이름은 ‘일체 중생의 고난을 소멸하는 삼마지’이니라. 이미 선정에 드시자 정수리의 살 상투[肉髮] 가운데서 큰 광명이 나왔고, 삼매는 산스크리트어로 정념正念과 정정正定을 의미합니다. 32상의 특징 중 하나로 약사부처님는 정수리의 살 상투에서 무한한 빛을 뿜어냈습니다.
From amid that light he proclaimed this magnificent dharani.
그 광명 가운데서 위대한 다라니(神呪)를 설하셨느니라.
Wishing to save and protect all living beings and to relieve them of sickness and suffering, he spoke the mantra. Dharani is a Sanskrit word that means:
모든 중생을 구제, 보호하고 병과 고통이 낫기를 바라며 진언을 설하셨습니다. 다라니는 산스크리트어로 다음을 의미합니다.
1. To uphold and maintain: can contain all merit and virtues
지키고 유지하는 것(수지): 모든 공덕을 포함합니다.
2. To cover: can cover obstructions.
덮는 것: 장애를 덮습니다.
If you recite this very short mantra faithfully and single-mindedly, you will find that it has infinitely many wonderful functions. A doctor can use this mantra to enable his patients to have a speedy recovery. With the mantra's help, he can become an extremely good doctor. Everyone, whether one is a doctor or not, should recite this mantra. If you recite it on behalf of sick people, they will soon get well.
여러분에 이 아주 짧은 진언지만 믿음을 갖고 일심으로 염하면, 진언의 무한한 놀라운 작용에 대해 알게 됩니다. 예를 들어 의사는 환자가 빠르게 회복될 수 있도록 이 진언을 사용할 수 있습니다. 진언의 도움으로, 그는 매우 좋은 의사가 될 수 있습니다. 의사이든 아니든 모두가 이 진언을 암송해야 합니다. 병자를 위해서 암송하면 병이 금방 나을 것입니다.
Mantra has four meanings:
진언에는 4가지 의미가 있습니다.
1. Names of ghosts and spirit kings: making the ghosts behave. This is Mundane Complete Giving, enabling living beings to be happy.
귀신과 영들의 왕의 이름: 귀신을 부립니다. 중생을 행복하게 하는 세속적인 완전한 보시입니다.
2. Secret passwords like in the army: if know then you can pass. This is Universal Complete Giving, enabling living beings to produce good.
군대에서와 같은 비밀 암호: 비밀 암호를 알면 통과할 수 있습니다. 중생을 선하게 하는 보편적인 완전한 보시입니다.
3. To cover evil. This is Curative Complete Giving, enabling living beings to destroy evil.
악을 덮음. 이것은 중생이 악을 파괴할 수 있게 하는 치유의 완전한 보시입니다.
4. The secret words of the Buddhas. This is Primary Meaning Complete Giving, enabling living beings to enter the principles.
부처님의 은밀한 언어. 이것은 중생이 이치 안으로 들어갈 수 있게 하는 주된 의미의 완전한 보시입니다.
Question: You said earlier that cultivators should avoid imposing their will on others. If we practice mantras which make the yin beings and evil people stay away from us, doesn’t that count as oppression?
질문: 선사님은 앞서 말씀하시길 수행자들은 자신의 뜻을 다른 사람들에게 강요하지 말아야 한다고 하셨습니다. 음의 존재와 악한 사람을 멀리하게 하는 진언을 수행한다면, 그것도 억압하는 것이 아닌가요?
Answer: No. We practice tantras without the intention of oppressing others and therefore do not commit such offenses. In fact, we can’t always recite mantras everywhere. If we happen to be in the yin territory, do you think that they’ll allow us to cause trouble?
답변: 아닙니다. 우리는 타인을 억압할 의도 없이 탄트라를 수행해서 그런 잘못을 저지르지 않습니다. 사실, 항상 어디에서나 진언을 염할 수는 없습니다. 우연히 음의 영역에 있다면, 우리가 문제를 일으키게 그들이 허락할 것 같나요?
Let me tell you a story. A couple of decades ago, my younger brother went to the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas and learned a very powerful mantra. He managed to recite it from memory like a waterfall when he drove back to Los Angeles. When he drove by the airport, he had a false thought: mantras are designed to subdue demons, and there was a nude dancing place by the airport which surely must have quite a few of them around. That would be a great place to test the effectiveness of the mantra. So he drove there, got inside, ordered a beer and sat in the front row to watch the show. As he finished his beer, he wanted to try out the mantra. What do you think happened? He could not even recite a single word. He tried and tried but simply could not. Finally he gave up and left. As soon as he drove off the parking lot, he remembered the mantra again!

Mantras are transliterated and not translated. There are five things that are not translated:

1. Secrets: like dharanis.

2. Multiple meanings: like Baghavan.
여러 의미가 있는 것: 바가반
3. Not existent in our land: like Jambudana tree.

4. Accord with ancient use: like Annutara-samyak-sambodhi.
고대부터 사용된 것: 아뇩다라삼먁삼보리
5. Producing goodness: e.g. Prajna.
선(착함)을 일으키는 것: 반야
The mantra consists of transliterated sounds, which often cannot be explained. You are not supposed to understand what the mantra means. It is wonderful precisely because it is not understood. Since you can't think about what it means, you'll be able to recite single-mindedly and obtain a response. Mantras are expedients. They rely on samadhi as their substance.
진언은 종종 설명할 수 없는 소리들로 구성되어 있습니다. 진언이 무슨 뜻인지 이해해서는 안 됩니다. 그것은 이해할 수 없기 때문에 매우 묘합니다. 의미를 생각할 수 없기 때문에, 여러분은 한 마음으로 염할 수 있고 응답을 얻을 수 있습니다. 진언은 방편으로 삼매의 체體에 의존합니다.
The mantra goes:
Na mo (take refuge) bo qie fa di (Baghavan). Bi sha she. Ju lu (Medicine Master) bi liu li (Lapis Lazuli). Bo la po (light). He la she ye (king). Da tuo jie duo ye (Thus Come One). E la he di (Worthy of offerings: one of the ten titles of the Buddha). San miao san pu tuo ye (Proper Equal Right Enlightenment). Da zhi tuo (recite like this) nan (original mother; ghosts stand to attention). Bi sha shi. Bi sha shi. Bi sha she (Medicine! medicine! medicine!). San mo jie di (universally rescue and cross over living beings). Suo he (quickly accomplish).

Simply put, the mantra says: “Take refuge with the World Honored One, Medicine Master Lapis Lazuli Light King Thus Come One, Worthy of Offerings, of Proper and Equal Enlightenment. Recite like this: “nan”, use medicine to cure all living beings’ sicknesses and suffering, enabling them to immediately get well.”
간단히 말해서, 진언의 뜻은 다음과 같습니다: "세존, 약사유리광여래, 응공, 정등각께 귀의합니다. 이와 같이 염하세요: “옴” 모든 중생의 병고를 치유하기 위해 약을 사용해서 그들을 즉시 낫게 합니다.
