Translation? Chinese? Absolutely. Normally it’s Dharma master Yuan Hui is Dharma talk during lunch but since she’s busy eating. Ok, I promise that we take turn. Next, in the future Dharma assembly. First of all, welcome to our Guan Yin Enlightenment Dharma assembly. Frankly, I don’t know whole about enlightenment. Therefore I don’t know what to talk about. Does anyone know Guan Yin Enlightenment circumstances? It’s a question. Anyone? Anyone knows?

무엇보다도 관음 성도일 법회에 오신 걸 환영합니다. 솔직히 나는 전혀 깨달음에 관해 모릅니다. 그러므로 나는 뭐에 관해 얘기할지 모릅니다. 누구 관음 성도에 관해 아는 사람 있나요? 이건 질문입니다. 아는 분? 아는 사람?

I asked madam Usina, you are so well read, how come you don’t know. Raise your hand, don’t be shy now. Anyone knows the story? This is fascinating because people celebrate, they don’t know why, how Guan Yin got enlighten.

나는 마담 유지나에게 물었습니다. 당신은 읽은 게 많은 데 어째서 모르는 거죠. 손 들어보세요, 쑥스러워 말구요. 그 얘기 아는 분? 이건 놀랍습니다. 왜냐하면 사람들은 기념하면서도 관음보살이 왜, 어떻게 깨달았는지 모르는군요.

Oh, I was about to tell you how I made a mistake and Guan Yin came and rescue. I guess that’s not as interesting as Guan Yin becoming enlighten. Which one you want to hear, Guan Yin Enlightenment or.

오, 나는 내가 실수를 했는데 관음보살님이 오셔서 구해준 걸 얘기하려 했습니다. 그건 관음보살님이 깨달은 것보단 덜 흥미로울 것 같군요. 여러분은 어떤 걸 듣고 싶나요, 관음보살 깨달은 얘기 아니면?

Ok, here’s the story. Accoring to Chinese tradition, Guan Yin stays in Nan Pu Tuo island, right? Is that right? Nan Pu Tuo island, right? Every one knows that. They have most excellent vegetarian dishes in this area.

오케이. 그 얘기를 하자면 이렇습니다. 중국 전통에 다르면 관음보살님은 남보타섬에 머무르십니다. 맞나요? 남보타섬, 맞죠? 모두들 압니다. 그 지역 채식 요리들은 가장 훌륭합니다.

What happened is that according to Asian folklore, Asian tradition, Guan Yin has a transformation body by the name of Miao Shan, Wonderful Goodness. Yes, she was princess, Miao Shan Gong Zhu.

아시아 민담에, 아시아 전통에 따르면 관음보살님은 묘선, 경이로운 선함 이란 이름의 화신으로 나투셨습니다. 네, 그녀는 묘선공주라는 공주셨습니다.

So she was back then, there was Chinese emperor who does not have any prince who succeed him. But he had only 3 princesses as daughters. So he placed his hope on being able to find some suitable princes, son in laws to help him succeed his throne.

당시에 후계를 이를 왕자가 없던 중국 황제가 있었습니다. 공주인 딸들만 셋 있었습니다. 그래서 그는 자신의 왕좌를 이을 만한 왕자, 사위를 찾는 데 희망을 걸었습니다.

So he quickly married the first two elders. Miao Shan is the third, the last one, the youngest one. So the first two princesses got married, the emperor said nah, not good enough.

그래서 얼른 두 장녀를 결혼시켰습니다. 묘선은 셋째, 막내, 가장 어렸습니다. 그래서 첫 두 공주는 결혼했지만, 황제는 아냐, 별로야, 라고 했습니다.

So he placed all his remaining hopes to find a suitable husband for his youngest and his favorite Miao Shan princess. But unfortunately Miao Shan has other idea, she refused to get married.

그래서 그는 그의 남은 희망을 전부 그의 막내, 가장 아끼는 묘선 공주에게 마땅한 남편을 찾는데 걸었습니다. 하지만 안타깝게도 묘선에게는 다른 생각이 있어서 결혼을 거부했습니다.

So the king said, the king sent her to convent to get a flavor of what is like to disobey his orders and see how tough life in the convent is like, nunnery is like. But to the king’s surprise, Miao Shan really enjoyed herself. Instead of being disappointed, she gets really excited and decided to, she wants to become a Bhikshuni herself.

그래서 왕은 자신의 명령을 따르지 않으면 어떤지, 그리고 수도 생활이, 비구니 생활이 얼마나 힘든지 맛보여 주려고 그녀를 절로 보냈습니다. 하지만 묘선은 정말로 (그 생활을) 즐거워 하며 왕을 놀래켰습니다. 실망하는 대신에, 그녀는 정말로 신나 하며 직접 비구니가 되고 싶어 했습니다.

So the king got very upset. So he put her, he destroyed the temple that she stayed, killed 200 nuns who stayed there, brought her back to the capital and said, you don’t get married, I will put you to death.

그래서 왕은 매우 화났습니다. 그래서 그녀가 머물렀던 절을 파괴하고 거기 지내던 200명의 비구니는 죽였습니다. 왕은 공주를 수도로 데려와선, 결혼하지 않으면 죽여주마, 라고 했습니다.

Miao Shan refused, so the father sent her to the execution, the executioner’s block. When Miao Shan got there, she could smell the blood from the area. The executioner was about to chop her head off, was going like this, ok.

묘선은 거부했고 아버지는 그녀를 처형장에 보냈습니다. 묘선이 거기 이르자, 그녀는 그 근방에서 나는 피 냄새를 맡을 수 있었습니다. 처형 집행자가 그녀의 머리를 베려고 할 때, 이렇게 할 때 말입니다. 오케이.

At that very moment, the sky darkened, totally dark. And only the light from the sky from the heaven shun brightly on Miao Shan only. And then people were frozen in fright. All of sudden, out from nowhere, appeared a humongous gigantic tiger, white tiger.

바로 그 순간에 하늘이 완전히 어두워지더니, 천상에서 내려 온 빛이 오직 묘선만을 비추었습니다. 사람들은 겁에 질려 얼어붙었습니다. 홀연히 난데없이 거대한 흰색 호랑이가 나타났습니다.

So the big white tiger grab and hold Miao Shan princess, ok, by his mouth because he’s a huge tiger and carried her off. And he brought her back, it white tiger happened to be a manifestation of a god in the area. He appeared to save Miao Shan princess. Brought her back to the mountain.

거대 백호는 묘선 공주를 입으로 물어 들고, 그는 아주 큰 호랑이였기 때문에 그녀를 들고 날랐습니다. 그녀를 데려온 백호는 그 지역 신이었습니다. 그가 묘선 공주를 구하려고 나타나서 산으로 그녀를 데려왔습니다.

And then Amitabha Buddha came to visit Miao Shan. He said you need a place to stay. And best and safest for you to stay is Nan Pu Tuo island because it’s rounded by ocean that is full of dragons, very ferocious dragons.

그러곤 아미타 부처님이 묘선을 찾아오셨습니다. 그는 네가 머무를 곳이 필요하구나. 네가 지내기 최고로 안전한 곳은 사나운 용들로 가득한 바다로 둘러싸인 남보타섬이다, 라고 말씀하셨습니다.

That’s where Miao Shan went and stayed there for 9 years. She went there and meditated. She crossed her legs, stayed in full lotus for 9 years. So she meditated for 9 years there. That’s how she became enlightened.

그곳으로 묘선은 가서 9년간 머물렀습니다. 그녀는 거기 가서 명상했습니다. 결가부좌를 하고 9년간 지냈습니다. 그리고 9년 간 그곳에서 명상했습니다. 그렇게 그녀는 깨달았습니다.

So the day we celebrated, the Guan Yin Enlightenment Day is that the Miao Shan became enlightened. Now this is the rest of story. After she became enlightened, the young Bodhisattva Good Wealth came to study with her, to serve her. The image you see of Guan Yin accompanied by youngsters, that’s Good Wealth Bodhisattva right there. Just in case you don’t know. Shan Zai.

우리가 기념한 관음성도일은 묘선이 깨달은 날입니다. 지금부터는 나머지 얘기입니다. 그녀가 깨달은 후에, 선재 동자 보살이 그녀와 수학하러, 그녀를 모시러 왓습니다. 여러분이 어린 아이와 함께 있는 관음보살 그림을 보면, 그게 선재 동자입니다. 혹시 몰랐다면 말입니다. 선재.

One day, the third prince, the son of the dragon king in that ocean right there, surrounding the island went playing around. So he used the spiritual power to transform dragon himself to fish. And while he was swimming, he was caught by a net. So Guan Yin Bodhisattva realized that, so she immediately sent Good Wealth to the seafood market and bought all the fish and free the prince, dragon prince from death.

하루는 그 섬을 둘러싼 바다의 용왕의 셋째 왕자, 아들이 놀러 갔습니다. 그는 신통력으로 용에서 물고기로 변했습니다. 그가 헤엄치던 중 그물에 걸렸습니다. 관음보살님이 그걸 아시곤 즉시 선재를 어시장으로 보내서 모든 물고기를 사서 그 왕자를, 용 왕자를 죽음에서 풀어주셨습니다.

That’s why you see a lot of Guan Yin’s picture riding dragons because dragon is very very grateful for that. So she always has dragon surrounding her and she can ride dragons.

그래서 많은 그림에서 관음보살님이 용을 타고 계신 걸 봅니다. 용이 아주 감사해 하기 때문입니다. 그래서 항상 주변에 관음보살님 주변에 용이 둘러싸고 있고 용을 타십니다.

And also dragon king was so grateful for Guan Yin’s help toward his third prince that he immediately sent his grand daughter, the dragon girl to bring a wish fulfilling pearl to offer to Guan Yin.

또 용왕은 관음보살님이 셋째 왕자를 도와주신 것에 매우 감사해서 즉시 그의 손녀를, 용녀를 보내 관음보살님께 여의주를 공양했습니다.

See, see, see the fish. It’s beautiful. Oh, this is perfect. How did you, you must have ? Hey, look at this guy here. This is what the story I’m telling about. Look at this guy. This is the fish, ok, the prince right here. This is third prince right here. This is the dragon girl. And this is Shan Zai. This is Good Wealth.

[막 공양간에 도착한 누군가가 관음보살, 선재동자, 물고기, 용녀가 들어간 조각상을 가져온 것으로 추정됨] 자, 자, 자 보십시오. 아름답네요. 오, 완벽해요. 어떻게, ? 한 거죠? 자, 여길 보십시오. 이게 내가 말한 얘기입니다. 여길 보십시오. 이건 물고기이고, 오케이, 그 왕자가 여깄습니다. 이게 셋째 왕자입니다. 이건 용녀입니다, 이건 선재입니다.

This is the third prince who was caught in the net. This has not been pre-arranged. She was brought it. Look at the response you got today. No prearrangement. I didn’t even know until today what I am gonna be talking about. This is amazing. She doesn’t even know and brought this along. And she doesn’t stay here yet. She’s only. That’s fascinating. This is fascinating.

그물에 걸렸던 셋째 왕자입니다. 이건 미리 짠 게 아닙니다. 나는 오늘까지도 내가 무슨 얘기를 해야 할지 몰랐습니다. 놀랍군요. 그녀도 몰랐지만 이걸 들고 왔습니다. 그녀는 여기 있지도 않았어요. 아주 멋집니다. 멋져요.

Because what happened is that when the grand daughter, the dragon girl came to offer the pearl to Guan Yin. She fell in love with Guan Yin. This woman, this Bodhisattva is so adorned. So she never came back. She stayed with Guan Yin.

왜냐하면 그 손녀, 용녀가 관음보살님께 여의주를 공양하러 갔을 때, 그녀는 관음 보살님께 푹 빠졌습니다. 이 분은, 이 보살님은 참 장엄하셔. 그래서 그녀는 돌아오지 않고 관음보살님과 지냈습니다.

This is fascinating, This is beautiful. Oh. Very nice. That’s today’s Dharma right there. Have faith. This is fascinating. I didn’t realize that I will be speaking about these 3 characters here because it always bothered me. I looked at it, images, I couldn’t understand why they are there. I couldn’t understand their relationships.

멋져요, 아름답습니다. 오, 아주 근사해요. 바로 이게 오늘의 법입니다. 믿음을 가지십시오. 아주 놀랍습니다. 나는 여기 이 세 인물에 관해 얘기할 거라곤 몰랐는데, 왜냐면 이게 항상 나를 괴롭혔습니다. 나는 그림을 보면서 왜 그들이 있는지 이해 못했기 때문입니다. 그들의 관계를 이해하지 못했습니다.

Do you have another one? Buddha? Sure. Ok, I keep my eyes on it. Yesterday she also bringing out gorgeous Buddha statue. Yesterday I went to old antique store close by, they have very nicely carved in wood Buddha statue.Very finely carved. I didn’t buy anything because I saw her Buddha statue. So when I looked at antique stuff, umm, it’s no good. Her statue is exquisite.

다른 조각도 있습니까? 불상이오? 물론입니다. 오케이, 계속 보고 있을게요. 어제 그녀가 또다른 아름다운 불상을 들고 왔었습니다. 어제 나는 근처 골동품 가게에 갔는데 아주 근사하게 나무로 조각된 불상이 있었습니다. 아주 잘 조각 되어 있었죠. 나는 그녀의 불상을 봤기 때문에 아무것도 사지 않았습니다. 그래서 그 골동품들을 보고서는, 음 별로야. 그녀의 조각상은 정교해.
