Mahakatyayana
마하가전연 摩訶迦旃延
The Great Hair Cutting Scissors 大翦剃 were male descendants of the Brahmin class. In the ancient times, these immortals (‘immortal’ means having a very long life, but not living forever) cultivated in secluded mountains. They grew old and their hair and beards became long, which they did not cut because the Brahmins forbade cutting hair. One Brahmin had two sons. The two brothers came to visit their father and the younger son offered trim all the immortals’ hair. They all agreed and later accomplished the (immortal) Way. Subsequently this class was named ‘Hair Cutting Scissors’. This group was composed of the ancestors of this immortal.
대전체大翦剃(큰 머리 깎는 가위라는 뜻)는 브라만 계급의 남자 후손입니다. 고대에 이 브라만은 외딴 산에서 수행했습니다. (그들은 매우 오래 살지만, 영원히 살지는 않습니다.) 그들은 머리카락과 수염이 길었습니다. 브라만족은 머리카락을 자르는 것을 금지했기 때문에 자르지 않았습니다. 그 중 한 브라만은 두 아들이 있었습니다. 두 아들은 아버지를 찾아왔고 작은 아들은 브라만들의 머리를 다듬어 주겠다고 했습니다. 그들은 모두 동의했고 나중에 도를 성취했습니다. 그 후 이들은 '머리 깎는 가위'로 불리었습니다.
Katyayana means fan cord 扇繩. Katyayana’s mother loved him dearly. Soon after birth, his father died and his mother wanted to re-marry but this child was like a tie that prevented her from doing so.
가전연은 끈(扇繩)이라는 뜻입니다. 가전연의 어머니는 그를 끔찍이 사랑했습니다. 태어난 지 얼마 되지 않아 아버지가 돌아가시고 어머니는 재혼을 원했지만 이 아이는 어머니의 결혼을 가로막는 끈 같은 존재였습니다.
In the past, Katyayana used the Five Precepts to sweep the causal ground. He therefore obtained the result of being upright and proper without compare. He traveled extensively to transform and guide beings. He once met with a King who was very impressed with his upright and proper demeanor. When the king asked the World Honored One about Katyayana’s upright appearance, the Buddha replied that, since the King already used the Five precepts to eliminate defilements, he too would obtain a similar upright and proper comportment. The King was greatly pleased and brought forth the Bodhi mind.
과거 가전연은 인지를 닦기 위해 오계를 사용하였습니다. 그래서 그는 비할바 없이 바르고 올바른 과를 얻었습니다. 그는 중생들을 변화시키고 인도하기 위해 널리 돌아다녔습니다. 한번은 왕을 만났는데 왕은 그의 곧고 위의있는 태도에 깊은 인상을 받았습니다. 왕이 세존에게 가전연의 곧은 모습에 대해 물었을 때, 부처님은 왕에게 이르길 왕도 이미 오계로 더러움을 없앴기 때문에 이와같이 곧은 위의를 갖출 것이라고 대답했습니다. 왕은 매우 환희하며 보리심을 내었습니다.
This Venerable Sage’s debating words rushed out like heavy waves. His facial features were flawless like crystal. He could use the wisdom torch to destroy the long night’s darkness and could rapidly break or destroy his opponent’s case with sharp words. He defeated the doctrines of the six famous contemporary teachers’ and their cohorts.
논쟁을 하면 가전연의 말은 거센 파도처럼 튀어나왔습니다. 그의 얼굴은 크리스탈처럼 흠잡을 데가 없었습니다. 그는 지혜의 횃불을 사용하여 긴 밤의 어둠을 파괴할 수 있었고 날카로운 말로 상대의 주장을 빠르게 타파할 수 있었습니다. 그는 당시 6명의 유명한 스승들과 지지자들의 교리를 물리쳤습니다.
Katyayana means “literary elegance 文飾”—his eloquence was unparalleled, and he was foremost in debate 論義. The Agama sutras told how he debated with a Brahmin externalist who did not believe in the heavens or hells, but believed only in nihilism. This externalist’s premise was that if people went to hells or heavens after death, they would have come back to tell their family and friends. Mahakatyayana explained that those who went to the heavens would never bother coming back because that would be like going back to an outhouse. As for the hell dwellers, they could not come back because they were in a prison and could no longer come and go as they pleased. The externalist was speechless and conceded.
가전연은 "문학적인 우아함"을 의미하는데, 그의 웅변은 비길 데 없이 뛰어났습니다. 그는 논쟁에서 가장 뛰어났습니다. 아함경에는 그가 천국과 지옥을 믿지 않고 허무주의만을 믿는 브라만 외도와 어떻게 논쟁했는지 나타나 있습니다. 이 외도들은 만약 사람들이 죽은 후에 지옥이나 천상으로 간다면, 그들은 가족과 친구들에게 이에 대해 말하기 위해 돌아왔을 것이다라는 전제를 주장하였습니다. 마하가전연은 천국에 간 사람들은 별장으로 돌아간 것과 같기 때문에 다시는 돌아오지 않을 것이고 지옥의 존재들은 감옥에 있기 때문에 더 이상 마음대로 드나들 수 없어 돌아오지 못 한다고 했습니다. 그 외도는 할 말을 잃고 패배를 인정했습니다.
There are four kinds of unobstructed eloquence:
장애없는 변재에는 네 가지 종류가 있습니다.
1. Unobstructed eloquence in Dharma: To be able to explain the Dharma without obstruction.
법무애法無碍: 법을 막힘없이 설명할 수 있습니다.
2. Unobstructed eloquence in meaning: To be able to explain the Dharma’s limitless meanings.
의무애義無碍: 법의 무한한 의미에 대해 설명할 수 있습니다.
3. Unobstructed eloquence in phrasing: One’s rhetoric is effective.
사무애辭無碍: 미사여구가 효과적입니다.
4. Eloquence of unobstructed delight in speech: To take delight in explaining the Dharma by enrapturing one’s listeners.
요설무애樂說無碍: 청자를 기쁘게 하여 설법을 즐깁니다.
‘Katyayana’ also means “good shoulder 好肩” because his shoulders were beautiful. In addition, it means “victorious thinker 思勝”, again because of his unobstructed eloquence.
가전연은 또한 어깨가 아름다웠기 때문에 "좋은 어깨"라는 의미도 가지고 있습니다. 그뿐만 아니라 '승리한 사상가'라는 뜻도 있는데, 역시 그의 장애없는 변재 때문입니다.
Of the eight pairs of virtues/distinctive competences according to which the Great Arhats are listed, Katyayana manifests eloquence.
위대한 아라한의 열거된 8쌍의 미덕/특징 중 가전연은 달변을 나타냅니다.
마하가전연(摩訶迦旃延)은 석가모니의 십대제자 중 한 명으로, 교리 해석과 논리적 논쟁에 뛰어나 ‘논의제일(論議第一)’로 불리는 인물입니다. 남인도 브라만 출신으로 황금빛 피부를 가졌으며, 부처님의 법(法)을 체계적으로 설명하여 전법에 크게 기여한 성자입니다.
