Good evening, everyone. I am gonna speak in English and Vietnamese. You need translation into Chinese, you need to sit over there. Welcome to our Fo Qi which is Buddha recitation week.

여러분, 안녕하세요. 저는 영어와 베트남어로 말할 겁니다. 중국어 통역이 필요하신 분은 저쪽에 앉으세요. 저희 불칠, 즉 부처님 명호를 염불하는 주간에 오신 것을 환영합니다.

We are very happy to have so many of you come on Sunday night. We realize that you have very busy schedule and you take the time off and come to the temple. It makes me very happy.

일요일 저녁에 이렇게 많은 분들이 와 주셔서 매우 기쁩니다. 여러분 모두 일정이 매우 바쁘신데도 시간을 내어 도량에 와 주셨다는 것을 알고 있습니다. 그 점이 저를 참으로 기쁘게 합니다.

In particular, I want to acknowledge that, [baby crying] It’s ok, it’s ok. Don’t worry. We are used to it. They all start like that, in a few years, you know, they become so quiet and so well behaved. And they get the message eventually.

특히 한 가지 말씀드리고 싶습니다. [아기 울음소리] 괜찮습니다, 괜찮아요. 걱정하지 마십시오. 우리는 이런 상황에 익숙합니다. 다들 시작은 저렇습니다. 몇 년 지나면 (아이들이) 아주 조용해지고, 예의도 바르게 됩니다. 결국 아이들은 저절로 (어떻게 해야하는지) 알게 됩니다.

We have a boy who started like that, climbing all over the cushions, making a lot of noises and crying and screaming. 6 years later, he’s so well behaved. Right? See, see? He got it. Very fast boy.

이렇게 시작한 한 남자아이가 있었습니다. 방석 위를 이리저리 기어 다니고, 큰 소리를 내고, 울고, 소리 지르곤 했습니다. 그런데 6년이 지나니 아주 얌전해졌습니다. 그렇지요? 보셨지요? 이제는 알게 되었습니다. 아주 빠른 아이입니다.

Ok. I would acknowledge, that’s how I say the group of people in San Jose who came here today, how long will you stay here? Someone who are leaving on Friday. So it’s a lot of personal sacrifice for you to come. We are glad that you decide to come here today.

좋습니다. 오늘 여기 오신 산호세에서 오신 분들을 특히 환영하고 싶습니다. 얼마나 머무르실 예정인가요? 어떤 분은 금요일에 떠난다고 들었습니다. 이렇게 여기 오시려고 개인적인 희생을 많이 하셨을 겁니다. 오늘 이곳에 오기로 결정해 주셔서 저희는 매우 기쁩니다.

I also want to look around, you see that we have quiet a few. Our temple is maybe small but we have international assembly. Young and old come, people of different continents, different countries, and so it’s quite a pleasure to share these cultivation with all of you.

또 한 번 둘러보십시오. 생각보다 많은 분들이 함께하고 있습니다. 우리 절은 작을지 몰라도, 국제적인 도량입니다. 젊은 분도, 연로하신 분도, 여러 대륙과 나라에서 온 분들이 함께하고 있습니다. 여러분과 이렇게 수행을 나눌 수 있다는 것이 참으로 기쁜 일입니다.

So why are we practicing Buddhism? You see, it’s very difficult to lecture to such diverse group. People are very knowledgeable as well people are not knowledgeable at all. I’m not looking at anyone particular. [master laughing]

그래서 우리가 왜 불교를 수행할까요? 이처럼 다양한 사람들 앞에서 법을 설하는 것은 매우 어렵습니다. 많이 아는 분들도 있고, 전혀 모르는 분들도 있습니다. 누구를 특별히 지목하려는 게 아닙니다. [마스터 웃음]

Those who are new to us, feel free. This Dharma talk is open ended. Meaning that if you have any questions, you have anythings that bothers you, would like to discuss, bring it up. Please feel free to do that. It’s free flowing. Nothing is off limits. Nothing is taboo. So feel free, ok.

처음 오신 분들은 편하게 생각하십시오. 이 법문은 열린 자리입니다. 궁금한 것이 있거나, 마음에 걸리는 것이 있거나, 함께 나누고 싶은 주제가 있다면 언제든지 말씀해 주십시오. 자유롭게 진행합니다. 금기되는 주제도 없고, 피해야 할 것도 없습니다. 그러니 편하게 질문하십시오.

It’s sharing of experience, sharing of mutual learn from each other. So if you have a question, you are not clear about something, please raise your hand. We’ll be glad to explain to you.

이 시간은 경험을 나누고 서로에게 배우는 자리입니다. 궁금한 점이 있거나, 이해되지 않는 부분이 있다면 손을 들어 주십시오. 기쁘게 설명해 드리겠습니다.

So it helps to remind all of us the nature of Buddhism. Buddhism is started by this prince, the Buddha, Shakyamuni Buddha, he came to our world because he concerns about serious problem for humanity.

그래서 우리는 불교의 본질을 다시 한 번 상기할 필요가 있습니다. 불교는 한 왕자님에 의해 시작되었습니다. 그분이 바로 부처님, 석가모니 부처님입니다. 인류의 심각한 문제를 깊이 염려하셨기 때문에 이 세상에 오셨습니다.

What is this problem? He sees that we have this serious problem called ‘birth and death’. Such a serious problem and yet he said mankind is like a little boy there. Maybe you are mature, very smart but just like him, you are running around, playing with your toys in a burning house.

그 문제란 무엇인가요?

부처님께서는 우리가 ‘생사’라는 심각한 문제를 안고 있다는 것을 보셨습니다. 이처럼 중대한 문제인데도, 인류는 마치 저 작은 아이와 같다고 하셨습니다. 여러분이 아무리 성숙하고 똑똑하다고 해도, 결국 불타는 집 안에서 장난감을 가지고 뛰어노는 아이와 다를 바 없다는 것입니다.

The problem of humanity is that you don’t realize, we don’t realize that we are inside of burning house. This world is very dangerous place. We are so oblivious to it, so oblivious to danger that. It’s very dangerous, our life is very dangerous. Our existence is in danger.

인류의 문제는 우리가 불타는 집 안에 있다는 사실을 깨닫지 못한다는 데 있습니다. 이 세상은 매우 위험한 곳입니다. 그런데 우리는 그 위험을 전혀 자각하지 못한 채 살아가고 있습니다. 우리의 삶은 위험하고, 우리의 존재 자체도 위태롭습니다.

Like we are in a burning house. Our house is burning. Why is it so pessimistic? Because it’s true. I bring to your attention. This venerable Bhikshuni, venerable nun here. Her son who’s younger than many of you, gone to an accident. Her son has gone into car accident he passed away. So life can be taken away from us just like that.

마치 불타는 집 안에 있는 것과 같습니다. 우리의 집이 불타고 있습니다. 왜 이렇게 비관적일까요? 그게 진실이기 때문입니다. 여러분의 주의를 환기시키고 싶습니다. 여기 계신 이 비구니 스님을 보십시오. 이분의 아들은 여기 계신 많은 분들보다도 어렸는데, 교통사고를 당해 세상을 떠났습니다. 이처럼 우리의 생명은 한순간에 사라질 수 있습니다.

It could happen to any of us. What happens after you die? After you die, the Buddha teaches, in the Buddhist teaching, he’s very detailed about it. Actually the Buddha is the most detailed description on what happens to us after we die.

그 일은 우리 누구에게나 일어날 수 있습니다.

죽은 뒤에는 어떻게 됩니까? 부처님께서는 불교 가르침에서 그 부분을 매우 상세히 설명하셨습니다. 사실 죽은 뒤에 우리에게 어떤 일이 일어나는지에 대해 가장 구체적으로 설명한 분이 바로 부처님입니다.

After we die, we become a ghost. Most of us, the overwhelming majority of us will become a ghost. You suffer hunger, you suffer thirst. Among other miseries. That’s the process most of us will go through. Most of us have to go through in order to be assigned to the next body. It’s called reincarnation.

우리가 죽으면 어떻게 됩니까? 대부분의 사람들, 압도적으로 대다수 사람들이 죽은 뒤에는 아귀가 됩니다. 배고픔에 시달리고, 목마름에 시달리며, 여러 가지 고통을 겪습니다. 이것이 대부분의 사람들이 거쳐야 할 과정입니다. 다음 몸을 받기 전에 그런 과정을 거쳐야 합니다. 그것을 윤회라고 합니다.

Scary thing about reincarnation is that most people aren’t aware of it. You are so preoccupied with current life. We are so preoccupied with making ends meet, with saving money to buy that nice car, nice house, going on to Europe for vacation or work if you will.

윤회의 무서운 부분은 대부분 사람들이 윤회에 대해서 알지 못한다는 데 있습니다. 우리는 지금의 삶에 너무 몰두해 있습니다. 생계를 이어가고, 돈을 모아 좋은 차를 사고 좋은 집을 마련하려 하고, 유럽으로 휴가를 가거나 일하러 가는 데에만 마음을 씁니다.

You don’t realize that eventually we all have to die. You can’t avoid it. inescapable. Even the Buddha had to die. The scary thing about death is that after you die, chances are that you get things a lot worse for you.

결국 우리 모두는 죽어야 한다는 사실을 깨닫지 못합니다. 그것은 피할 수 없습니다. 누구도 벗어날 수 없는 일입니다. 부처님께서도 열반에 드셨습니다. 죽음이 무서운 이유는, 죽은 뒤에 상황이 지금보다 훨씬 더 나빠질 가능성이 크기 때문입니다.

You will fall, fall to 3 lower realms. Either become, go to animal realm, Or you become a hungry ghost or you go to hells. Let me tell you what are those for. For example, for monks like me, for nuns like her, the majority of us after we die, we go to the hells. That’s a fact.

죽은 뒤에는 삼악도 중 하나로 떨어질 것입니다. 축생계로 가던가, 아귀가 되거나, 지옥에 떨어질 수 있습니다. 왜 그런지 말씀드리겠습니다. 예를 들어 저 같은 스님이나 이분 같은 비구니의 경우를 보십시오. 우리 가운데 대부분은 죽은 뒤 지옥에 갑니다. 그게 사실입니다.

I wouldn’t advise you to become a left home person for that reason. The hells, yes. The hells are worst places in this universe. You don’t want to go there. Not even for vacation. Not even for sightseeing because there’s no fun there.

그런 이유로 저는 여러분에게 쉽게 출가하라고 권하지 않습니다. 지옥은 이 세상에서 가장 고통스러운 곳입니다. 여러분은 그곳에 가고 싶지 않을 것입니다. 휴가로도, 구경 삼아서도 가지 마십시오. 그곳에는 즐거운 일이 전혀 없습니다.

But it turns out, you know what, it turns out that most of you, all of you have been to hells already. Would you believe that? You’ve been to the hells. We all have been to the hells. I’ve been to the hells. Each one of you had been to the hells.

그런데 아시나요? 사실 여러분 대부분은, 아니 여러분 모두는 이미 지옥에 다녀온 적이 있습니다. 믿을 수 있나요? 여러분은 지옥에 갔던 적이 있습니다. 우리 모두 지옥에 다녀온 적이 있습니다. 저도 지옥에 갔던 적이 있습니다. 여기 있는 여러분 한 사람 한 사람 모두 지옥을 겪어 본 적이 있습니다.

You forgot about it. That’s a nice thing about reincarnation. Usually for most of us, we are born again and get new body, we forgot about what happened. Especially, it’s just like when you are alive right now, when something bad happens to you, don’t you want to forget it? You don’t want to think about it, do you?

그런데 그걸 잊어버렸습니다. 그것이 윤회의 한 특징입니다. 대부분의 경우 우리는 다시 태어나 새로운 몸을 받으면, 이전에 무슨 일이 있었는지 잊어버립니다. 지금 살아 있을 때도 마찬가지 아닙니까? 나쁜 일이 생기면 잊고 싶지 않나요? 다시 떠올리고 싶지 않잖아요.

See? See? Ask Marina. You remember you had been to the hells? Of course not. Alright? Why is that? It’s because of the nature of reincarnation. We cycle through the wheel of reincarnation, lifetime after lifetime. The process of revolving in the wheel is that usually after you get a human body, you fall.

알았나요? 알았죠? 마리나에게 물어보십시오. 당신이 지옥에 갔던 것을 기억합니까? 물론 아닙니다. 그렇지요? 왜일까요? 그것이 윤회의 본성이기 때문입니다. 우리는 생을 거듭하며 윤회의 바퀴를 돌고 있습니다. 그 바퀴를 도는 과정에서, 대개는 인간 몸을 한 번 받고 나면 다시 아래로 떨어집니다.

That’s what the Buddha said exactly. That’s what he said mankind is like a bunch of kids, so preoccupied with playing inside of burning house. We are dying slowly bit by bit everyday. Death is waiting. Nothing you can do about it. It’s waiting. It’s a matter of time.

그것이 바로 부처님께서 정확히 말씀하신 바입니다. 인류는 불타는 집 안에서 노는 아이들과 같다고 하셨습니다. 우리는 매일 조금씩 죽어가고 있습니다. 죽음은 기다리고 있습니다. 무엇을 하든 막을 수 없는 일입니다. 그저 시간 문제일 뿐입니다.

You can deny it but eventually we all have to die. So what do we do? The human existence, mankind’s knowledge, we know so little about death, don’t we? What happens after death? That’s why we choose to ignore death, we choose, we are scared. We don’t dare to look at it.

(그런 사실을) 부정해볼 수는 있겠지만, 결국 우리 모두는 죽어야 합니다. 그렇다면 우리는 무엇을 해야 할까요? 인간 존재에 대해, 죽음에 대해 우리는 얼마나 알고 있습니까? 거의 알지 못합니다. 죽은 뒤에 무슨 일이 일어나는지 잘 모릅니다. 그래서 죽음을 외면하는 것입니다. 두렵기 때문에 감히 들여다보지 못합니다.

So this death thing here is hanging over our head. That’s why the Buddha said it’s terrible. How can you be so oblivious to this imminent danger. You think that 30 years, 50 years are long time? No it isn’t.

죽음이라는 것은 늘 우리 머리 위에 드리워져 있습니다. 그래서 부처님께서는 그것이 무서운 일이라고 하신 것입니다. 이렇게 임박한 위험을 어떻게 그토록 모른 척할 수 있느냐고 하셨습니다. 30년, 50년이 길다고 생각하나요? 아닙니다.

Because when you fall, let’s say to the hells. Like in the future, I’m likely to go there myself. Remember? When you go to the hells, you’ll be there and the hells are for you to get tortured and punished for your bad deeds. You get punished for your past mischief, evil deeds. That’s what it’s for. It’s not for vacation. It’s for torture, ok?

예를 들어, 우리가 지옥에 떨어진다고 합시다. 앞으로 저 역시 그곳에 갈 가능성이 큽니다. 기억하십시오. 지옥에 가면, 그곳은 고문과 형벌을 받는 곳입니다. 과거에 지은 잘못과 악업에 대한 과보를 받는 곳입니다. 그곳은 휴가를 보내는 곳이 아니라, 고문을 겪는 곳입니다.

Another characteristic of the hells is that once you fall to the hells, you will be there for million and billions of years. So you think that to spend our efforts to earn a good living right now, process of making a living in this world will create, we do bad things. We steal.

지옥의 또 다른 특징은, 한 번 떨어지면 수백만 년, 수십억 년을 그곳에서 지내게 된다는 것입니다. 그런데 우리는 지금 이 세상에서 잘살기 위해 애쓰는 과정에서 여러 가지 나쁜 일을 저지릅니다. 도둑질도 합니다.

Yes, ma’am. 1 lifetime in the hells is about billions of years. 1 lifetime. Usually you go through billions of lifetime in hells before you can get out. Human years, yes. does it help?

네, 맞아요. 지옥에서 한 생은 수십억 년에 해당합니다. 한 생이 그렇습니다. 그리고 보통은 수십억 생을 지옥에서 보내야 벗어날 수 있습니다. 인간의 시간으로 말하는 것입니다. 도움이 됐나요?

This is what the Buddha taught. I didn’t make the rules. What happened is that you go to 1 type of hell for 1 lifetime. After your time is up, then you move on to your next hell for you to be tortured for next group of bad deeds. It’s not pleasant, trust me.

이것은 부처님께서 가르치신 내용입니다. 제가 만든 규칙이 아닙니다.

어떤 한 종류의 지옥에 들어가 그곳에서 한 생을 보내게 됩니다. 그 시간이 끝나면 또 다른 지옥으로 옮겨져, 다음에 지은 악업에 대한 과보를 받습니다. 결코 유쾌한 일이 아닙니다. 제 말을 믿으십시오.

I want you to think about it. I don’t feel like take all of joy of my existence. Any other questions? Yes. [audience: In the hells, can we reborn again?] Yes. What happened is that what you call soul right now is dwelling in your current human body. That soul migrates next body. Next body happens to be a hell being down there. You live there for long long time to be tortured.

한번 잘 생각해 보시기 바랍니다. 이런 말을 하는 것은 여러분으로부터 삶의 즐거움을 괜히 빼앗고 싶어서 그러는 것은 아닙니다. 다른 질문 있습니까? 네.

[청중: 지옥에 가면 왕생할 수 있나요?]

네. 어떻게 되느냐 하면, 지금 여러분이 영혼이라고 부르는 것이 여러분이 가진 현재의 인간 몸에 머물고 있습니다. 그 영혼이 다음 몸으로 옮겨 갑니다. 그 다음 몸이 저 아래쪽 지옥의 중생 몸일 수도 있습니다. 그러면 그곳에서 아주 오랜 세월 고통을 받으며 지내게 됩니다.

Never heard of it before? It’s very bad, trust me. It’s scary. Because the reason you go to the hells is because you hurt others. You harm others. You inflict pain on others. From the law of cause and effect, ok, because you did evil deeds, created seeds for you to be tortured and to get retribution in future lives. Eventually you get to the hells. That’s what all these things come together and make you suffer and receive torture.

이런 이야기 못 들어보셨나요? 아주 끔찍합니다. 제 말을 믿으십시오. 정말 무섭습니다. 사람이 지옥에 가는 이유는 다른 사람을 해쳤기 때문입니다. 다른 이에게 고통을 주고 괴롭게 했기 때문입니다. 인과의 법칙에 따르면, 그런 악한 행위를 하면 미래에 고통을 받고 과보를 받게 되는 씨앗을 스스로 심는 것입니다. 그리고 결국 지옥에 떨어지게 됩니다. 그래서 그런 것들이 모두 모여, 결국 고통을 겪고 형벌을 받게 되는 것입니다.

Just like here, hells on earth is prisons. If you break the laws, they catch you, put in prison, you see. That’s a similar kind of system. Except that the hells are a lot worse than prisons. A lot worse. Yes. What is the question again?

여기 세상에도 지옥과 비슷한 곳이 있습니다. 바로 감옥입니다. 법을 어기면 잡혀서 감옥에 가게 됩니다. 그런 점에서는 비슷한 제도라고 볼 수 있습니다. 하지만 지옥은 감옥보다 훨씬 더 고통스러운 곳입니다. 훨씬 더 심합니다. 네. 다시 질문이 뭐라고요?

[Shana:if you are born in hells, that’s only thing you know because you already forgot it, right? So that’s only thing you know is the suffering. How do you know, it’s suffering because you don’t know anything else]

You have a body when you get pinched, don’t you have a pain? Ok. You do have a pain.

[샤나: 지옥에 태어나면 이전 것은 다 잊어버리니까, 결국 아는 것은 그 고통뿐이잖아요. 그런데 (고통 말고) 다른 것을 전혀 모른다면 그것이 고통이라는 걸 어떻게 알 수 있나요?]

몸이 있으면 꼬집혔을 때 아프지 않습니까? 그렇습니다. 아픔을 느끼게 됩니다.

What happens is this, the body you have in hells, you have body and torture like over here, they cut off, you have a cut, it hurts. Same thing in the hells. They actually are tortured. Yes.

어떻게 되느냐 하면 이렇습니다. 지옥에서도 몸이 있습니다. 그리고 그 몸으로 고통을 받습니다. 여기서도 몸을 베이면 아프지 않습니까? 상처가 나면 아픕니다. 지옥에서도 마찬가지입니다. 실제로 고문을 당하며 고통을 겪습니다. 네.

[audience: Like demon or spiritual beings, or you are already human body, we are basically suffering and not aware of suffering. They don’t know it’s suffering. Hell beings are suffering, actually they don’t know it’s suffering. Because only thing they know]

[청중: 마귀나 영적인 존재처럼, 혹은 인간으로 태어나서도 우리는 사실 고통 속에 있지만 그것을 자각하지 못하잖아요. 지옥 중생도 고통을 겪지만 그것이 고통이라는 것을 모르는 것 아닙니까? 왜냐하면 그들이 아는 것은 그것뿐이니까요.]

It is, you do know suffering. You don’t like it. So your mind. Let me give you this analogy for you.

아닙니다. 고통은 분명히 압니다. 그리고 그것을 좋아하지 않습니다. 당신의 마음이요... 이해하기 쉽도록 하나 비유를 들어 보겠습니다.

The nature of hells’ existence is that you go there to experience pain. That’s all you do. Here, as human you are more blessed. In a human realm, it’s different because you are more blessed. That’s why sometimes you have pain, and sometimes you have pleasure.

지옥의 존재 방식은 그곳에 가서 고통을 겪는 것입니다. 그것이 전부입니다. 하지만 인간으로 태어난 우리는 좀 더 복이 있습니다. 인간 세계는 다릅니다. 복이 있어서 때로는 고통을 겪기도 하지만, 때로는 즐거움도 누립니다.

You look at your existence, sometimes you have more pain than pleasure. Think about it. Then pleasure only last for very short, compare to pain you have to go through. Work 8 hours a day. 10 hours a day, most of us. You see that. Not Mireya. Mireya is not. She’s not working.

자신의 삶을 한번 돌아보십시오. 때로는 즐거움보다 고통이 더 많지 않습니까? 생각해 보십시오. 그리고 즐거움은 아주 잠깐뿐입니다. 우리가 겪는 고통에 비하면 매우 짧습니다. 대부분의 사람들은 하루 8시간, 어떤 사람들은 10시간씩 일합니다. 그렇지요?

미레야는 아닙니다. 미레야는 일하지 않습니다.

So far so good? Yes, sir. You have a question. [the deeds we create in this lifetime] Yes. [The intention that behind ? in terms of pains and suffering , evil deeds. Does that transfer into the hells based upon ? that construct of your intention and ? the hells ] Very good. Very good. Excellent.

지금까지 이해했나요? 네, 선생님. 질문이 있으시군요.

[청중: (잘 안 들림) 우리가 이생에서 짓는 행위들 말입니다. 고통과 악업과 관련해서, 그 행위 뒤에 있는 의도가 지옥에 가는 데 영향을 줍니까? 그 의도가 지옥이라는 결과를 만들어 내는 것입니까?]

아주 좋습니다. 아주 좋은 질문입니다. 훌륭합니다.

[And then coming to realize that is construct, does that or ultimately ?]

[청중: 그런 다음, 어떻게 구성되었는지... 아니면 궁극적으로..(잘 안들림)]

We come to that. Very sharp, very very smart question. Let me give you an example to clarify. Let’s say you are into sales. Let’s say sell your mother a car with crack engine. No, I’m kidding.

그 부분은 조금 뒤에 이야기하겠습니다. 아주 날카로운 질문입니다. 정말 매우 예리한 질문입니다. 이해를 돕기 위해 예를 하나 들어 보겠습니다. 예를 들어 당신이 영업을 하는 사람이라고 합시다. 엔진이 고장 난 차를 여러분 어머니에게 파는 겁니다. 아니다, 농담입니다.

Let’s say you lie to people, you cheat people in order for them to buy things from you. For example, it could be me. I say oh, trust me. I say, I’m a monk, donate money to me. Give me money because when you die, I will help you. I can’t help you. So I’m cheating you, I’m stealing from you.

예를 들어 사람들에게 거짓말을 하거나 속여서 물건을 사게 만든다고 합시다. 그게 저라고 해봅시다. 제가 이렇게 말하는 겁니다. “저를 믿으세요. 저는 스님입니다. 저에게 돈을 보시하세요. 돈을 주시면, 당신이 죽었을 때 도와드리겠습니다.” 그런데 예를 들어 사실 도와줄 수 없는 겁니다. 그렇다면 저는 여러분을 속이는 것이고, 여러분의 돈을 빼앗는 것입니다.

I can’t do that. What happens? There’s 1 type of hell that will await me. This kind of hell is hell of hanging hooks. When I go down there, I don’t need to tell about other salesman but you know, it’s a same concept.

제가 할 수 없는 겁니다. 그러면 무슨 일이 생길까요? 저를 기다리는 지옥이 하나 있습니다. 그것은 갈고리 지옥입니다. 그곳에 떨어지게 되면 어떤 일을 겪게 되는지 굳이 다른 영업사원들의 이야기를 할 필요는 없지만, 원리는 같은 것입니다.

When I go there, I’ll be hung by my tongue. I’ll be tortured by hanging by the tongues. I don’t know, it’s ever happen to you before, I don’t remember how it’s like. But I can imagine, it could be very very painful. You hang by it. So it tears your tongue. That’s 1 type of hells.

그곳에 가게 되면 혀에 갈고리가 걸려 매달리게 됩니다. 혀로 매달린 채 고통을 받게 됩니다. 여러분에게 그런 일이 있었는지는 모르겠지만, 저는 그 고통이 어떤지 기억하지 못합니다. 다만 상상해 보면 매우, 매우 아플 것입니다. 혀로 매달려 있게 되니까요. 그러면 혀가 찢어지게 됩니다. 이것이 지옥의 한 모습입니다.

Another type of hells as well also awaits me. This kind of hell, there are 2 mountains that I run away from my current hell. There’s 2 mountains with moving and smashing me in between and crushing me to death. I assure you for my fooling you like that, I should go to about, I should go through about dozen of different hells.

또 다음 지옥도 기다리고 있습니다. 이 지옥에서는 현재의 지옥에서 도망치려고 달려가면, 두 개의 산이 움직이며 가운데에서 저를 짓눌러 버립니다. 그 사이에 끼어 산산이 부서져 죽게 됩니다. 제가 그런 식으로 사람들을 속였다면, 아마도 열두 가지쯤 되는 여러 지옥을 차례로 겪게 될 것입니다.

Ok, does it help? [yes] So you see, each particular type of evil deeds, ok, plants the cause of different type of hells that will awaiting for you when then conditions are ripe for you to undergo retribution. So far so good?

이제 이해가 됩니까? [네] 보셨지요. 각각의 악한 행위는 그에 해당하는 지옥의 원인을 심게 됩니다. 그래서 인연이 무르익으면 그에 맞는 과보를 받게 되는 것입니다. 여기까지 괜찮나요?

You know what, since we’ve been revolving in the wheel for so long, we have so many evil seeds awaiting. So we have plenty of these seeds. You have it, I have it. Is that clear? We all have it. I’m not above it, we are not above it.

우리는 윤회의 바퀴를 아주 오랫동안 돌고 돌았습니다. 그래서 과거에 지은 악업의 씨앗이 많이 쌓여 있습니다. 그런 씨앗들이 아직도 과보를 기다리고 있습니다. 여러분에게도 있고, 저에게도 있습니다. 이해가 되나요? 우리 모두에게 있습니다.

저도 그것에서 예외가 아닙니다. 우리 누구도 그 문제를 넘어선 존재가 아닙니다.

So what’s the difference? That’s what he’s leading to, right? We have all these seeds, what to do? They are awaiting for the right condition for you to fall. It’s just like farming, So when you plant the seeds, you need to water it. You need to add fertilizer. You need the sun, you need to weed. Right? So you need different conditions for that to come to fruition.

그래서 그 차이가 무엇인가요? 지금 그 질문으로 이어지는 것이지요. 우리에게 이렇게 많은 씨앗이 있는데, 그럼 어떻게 해야 합니까? 이 씨앗들은 적절한 조건(연)이 갖추어지기를 기다리고 있습니다. 조건이 갖추어지면 그때 과보가 나타납니다. 농사와 같습니다. 씨앗을 심으면 물을 주고, 거름을 주고, 햇빛도 필요하고, 잡초도 뽑아야 합니다. 그렇지요? 이처럼 씨앗이 열매를 맺기 위해서는 여러 가지 조건이 필요합니다.

Same thing. The seeds we have for the hells need conditions for us to fall. Similarly, the same fashion, you did also many good things. I, too, also did many good things. I remember I used to help an old lady cross the street. That’s a good deed. Or there’s a man who I drove by put a sign, homeless, please help me, need food. So I picked out 1 dollar and give it to him. That’s a good deed.

마찬가지입니다. 우리가 지옥에 떨어지게 하는 씨앗도 조건이 갖추어져야 결과가 나타납니다. 같은 이치로 우리는 많은 좋은 일도 해 왔습니다. 저 역시 그렇습니다. 예전에 길을 건너는 할머니를 도와드린 적이 있습니다. 그것은 선행입니다. 또 길을 지나가다가 어떤 사람이 “노숙자입니다. 도와주세요. 먹을 것이 필요합니다.”라고 적힌 팻말을 들고 있는 것을 보고, 1달러를 꺼내 주었습니다. 그것도 선행입니다.

We also have a lot of good things we did. Right? No one is totally bad. Those good deeds would bring us, help us ascend to a higher realm. So what happened is that when the Buddha brought Buddhism to this world, is not for the expressed purpose of scaring you.

우리는 또한 많은 선한 일도 해 왔습니다. 그렇지요? 완전히 나쁘기만 한 사람은 없습니다. 그런 선행은 우리를 더 높은 법계로 올라가도록 도와줍니다. 부처님께서 사람들을 겁주기 위해서 이 세상에 불교를 가져오신 것은 아닙니다.

The purpose is to give you information to do something about it. Yes, sir. [? The seed is transferred on rebirth, some kinds of way] Since you are interested, I will explain the process of ghost, too that most of you will go through.

그 목적은 이런 사실을 알려 주어 여러분이 이 문제에 대해서 무엇인가 할 수 있게 하려는 것입니다. 네, 질문있나요?

[청중: 그 씨앗이 다시 태어날 때 어떤 방식으로 옮겨지는 건가요?]

관심이 있으시니, 여러분 대부분이 거치게 되는 귀신의 과정에 대해서도 설명해 드리겠습니다.

You are asking about how you get the next body. That’s what you are asking. That process went through before. After you die, you go see a judge, called King Yama, who looks at your past deeds of this past life. He looks at karmas that you create this past life. From based on that, he will decide what body you are gonna get.

지금 질문하신 것은 다음 몸을 어떻게 받게 되느냐 하는 것이지요.

그 과정은 이미 말씀드린 적이 있습니다. 사람이 죽으면 염라대왕을 만나게 됩니다. 그리고 염라대왕은 여러분이 이번 생에서 지은 행위들을 살펴봅니다. 이번 생에서 만든 업을 보고, 그에 따라 다음에 어떤 몸을 받게 될지 결정하게 됩니다.

The King Yama judge, he will look at records and say on 1 column he says, all the bad deeds you created. The other column is the good deeds you created this past life. It takes the balance. He will decide where you are gonna go.

염라대왕은 판관으로서 기록을 살펴봅니다. 한쪽에는 이번 생에서 지은 악한 행위들이 적혀 있고, 다른 한쪽에는 선한 행위들이 적혀 있습니다. 그 두 가지를 저울질해 보고, 그 결과에 따라 여러분이 어디로 가게 될지가 결정됩니다.

For example, that nun’s son, this is very real. Suddenly he got a car accident and coop, died. So what happens right now as based right now, his record right now. So he’s destined to fall. He’s falling to, I can’t tell you. I don’t want to tell you, ok.

예를 들어, 저 비구니 스님의 아들 이야기를 보십시오. 이것은 아주 현실적인 일입니다. 갑자기 교통사고가 나서 갑자기 세상을 떠났습니다. 지금 당장 어떻게 될까요? 지금까지 지은 업에 따라 그의 기록이 판단됩니다. 그에 따라 어디로 가게 될지가 정해집니다. 어디로 떨어지는지는 제가 말씀드리지 않겠습니다. 말하고 싶지 않습니다.

During this phase, this transition phase, 49 days, if the surviving relatives or friends help create good deeds during that period, then it gets added to his record.

[49 day thing?] During that period, you still can help them. It is the phase where we have 7 weeks. 7 times, in order to affect the future of the deceased. You know it turns out the Westerners don’t know about this.

[49일 이야기인가요?] 그 기간 동안에는 아직 도울 수 있습니다. 그 시기는 7주 동안, 즉 일곱 번의 기간이 있어서, 망자의 앞날에 영향을 줄 수 있습니다. 그런데 서양 사람들은 이런 사실을 잘 모릅니다.

What happened is that, for example, most Westerners, you go to Louisiana, you have a funeral, they have a marching band, they have jazz, very sad, in the end, you dance in the street. That does nothing for the deceased. What’s good about that.

예를 들어 보겠습니다. 서양 사람들의 경우, 루이지애나 같은 곳에 가 보면 장례식에서 의장대가 연주하고 재즈 음악이 나오기도 합니다. 처음에는 매우 슬픈 분위기지만, 나중에는 거리에서 춤을 추기도 합니다. 하지만 그런 일은 망자에게 아무런 도움이 되지 않습니다. 그것이 무슨 도움이 되겠습니까?

There’s something magic about 7 times of 7. [audience asking] Yes, it is. So after death, we all have 49 days that can further help decide our future. Our future body. That’s what the Buddha taught.

일곱 번의 일곱, 즉 7×7에는 특별한 의미가 있습니다. [청중 질문(안 들림)] 네, 그렇습니다. 사람이 죽은 뒤에는 49일의 기간이 있어서 그 기간 동안 앞으로의 운명이 더 결정됩니다. 다음에 받을 몸이 그때 정해집니다. 이것이 바로 부처님께서 가르치신 내용입니다.

What happened is that in the same vain, the Westerner, during that period, if they do the wrong thing on behalf of the deceased, it gets added to his record on the negative column. Yeah. It works both way. It’s fair.

마찬가지로 서양 사람들의 경우 그 기간 동안 망자를 위해 잘못된 일을 하면, 그것이 망자의 기록에서 나쁜 쪽 항목에 더해집니다. 네, 양쪽으로 모두 작용합니다. 공평한 이치입니다.

If you do good things, it gets added to positive column, you do bad things, it gets added to negative column. It falls further a lot. It turns out that many Westerners as well many Asians, who don’t know so during that period, let’s say let me relate to Westerners for your sake. So some of you might decide to have a feast and kill a pig in Hawaii to escort this person make sure he have better food.

좋은 일을 하면 기록의 좋은 쪽에 더해지고, 나쁜 일을 하면 나쁜 쪽에 더해집니다. 그러면 더 아래로 떨어지게 될 수도 있습니다. 문제는 많은 서양 사람들뿐 아니라 많은 아시아 사람들도 이런 사실을 모른다는 것입니다.

예를 들어 서양 사람들의 경우를 들어보겠습니다. 어떤 분들은 망자를 위해 파티를 열고, 그 사람이 좋은 음식을 먹게 해 준다는 생각으로 하와이에서 돼지를 잡아 대접하기도 합니다.

Asians, they are even smarter. They burn a lot of paper gold coins. You think that helps? They buy these gold coins made of gold paper to symbolize gold so that they send this gold to the deceased for the future life.

아시아 사람들은 더 영리합니다. 종이로 만든 금전을 많이 태웁니다. 그것이 도움이 된다고 생각하나요? 금을 상징하는 금색 종이로 만든 돈을 사서 태우면, 그것이 망자에게 보내져 다음 생에서 쓰일 것이라고 생각합니다.

The family is Buddhist family. So they went to Cambodian temple and asked them to help the deceased. The young man is very attached to the family. So every night, he would go back and appear in his familiy’s dreams. Every single night he went home to visit his mother. He went home to harass his nephew. He went on like that for weeks.

그 가족은 불교 집안이었습니다. 그래서 캄보디아의 절에 가서 망자를 위해 도와 달라고 부탁했습니다. 그 청년은 가족에 대한 집착이 매우 강했습니다. 그래서 매일 밤 집에 돌아와 가족들의 꿈에 나타났습니다. 매일 밤 어머니의 꿈에 나타나 찾아왔고, 또 조카의 꿈에도 나타나 괴롭히기도 했습니다. 그런 일이 몇 주 동안 계속되었습니다.

One day, he told his mother, I think, he said give the wrong name to the temple. I’m not getting merit and virtue! Is that right, the mother? So that following day, the mother woke up, she called around, she asked her relatives what name you gave to the temple?

어느 날 그는 어머니의 꿈에 나타나 이렇게 말했다고 합니다.

“절에 이름을 잘못 알려 주셨어요. 저는 공덕을 받지 못하고 있어요!”

맞습니까, 어머님? 그래서 다음 날 아침 어머니가 일어나자마자 여기저기 전화하며 친척들에게 물었습니다.

“절에 어떤 이름으로 올렸나요?”

It’s the wrong name. And then she’s my disciple. She came to me and said ok, my nephew, he died, and my family took care of the thing in Cambodia. She said I want you to help him as well. So when she called me and she said, I probably give you new name.

이름이 잘못된 것이었습니다. 그분은 제 제자이기도 합니다. 그래서 저를 찾아와 말했습니다.

“제 조카가 죽었는데, 캄보디아에 있는 가족들이 그 일을 처리하고 있습니다. 그래도 스님께서도 도와주셨으면 합니다.”

그래서 저에게 연락을 하면서 이렇게 말했습니다.

“아마 스님께 새로 이름을 알려 드려야 할 것 같습니다.”

She said one of the temple over there, heard that was wrong name, they were so worried, a few weeks gone by. I laughed, I said big deal. Hey, boy. What are you looking for? I laughed, I said don’t worry, he still goes to him. Doesn’t matter. We do it for that particular individual, he or she will get it. It doesn’t matter. You don’t need to write names.

그쪽(캄보디아) 절 가운데 한 곳에서 이름이 잘못되었다는 것을 듣고는, 그후 몇 주나 지났기 때문에 매우 걱정하고 있었다고 합니다. 저는 웃으면서 말했습니다.

“그게 무슨 큰일입니까? 이봐, 젊은이. 무엇을 그렇게 찾고 있습니까?”

나는 웃으며 이렇게 말했습니다.

“걱정하지 마세요. 결국 아드님에게 다 가게 됩니다. 문제는 없습니다. 우리가 바로 그 사람을 위해 하는 것이기 때문에, 그 사람이 받게 됩니다. 이름을 꼭 적을 필요도 없어요.”

So that tells you the connection between the deceased and surviving relatives is very strong. Sometimes, quite often, they come back into the dreams and ask for help. They come back in the dreams. I heard too often.

그래서 망자와 남아 있는 가족 사이의 인연이 매우 강하다는 것을 알 수 있습니다. 때로는, 아니 꽤 자주, 망자가 꿈에 나타나 도움을 요청하기도 합니다. 꿈속에 다시 나타나는 것입니다. 저는 그런 이야기를 아주 자주 들었습니다.

So one day he came when it was the time of the year, he asked the ? to give him a list of all the deceased under his command.

So they gave him a list. So he wrote all these request to help these deceased. Normally he doesn’t take a nap at lunch time. But that day, he suddenly fell asleep after lunch. He dreamt of 3 people looking at him and said hey listen. You should help us out, too. Why aren’t we included?

그래서 그에게 명단을 주었습니다. 그는 그 명단을 보며 망자들을 도와 달라는 요청을 모두 적었습니다. 그는 평소에는 점심시간에 낮잠을 자지 않는 사람이었는데, 그날은 점심을 먹고 갑자기 잠이 들었습니다. 꿈속에서 세 사람이 나타나 이렇게 말했습니다.

“이봐요, 우리도 좀 도와줘야 하지 않습니까? 왜 우리는 명단에 들어 있지 않습니까?”

So he woke up and he called his the ? he said, listen, the list you gave me is not complete. He said, of course, it’s complete. I don’t mess up. The monk said please, check for me again. I believe it’s incomplete. So he checked, it turned out that 3 more names were missing.

그래서 그는 잠에서 깨어나 그 책임자를 불러 말했습니다.

“명단이 완성본이 아닌데?”

그 사람은 말했습니다. “아닙니다. 완전합니다. 제가 실수했을 리 없습니다.”

그러자 그 스님이 말했습니다. “다시 한번 확인해 주십시오. 명단이 빠진 것 같습니다.”

그래서 다시 확인해 보았더니, 실제로 세 사람이 빠져 있었습니다.

So they gave him 3 more names, he wrote them into that request. It works. Sometimes it’s because they have the blessings, therefore they manifest in your dreams in order to ask you to help. It happens a lot to people. People just don’t realize it.

그래서 그들은 빠진 세 사람의 이름을 더 알려 주었고, 그는 그 이름들을 그 축원문에 함께 적었습니다. 그러니 효과가 있습니다. 때로는 그 망자에게 복이 있기 때문에 꿈에 나타나 도움을 청하기도 합니다. 이런 일은 사람들에게 꽤 자주 일어납니다. 다만 대부분의 사람들은 그것을 알아차리지 못할 뿐입니다.

질문이 없으면 잠깐 휴식 시간을 가져볼까 했는데... [질문: 다시 태어나 새 몸을 받고 이 세상으로 돌아오는 경우, 어떤 게 그 일을 결정합니까? 어떤 업이 작용하나요?] 그런데 왜 다시 이곳에 돌아오고 싶어 합니까? 이 세상에 너무 집착하고 있지 않나요?

By the time you come back, my friend, all your friends are gone. Your mother will be not there anymore. So why would you want to come back? This guy is so creative. Very good.

여러분이 다시 돌아올 때쯤이면, 여러분의 친구들은 이미 다 떠나고 없습니다. 어머니도 더 이상 이 세상에 계시지 않을 것입니다. 그런데 왜 다시 이곳으로 돌아오고 싶을까요? 이분 참 발상이 독특하네요. 아주 좋네요.

The answer to that is you want to come back, you have to plant the causes to come back. It’s that simple. Just as same as, I won’t plant causes to go to the hells. I should plant causes to come back. It’s that simple.

그 질문에 대한 답은 간단합니다. 다시 오고 싶다면, 다시 올 원인을 심어야 합니다. 아주 간단한 이치입니다. 지옥에 가는 원인을 심지 않으려 하듯이, 다시 오고 싶다면 다시 올 원인을 심어야 합니다. 그만큼 단순한 일입니다.

So you want to know what are the seeds, right? What do you need to do. Not always, by the way. I give you an example, by the way. Some people, Steve Jobs, Apple. He died of some kind of form of cancer, right?

그래서 어떤 씨앗을 심어야 하는지 알고 싶다는 것이지요? 무엇을 해야 하는지 말입니다. 그런데 항상 그런 것은 아닙니다. 예를 하나 들어 보겠습니다. 예를 들어 스티브 잡스를 보십시오. 애플의 창립자 말입니다. 어떤 암으로 세상을 떠났지요?

그는 매우 부유한 사람이었고 많은 사람들의 존경을 받았습니다. 인도에도 가고, 아쉬람에 가서 명상도 했습니다. 좋은 일도 많이 했고, 나쁜 일도 많이 했습니다. 그가 결국 어디로 갔는지 아십니까? 다시 인간 세계로 돌아왔습니다.

No only just any man, he came back as very creative man. So I can’t wait for the next innovation, innovator that he will become. He has a lot of blessings. He’s not a bad man. For you to come back as a man, you created more good than more bad.

단순히 인간으로 다시 태어난 것이 아니라, 매우 창의적인 사람으로 돌아왔습니다. 그래서 앞으로 그가 어떤 혁신가로 나타날지 기대하고 있습니다. 복이 참 많은 사람입니다. 나쁜 사람이 아닙니다. 사람으로 다시 태어났다는 것은, 악한 일보다 선한 일을 더 많이 했다는 뜻입니다.

예를 하나 들어 보겠습니다. 다만 이름은 말하지 않는 것이 좋겠습니다. 괜히 소송을 당하고 싶지는 않으니까요. 이렇게 생각해 봅시다. 제가 지금 제정신이 아니어서 헛소리를 하고 있다고 합시다. 제가 하는 이야기는 전부 말도 안 되는 이야기라고 가정합시다. 그게 괜찮은걸까요?

Ok, you take it at face value. Take it with a grain of salt. So this particular Senator, US Senator in East Coast, his family is very powerful, considered to be dynasty if you will. Family has many Senators in assemblies, Congressman. Even, you know, top dog, as well.

좋습니다. 그냥 있는 그대로 듣되, 너무 그대로 믿지는 말고 참고하는 정도로만 들으십시오. 예를 하나 들어보겠습니다. 미국 동부에 어떤 상원의원이 있습니다. 그 집안은 매우 힘이 센 가문입니다. 말하자면 하나의 정치 가문, 일종의 왕조 같은 집안입니다. 그 가족 가운데는 상원의원도 많고, 하원의원도 많으며, 심지어 아주 높은 자리까지 올라간 사람도 있습니다.

That particular senator passed away of illness. Guess where he’s at now? He went to animal realm. So you think about it now. [Q: So he’s a Teddy bear now?] Very good. So you see, my point is that this human existence is so short. Think about it.

그 상원의원도 병으로 세상을 떠났습니다. 지금 어디에 있을 것 같습니까? 축생도로 갔습니다. 이제 한번 생각해 보십시오. [청중: (농담스러운 목소리) 그럼 지금 테디베어가 된 건가요?] (웃음소리) 아주 좋습니다. 보십시오. 제가 말하려는 요점은 이것입니다. 인간의 삶이라는 것은 매우 짧습니다. 한번 생각해 보십시오.

You spend so much time. He was not a bad man. He did many good things. It’s still not good enough. In the end, you fall. Is it worth it? It’s that easy, easy to fall. So that’s why the Buddha said reincarnation is so dangerous. You have no control. you have zero control.

여러분은 그렇게 많은 시간을 들여서... 그 사람도 나쁜 사람은 아니었습니다. 좋은 일도 많이 했습니다. 하지만 그것만으로는 충분하지 않았습니다. 결국에는 추락하게 됩니다. 그럴 가치가 있습니까? 그만큼 쉽게 추락합니다. 그래서 부처님께서는 윤회가 매우 위험하다고 말씀하신 것입니다. 여러분은 통제권이 없습니다. 전혀 통제할 수 없습니다.

So when they were alive, these 2 particular examples, they were powerful. They breathe fire. They can own you. When they die, they have no control what so ever. That’s why it’s so scary. Not to scare you. In order to remind you to plan for it. Don’t ignore it! If you are overconfident, you deserve, you fail. Questions, or comment?

살아 있을 때는, 방금 말한 두 사례처럼 그 사람들에게 권력이 있었습니다. 막강한 힘을 휘두를 수도 있고, 다른 사람들을 좌지우지할 수도 있었습니다. 하지만 죽고 나면 아무런 통제력도 없습니다. 전혀 없습니다. 그래서 무서운 것입니다. 여러분을 겁주려는 말이 아닙니다. 미리 대비하라는 뜻입니다. 외면하지 마십시오. 괜히 자신만만해하면 결국 실패하게 됩니다. 질문이나 의견 있습니까?

I tell you Buddha life story. So far we talked about a lot of things, you said, oh this master, he just all his imagination. One time, way back then, this is long long time ago. There was a king who had 16,000 wives. This is what the rich kings and rich emperors back then do. Just like Sultan of Brunai, how many wives does he have? I think a few thousand. And a few more concubines, I heard.

부처님의 생애 이야기를 하나 말씀드리겠습니다. 지금까지 여러 가지 이야기를 했는데, 어떤 분들은 “아, 이 스님이 상상으로 이런 말을 하는구나”라고 생각할 수도 있습니다.

아주 오래전 옛날에 한 왕이 있었는데, 그에게는 1만 6천 명의 아내가 있었습니다. 당시 부유한 왕이나 황제들은 그런 식으로 살았습니다. 예를 들어 브루나이의 술탄을 보십시오. 아내가 몇 명인지 아십니까? 아마 몇 천 명쯤 될 것입니다. 게다가 후궁이 더 있었다고 들었습니다.

So it’s quite common thing back then. So he had 16,000 wives and guess what? None of them would give him a son. So his people. He’s very good emperor. They all said to the king. Your highness, you have to give us a son. So he tried and tried. But he couldn’t for some reasons. He had many daughters but no son.

당시에는 그런 일이 꽤 흔했습니다. 그 왕에게는 아내가 1만 6천 명이나 있었지만, 놀랍게도 그 가운데 누구도 아들을 낳지 못했습니다. 그는 꽤 좋은 황제였습니다. 그래서 그 신하와 백성들이 모두 왕에게 말했습니다.

“전하, 우리에게 왕자를 주셔야 합니다.”

그래서 왕은 여러 번 시도했지만, 어떤 이유에서인지 아들을 얻지 못했습니다. 딸은 많이 태어났지만, 아들은 없었습니다.

But his queen is very good woman. She did many charity things. She helped the many people especially the poor and the lonely and the old. She does that her entire life. She maybe wealthy and powerful but she spent entire of her life doing charity work.

하지만 그의 왕비는 매우 훌륭한 사람이었습니다. 평생 많은 자선을 베풀었습니다. 특히 가난한 사람들과 외로운 사람들, 그리고 노인들을 많이 도왔습니다. 왕비는 평생 그렇게 살았습니다. 부유하고 권력 있는 위치에 있었지만, 자신의 삶 대부분을 자선과 선행에 바쳤습니다.

So she said I love my husband dearly. My husband wants a boy, I want to give him a boy. So she said you will have and if you can't have a boy, anyone else is fine. No problem with me. But she also said by all the good deeds my entire life, I have yet to harm a single being on purpose.

그래서 왕비는 말했습니다.

“나는 남편을 깊이 사랑합니다. 남편이 아들을 원하니, 나도 그에게 아들을 주고 싶습니다. 만약 내가 아들을 낳지 못하더라도, 다른 누가 낳아도 괜찮습니다. 전혀 문제 삼지 않겠습니다. 나는 평생 많은 선행을 했고, 지금까지 의도적으로 어떤 생명도 해친 적이 없습니다.”

For that truth, I want to give my husband a son. Guess what? She gave a birth to a son. That was the ultimate joy of the entire empire. Where did this boy come from? This is at that time, that boy happened to be prior life of the Buddha.

“이 말이 진실이라면, 나는 남편에게 아들을 낳게 해 주고 싶습니다.”

어떻게 되었을까요? 왕비는 아들을 낳았습니다. 왕자의 탄생은 온 나라의 큰 기쁨이 되었습니다. 그 아이는 어디에서 온 것일까요?

바로 그때 태어난 그 아이가, 훗날 부처님이 될 분의 전생이었습니다.

This is written in our Sutra. So you cannot claim that I’m making up this story. This is in the Buddhist Sutra, ok. You look for that, you will find this story. Before he was born, came to human realm, he went to the hells. He stayed in the hells all his duration for long long time.

이 이야기는 경전에 기록되어 있습니다. 그러니 제가 지어낸 이야기라고 할 수는 없습니다. 불교 경전에 나오는 내용입니다. 찾아보면 이 이야기를 확인할 수 있습니다. 인간 세상에 태어나기 전에, 그는 지옥에 있었습니다. 아주 오랜 세월 동안 지옥에 머물렀습니다.

And then somehow he made it to the heavens. The heavens of 33. This happened to be same heaven as Catholic heaven. There are some Christians here audience today, I want them to know that we Buddhist also include the Christians as well. Hallelujah. [Audience replies: amen]

그후 어떻게 해서인지 그는 33천에 태어났습니다. 그 33천은 가톨릭에서 말하는 천상과 동일한 곳입니다. 오늘 여기에는 기독교 신자들도 계신 것 같은데, 이걸 알아주셨으면 합니다. 우리 불교에서는 기독교인들을 포용합니다. 할렐루야. [청중: 아멘]

He went to the heavens, the heavens of 33, the Christian heaven is very happy heaven. It’s true. He has very good life and he was nearing his end, he was about to go to another heaven. He was about to die, he was about to go to another heaven. Remember?

그는 천상, 즉 33천에 태어났습니다. 기독교에서 말하는 천상도 매우 즐거운 곳입니다. 그건 사실입니다. 그는 그곳에서 아주 좋은 삶을 살았습니다. 그리고 그 수명이 거의 끝나 가고 있었습니다. 이제 다른 천상로 갈 때가 된 것입니다. 곧 죽어서 다른 천상으로 옮겨 가게 되는 상황이었습니다. 기억하시죠?

And the Chrisitian god, he grabbed the Buddha, the god Buddha, he said listen, down there in human realm, there’s a very good king and very good queen. Good emperor and good empress. I want you to go down there and help them out. I want you to go to the human realm to help them out.

그때 기독교의 신이 당시 천신이었던 부처님을 붙잡고 말했습니다.

“잘 들어라. 인간계에 아주 훌륭한 왕과 왕비가 있다. 훌륭한 황제와 황후다. 네가 그곳으로 내려가 그들을 도와주었으면 한다. 인간계에 가서 그들을 도와주어라.”

He thought that’s good game. So the Buddha said ok. You are my boss, so I listen to you. That’s how he came to the human realm. So you see, he came to human realm, extremely blessed. He doesn’t have to go to human realm because it’s lower. It’s falling for him.

그는 “좋은 일이다”라고 생각했습니다. 그래서 이렇게 답했습니다.

“알겠습니다. 당신이 제 상관이니 따르겠습니다.”

그렇게 해서 (천상 존재였던 그가) 인간계로 내려오게 되었습니다. 보십시오. 그는 인간계에 태어났지만, 사실 큰 복을 지닌 존재였습니다. 인간계는 더 낮은 세계이기 때문에, 그에게는 추락입니다.

But he said it’s ok. I can go. I still have savings. So the king back then by tradition, he called on the fortune tellers. They all said, wonderful, wonderful. We see nothing better than this guy. We see nothing better can happen to him. Everything is ok, emperor. So the emperor was very happy.

하지만 그는 오케이라며 수락했습니다. 아직 저축해놓은 게 있으니까요. 그 당시 왕은 관례에 따라 점쟁이들을 불러들였습니다. 그들은 모두 이렇게 말했습니다.

“아주 좋습니다. 아주 좋습니다. 이 아이보다 더 좋은 징조는 없습니다. 이 아이에게는 더없이 좋은 일이 일어날 것입니다. 전하, 모든 것이 길합니다.”

그래서 황제는 매우 기뻐했습니다.

When he was 1 year old, the king, the emperor put him on his legs. He was passing judgment on 4 people who are doing bad. So he said, the 1 year old prince was watching his father passing judgment of these 4 evil people.

그가 한 살이 되었을 때, 왕은 그 아이를 자신의 무릎 위에 앉혔습니다. 그때 왕은 네 명의 악한 사람들을 재판하고 있었습니다. 한 살 된 왕자는 그 네 사람의 죄를 판결하는 아버지의 모습을 지켜보고 있었습니다.

So for 1 man, life imprisonment. The next guy he said, a thousand beating to the sticks, basically you die by the stick. So it’s capital punishment if you will. The other guy, why? Because these 4 people commited ? crime.

한 사람에게는 종신형을 선고했습니다. 다음 사람에게는 곤장 천 대를 치라고 했습니다. 사실상 몽둥이로 맞아 죽는 형벌이었습니다. 말하자면 사형과 같은 형벌입니다. 다른 사람에게도 형벌을 내렸습니다. 왜냐하면 이 네 사람은 중범죄를 저질렀기 때문입니다.

So the crown prince sat there and his father, oh my god, why doesn’t my father realize that for doing this, he’s going to the hells! I’ve been through it myself. So he was terrified. I’m gonna get out of here. He couldn’t. 1 year old, where are you gonna go?

왕세자는 앉아서 아버지를 바라보며 이렇게 생각했습니다.

“아, 세상에. 아버지는 왜 이런 일을 하면 지옥에 가게 된다는 것을 모르시는 걸까! 나는 직접 겪어 보았는데.”

그래서 왕세자는 몹시 두려워했습니다.

“나는 여기서 떠나야겠다.”

하지만 그럴 수 없었습니다. 겨우 한 살짜리 아이가 어디로 갈 수 있겠습니까?

So he went back. He was so depressed and went back and said, let me go back to, what is that, Credo? Oh my god, being an emperor is so dangerous. What I’m to do? My Chrisitian god didn’t forward me about this. Oh my god, what I’m gonna do?

그래서 그는 돌아가 이렇게 생각했습니다.

“아, 이런. 황제가 되는 일은 이렇게 위험한 일이었구나. 나는 어쩌지?”

그리고 이렇게 탄식했습니다.

“나를 인간 세상에 보내 준 기독교의 신도 이런 일을 미리 알려 주지 않았구나. 아, 이제 어떻게 해야 하지?”

Because he was so blessed, a goddess appeared in his dream and said, don’t worry. I will teach you way out. You play deaf and dumb. Pretend to be an idiot. That’s what the crown prince did in his age 1. He became an idiot.

그는 복이 많았기 때문에 어느 날 꿈에 한 여신이 나타나 말했습니다.

“걱정하지 마라. 내가 빠져나갈 길을 가르쳐 주겠다. 귀머거리이고 벙어리인 척해라. 바보처럼 행동해라.”

그래서 왕세자는 한 살 때부터 그렇게 했습니다. 바보가 되었습니다.

So he wouldn’t speak. He wouldn’t say anything. He wouldn’t watch iphone. He didn’t like the Thomas, chu chu train. He just like this, he doesn’t talk. He doens’t do anything all day. He was very smart. He deliberately chose at his age 1 to behave like an idiot. That’s how blessed he is.

그래서 왕세자는 말을 하지 않았습니다. 아무 말도 하지 않았습니다. 아이폰도 보지 않았고, 토마스 기차 같은 장난감에도 관심을 보이지 않았습니다. 그저 가만히 있을 뿐이었습니다. 말도 하지 않고, 하루 종일 아무것도 하지 않았습니다. 참 똑똑합니다. 한 살 때부터 의도적으로 바보처럼 행동하기로 선택했던 것입니다. 그가 얼마나 큰 복을 지닌 존재였는지를 보여 줍니다.

But you see, the emperor is not stupid. So they try everything. So they starve him. The emperor is very smart. he said his fortune teller told him that his son will be extraordinary man. It’s impossible. He’s playing game with us. It’s not to be.

하지만 황제도 어리석은 사람이 아니었습니다. 그래서 여러 가지 방법을 써 보았습니다. 심지어 왕자를 굶기기까지 했습니다. 황제는 매우 영리했습니다. 그래서 이렇게 말했습니다.

“점술가들이 내 아들이 비범한 사람이 될 것이라고 했다. 그러니 이럴 리가 없다. 우리를 속이고 있는 것이다. 왕자가 우리와 장난치고 있는 게 틀림없다.”

By the emperor’s order, they starve the son. Guess what? The crown prince would not say anything. To the point where he became ?. The emperor father gave up, started feeding him again. And then he said ah, hunger is difficult but thirst is a lot worse! He wouldn’t ask for water. Again, the father gave up.

황제의 명령으로 사람들은 왕자를 굶기기 시작했습니다. 그런데 어떻게 되었을까요? 왕세자는 아무 말도 하지 않았습니다. 거의 죽을 지경이 될 때까지 말하지 않았습니다. 결국 아버지인 황제가 포기하고 다시 먹을 것을 주게 했습니다. 그러자 황제는 이렇게 말했습니다.

“배고픈 것도 힘들지만, 목마른 것은 더 견디기 힘들 것이다.”

그래서 물도 주지 않았습니다. 그런데도 왕세자는 물을 달라고 하지 않았습니다. 결국 아버지는 또다시 포기했습니다.

The emperor tried everything. He brought a lot of boys with him, and gave him a lot of toys. Give him any toys. The crown prince wouldn’t ask for 1. Even go and play for another 1 even. He just sits there and ehhh.

황제는 온갖 방법을 다 써 보았습니다. 많은 또래 아이들을 데려오고, 왕자에게 온갖 장난감을 주었습니다. 무엇이든 가지고 놀 수 있게 했습니다. 하지만 왕세자는 장난감을 하나도 달라고 하지 않았습니다. 다른 아이들이 노는 장난감을 보아도 함께 가서 놀려고 하지 않았습니다. 그저 가만히 앉아 있을 뿐이었습니다.

So they tried after the time and time again, the crown prince grew to be 16 years old. The emperor tried one last time. Guess what? The last try always. [Shana: wife!] Shana, you are too good, too smart.

그래서 여러 번 시도했지만 소용이 없었습니다. 그렇게 시간이 지나 왕세자는 열여섯 살이 되었습니다. 황제는 마지막으로 한번 더 시험해 보기로 했습니다. 어떻게 했을까요? 마지막 방법은 언제나 그렇지요.

[샤나: 아내요!]

샤나, 정말 대단하네요. 너무 똑똑합니다.

He ordered, he passed out edict. All the females in the royal palaces, if you get my son to look at you with aliking way, I will give you life and luxury the rest of your life.

그래서 황제는 명령을 내렸습니다. 궁궐에 있는 모든 여자들에게 칙령을 내린 것입니다.

“내 아들이 너희를 호감을 가진 눈빛으로 보기라도 한다면, 평생 부귀와 호화를 누리게 해 주겠다.”

So they all went and they tried their best. You know. They all tried. In royal palaces, the ladies are nice looking. They are very alluring. But guess what, they are not as nice looking as, let me tell you, goddess up in the heaven. That’s why the crown prince said, ah, I’ve seen this before. So he wouldn’t budge.

그래서 여인들은 모두 나서서 최선을 다했습니다. 궁궐에 있는 여인들은 모두 아름답고 매우 매력적이었습니다. 그런데 어떻게 되었을까요? 그래도 천상의 여신들만큼 아름답지는 않았습니다. 왕세자는 속으로 이렇게 생각했습니다.

“아, 이런 건 이미 본 적이 있다.”

그래서 전혀 흔들리지 않았습니다.

The emperor said, this is it, my son is gotta be stupid. This is it! This escapes me. I mean, anyone who smart at all, has mind at all, cannot be like this! So he said. That’s it. I gave for nothing. I cannot have a handicapped son for crown prince, so I condemn him to death.

황제는 말했습니다.

“이제 알겠다. 내 아들은 정말 바보인 것이 틀림없다. 더 이상 방법이 없다. 아무리 생각해도 이해할 수가 없다. 조금이라도 생각이 있는 사람이라면 이렇게 있을 수는 없다.” 그래서 말하길, “이제 됐다. 더 이상 기대할 것이 없다. 장애가 있는 아들을 왕세자로 둘 수는 없다. 그러니 사형에 처하겠다.”

So his wife came and hug his head. Your highness, when I gave birth to our son, our beloved son, you promised me, you gave me a gift. You said ask for anything. I never asked for anything from you before. I ask for you his life.

그러자 왕비가 달려와 황제의 다리를 붙잡았습니다.

“전하, 제가 우리 아들, 사랑하는 아들을 낳았을 때 전하께서 저에게 선물을 약속하셨습니다. 무엇이든 원하는 것을 말하라고 하셨습니다. 저는 지금까지 전하께 아무것도 부탁한 적이 없습니다. 지금 제가 청하는 것은 단 하나입니다. 우리 아들의 목숨을 살려 주십시오.”

You see, I like you to make him emperor. Emperor said, no! It’s impossible. I can give you anything else with that. But, see, this woman is smart. When you marry to an emperor, you know how to negotiate with him.

“보십시오. 저는 우리 아들을 황제로 만들어 주시길 바랍니다.”

그러자 황제는 “안 된다! 그것은 불가하다. 그것만은 안 된다. 그것 말고는 무엇이든 들어주겠다.”라고 말했습니다. 그런데 보십시오. 이 여인은 매우 영리합니다. 황제와 결혼했을 때는 어떻게 황제와 협상해야 하는지 알는 겁니다.

She said, ok, you don’t want to make him emperor, what about making him emperor for a year? No way, not for a year. So she said, what about a month? So he said, come on. 7 days!

왕비가 말했습니다. “그렇다면 황제로 세우기 어렵다면 1년만이라도 하게 해 주십시오.” 그러자 황제는 “안 된다. 1년도 안 된다.”라고 했습니다. 왕비가 물러서지 않고 “그럼 한 달만이라도 하게 해 주십시오.”라고 하자, 황제가 결국 말했습니다. “그만하시오. 7일이다. 7일만 하게 하겠다.”

So emperor said, ok, because of my love to you. This emperor is smart. He said I would be nice to her. This is my commentary. Because I know a little bit about the emperor. So he said, she gave me a son before. I should be nicer, maybe there’s a second, you know.

그래서 황제가 말했습니다. “좋다. 그대에 대한 내 사랑 때문에 그렇게 하겠다.” 이 황제는 꽤 영리한 사람이었습니다. 그래서 이렇게 말한 것입니다. 이건 제 생각입니다. 제가 황제에 대해서라면 조금 알기 때문입니다. 황제는 속으로 이렇게 생각했을 겁니다.

“이 여인이 전에 나에게 아들을 낳아 주었으니, 내가 좀 더 잘 대해 주는 것이 좋겠다. 어쩌면 둘째가 생길지 모르니까.”

So he said 7 days, that’s all you get. She produced a miracle before. So he agreed to her that let him become an emperor for 7 days. Guess what? When he becomes an emperor, this emperor is smart. Maybe we tempt him after all, you see, because now either that, he’s gonna die.

그래서 황제가 말했습니다. “좋다. 7일이다. 7일뿐이다.”

황후는 예전에 이미 기적을 보여 준 적이 있었습니다. 그래서 황제는 결국 그녀의 청을 받아들여, 왕세자를 7일간 황제로 세우는 것을 허락했습니다. 그런데 어찌 됐나요? 그가 막상 황제가 되자, 황제는 꽤 영리했습니다. 어쩌면 결국 왕세자를 꼬셔볼 수 있을지 모른다고 여겼습니다. 그렇지 않으면 아이는 결국 죽을 테니까요.

So for 7 days, everyday, the crown prince is. [laugh] So the mother would go and see him everyday. Come on! Please, you gotta do something for me because you don’t do anything at all, he’s gonna kill you in 7 days.

그래서 7일 동안 왕세자는 그대로 있었습니다. [마스터 웃음] 어머니는 매일 찾아가 이렇게 말했습니다.

“제발이다. 나를 위해서라도 뭔가 해야 하지 않겠느냐. 이렇게 아무것도 하지 않고 있으면, 7일 뒤에 황제가 너를 죽일 것이다.”

Every single day she comes and see him and beg him and cries. Get on her knees, please, please, I’m your mother, remember? Remember, you owe me. You gotta do something for me. It’s killing me to see you like this.

왕비는 매일 찾아와 아들을 보며 울며 애원했습니다. 무릎까지 꿇고 말했습니다. “제발이다. 나는 네 어머니다. 기억하지 않느냐. 네가 나에게 빚이 있지 않느냐. 나를 위해서라도 뭔가 해야 한다. 이렇게 있는 모습을 보는 것이 너무 괴롭구나.”

What did the crown prince do? So at the end of 7 days, no change. This is how extraordinary this man here is. So the emperor at the end of 7 days, this is it. You got the change, woman, that’s it.

왕세자는 어떻게 했을까요? 7일이 끝날 때까지도 아무런 변화가 없었습니다. 바로 이 사람이 얼마나 비범한지를 보여주는 대목입니다. 그래서 7일이 끝나자 황제가 말했습니다.

“이제 끝이다. 기회를 주었건만 여기까지다.”

He called on the fortune teller and said you! You told me that nothing’s gonna happen to my son. How would you explain this.

황제는 점술가들을 불러 말했습니다.

“내 아들에게는 아무 문제도 없을 것이라고 하지 않았느냐. 그렇다면 이 일을 어떻게 설명할 것이냐?

[Master speaks in Vietnamese to a lady in audience] I am asking this woman here because she has a story to tell me every single time she comes.

[마스터가 청중에 있는 여자분에게 베트남어로 말한다] 이 여자분은 올 때마다 해 줄 이야기가 있어서 제가 (방금) 물어봤습니다.

The fortune teller is very smart. See, the cream of the cream. Your majesty, we knew it wouldn’t work, but you were so happy, we couldn’t have a heart, we couldn’t break your heart! We didn’t have the heart to tell you. That’s what happens when you go see fortune tellers.

점술가는 꽤 영리했습니다. 업계 최고였죠.

“폐하, 잘되지 않을 거란 것을 저희도 잘 알고 있었습니다. 하지만 그때 폐하께서 너무 기뻐하시는 모습을 보고 차마 말씀드릴 수가 없었습니다. 폐하의 마음을 아프게 하고 싶지 않았습니다.”

이게 무당를 찾아가면 흔히 벌어지는 일입니다.

So anyway, so the emperor said, ok, 1 man is dead today is enough, I spare all of you. I will kill my son today. I spare your life in order of my son. So he ordered his driver to bring his son, drive his son to outside of the city and dig a grave. When he’s digging the grave, the crown prince said, oops, it’s not good. I didn’t come here to die. I would waste my life.

어쨌든 황제는 이렇게 말했습니다.

“좋다. 오늘은 한 사람만 죽으면 충분하다. 너희는 모두 살려 주겠다. 대신 오늘 내 아들만 처형하겠다.” 그러면서 마부에게 명령했습니다. 왕세자를 성 밖으로 데려가 무덤을 파라고 했습니다. 마부가 무덤을 파고 있을 때, 왕세자가 문득 생각했습니다.

“이건 좋지 않다. 내가 여기 죽으려고 온 것이 아니다. 이렇게 죽어 버리면 내 삶을 헛되이 낭비하게 된다.”

Think about it, would be a total waste. He said, no, I cannot die. So he stood up and walked over to the driver and tap his head. Hey. You know me? Who are you? He said, I’m busy, come back, don’t bother me. The crown prince said, I’m the crown prince you are trying to bury.

생각해 보십시오. 이렇게 죽는다면 완전히 헛된 일이 되고 맙니다. 왕세자는 “안 된다. 나는 이렇게 죽을 수 없다.”고 생각했습니다. 그래서 자리에서 일어나 마부에게 다가가 머리를 톡 치며 말했습니다.

“이봐. 날 아는가? 자네는 누구인가?”

마부는 무덤을 파면서 말했습니다. “지금 바쁘니 나중에 오시오. 귀찮게 하지 마시오.”

그러자 왕세자가 말했습니다. “내가 누구인지 아느냐? 지금 자네가 묻으려고 하는 바로 그 왕세자다.”

He convinced the chauffeur here that he’s a crown prince and he’s actually normal. He told him the story I put on an act for 16 years. I don’t simply, do not want to be an emperor. Now that my father and my mother gave up on me. I don’t owe them anymore. Now I want to leave the home life.

왕세자는 마부에게 자신이 정말 왕세자이며 사실은 정상이라는 것을 납득시켰습니다. 그리고 이렇게 말했습니다.

“나는 지난 16년 동안 일부러 그런 척을 해 온 것이다. 나는 애초에 황제가 되고 싶지 않았다. 이제 아버지와 어머니도 나를 포기했으니, 더 이상 그들에게 빚진 것이 없다. 이제 나는 집을 떠나 수행자의 길로 가려고 한다.”

So he left. It’s a long story, I’m running out of time. There’s many more details. Basically he left home life and became hermit and cultivator and became very very happy. [laughing] Come on, Shana!

그래서 그는 궁을 떠났습니다. 긴 이야기이지만 시간이 부족하니 여기까지만 하겠습니다. 사실 더 많은 자세한 이야기가 있습니다. 어쨌든 그는 집을 떠나 수행자가 되었고, 산속에서 은둔하며 수행하는 삶을 살게 되었습니다. 그리고 매우 매우 행복해졌습니다. (웃음) 샤나, 이러기야!

Really, really, being a left home person does have a lot of its own benefits. It has a meaning in there. Actually it turns out that I like the story because you see, it give you a broad picture what’s desirable and what’s not desirable for these people who are blessed.

정말로 정말로 출가자의 삶에는 나름의 많은 이로움이 있습니다. 그 안에 담긴 뜻도 있습니다. 사실 제가 이 이야기를 좋아하는 이유는, 복이 있는 사람들에게 무엇이 바람직하고 무엇이 바람직하지 않은지에 대한 큰 그림을 보여주기 때문입니다.

The one who are so greedy for you know, power, money, love all those things, ehh, it’s no big deal. You know, he’s never turned on by that. The people who are blessed, they really are not attached to it at all.

권력이나 돈, 사랑 같은 것에 매우 집착하는 사람들도 있지만, 사실 그런 게 대단한 것이 아닙니다. 왕세자는 그런 것에 전혀 마음이 끌리지 않았습니다. 복이 있는 사람들은 정말로 그런 것에 집착하지 않습니다.

That’s how the Buddha, he went through many iteration like that. His father and mother actually were, they became father and mother when he became Shakyamuni Buddha.

부처님도 그런 과정을 여러 번 거쳐 오셨습니다. 그때의 그 아버지와 어머니는 훗날 부처님께서 석가모니 부처님으로 태어나셨을 때 다시 그의 부모가 되었습니다.

And guess who’s the driver is? Anyone? The driver, by the way, he said if you want to leave home life, I will follow you. The driver followed him. He said, this guy is something else. He outsmarts all of us. He wanted to follow the crown prince in order to learn his wisdom.

그리고 그 마부가 누구였는지 아는 사람? 그 마부는 “왕세자께서 집을 떠나 수행자가 되신다면, 저도 따라가겠습니다.” 라고 말했습니다. 그렇게 왕세자를 따라갔습니다. 마부가 생각하길, “이 사람은 보통 사람이 아니다. 우리 모두보다 훨씬 총명하다.” 그래서 왕세자를 따라가 그의 지혜를 배우고자 했던 것입니다.

Close. Yeah, she’s a Vajra Sutra kind of person. Shariputra. Shariputra. He loved the Buddha because of his wisdom. He loved the Buddha’s wisdom. That’s why he became no.1 of wisdom.

거의 맞았습니다. 네, 이 여자분은 금강경을 좋아하는 분이니까요. 바로 사리불입니다. 사리불, 사리불입니다. 사리불은 부처님의 지혜를 너무나 존경했습니다. 부처님의 지혜를 깊이 흠모했기 때문에, 훗날 지혜 제일이 된 것입니다.

He recognized the boy, 16 years old is far superior than all the empire. So he followed him to learn. So Shariputra keeps on following the Buddha to learn from the Buddha. Any question?

마부는 그 열여섯 살 소년이 온 나라의 그 어떤 사람보다도 훨씬 뛰어나다는 것을 알아보았습니다. 그래서 그를 따라가 배우기로 했습니다. 이렇게 해서 사리불은 계속해서 부처님을 따라다니며 부처님에게서 배우게 되었습니다. 질문 있으신가요?

So you see, the point here is that, another meaning of the story is that when you have wisdom, you realize that you understand something called cause and effect. The Buddha saw that being, living in rich and wealth, in power, you tend to create a lot of karmas. It’s not worth it for him. It’s not worth.

그래서 아셨죠? 여기서 핵심은, 이 이야기의 또 다른 의미는 이렇습니다. 지혜가 생기면 인과라는 것을 이해하게 됩니다. 부처님께서는 부유하고 권력이 있는 삶을 살게 되면 그만큼 많은 업을 짓기 쉽다는 것을 보셨습니다. 그래서 그런 삶은 자신에게 가치 있는 일이 아니었던 것입니다. 그럴 만한 가치가 없었습니다.

That’s why, in conclusion, see, in Buddhism, the 1 thing for the one who are new, the 1 thing the Buddha brought to our, part of his teaching is something called rebirth. Not only, any kind of rebirth. rebirth to the Western Bliss Pure Land. Rebirth out of here. Because this world, if you come back to it, like Steve Jobs, it’s not a good idea. It’s a bad idea, if you ask me. It’s very bad idea. It’s not worth it.

결론적으로 말씀드리면 이렇습니다. 불교에서, 특히 처음 오신 분들이 알아야 할 중요한 가르침 가운데 하나가 바로 윤회와 왕생입니다. 이 가르침은 단순히 아무 곳에 다시 태어나는 것이 아니라 서방 극락정토에 왕생해야 한다는 것을 말합니다. 다시 말해, 이 세계에서 벗어나기 위한 왕생입니다. 왜냐하면 이 세상에 다시 돌아오는 것은 좋은 일이 아니기 때문입니다. 스티브 잡스의 예를 보십시오. 다시 인간 세상에 돌아온다고 해서 그것이 반드시 좋은 일은 아닙니다. 제 생각에는 그다지 좋은 선택이 아닙니다. 그럴 만한 가치가 있는 일도 아닙니다.

If you go to Western Bliss Pure Land, which we are trying to do to this gentleman here, then you got it make. You no longer revolve in the wheel. Remember, he was at the Christian heaven, and it comes to an end like all the good things. They all come to an end.

지금 우리가 이분에게 권하고 있는 것처럼 만약 서방 극락정토에 왕생하게 되면 그때는 제대로 된 길에 들어선 것입니다. 그러면 더 이상 윤회하지 않게 됩니다. 기억하십시오. 아까 이야기했듯이 그는 한때 기독교에서 말하는 천상과 같은 곳에도 있었지만, 그곳도 결국 끝이 있습니다. 이 세상의 좋은 것들이 모두 끝이 있듯이, 그곳도 끝이 있기 때문입니다.

He said, no, it’s too dangerous. Sometimes you make it, you fall, sometime you go up in the heavens, have a good time and you fall down, you suffer miserably for long long time. You come up and you remember and say oh my god, is it worth it? No, it’s not worth it for him.

그는 이렇게 생각했습니다.

“아니다. 이것은 너무 위험하다.”

어떤 때는 위로 올라가 천상에 태어나 잠시 좋은 시간을 보내지만, 또 어떤 때는 다시 떨어져 오랫동안 비참한 고통을 겪게 됩니다. 그러다가 다시 올라와서 생각하게 됩니다. 이게 과연 그럴 만한 가치가 있을까? 그에게는 아니었습니다. 그럴 만한 가치가 없는 일이었습니다.

That’s why the Buddha came to our world and said, come on guys. Get out of reincarnation, go away from this wheel here. Go to the Pure Land, go to any Pure Land! Any Pure Land.

그래서 부처님께서 이 세상에 오셔서 말씀하신 것입니다.

“여러분, 이제 윤회에서 벗어나십시오. 이 바퀴에서 떠나십시오. 정토로 가십시오. 어느 정토든 좋습니다. 정토로 가십시오.”

The universe is made up of, our world is called impure lands and pure lands. So you obtain rebirth to any kind of Pure Land, you will be much better off than going to impure land. The impure land is not for ordinary people.

우주에는 예토와 정토가 있습니다. 우리가 살고 있는 이 세계는 예토에 속합니다. 그래서 어떤 정토이든 그곳에 왕생하게 되면 예토에 태어나는 것보다 훨씬 낫습니다. 예토는 보통 사람들에게 결코 좋은 곳이 아니기 때문입니다.

You go to the Pure Land, in Amitabha’s Pure Land, there’s no illness. No illness at all. There’s no hells. There’s no ghost. There’s no animals. Becasue those 3 realms are realms of suffering. So if you make it there, you only know bliss, happiness, no more suffering.

아미타불의 정토에 왕생하면 그곳에는 병이 없습니다. 병이 전혀 없습니다. 또한 지옥도 없고, 아귀도 없으며, 축생도 없습니다. 왜냐하면 그 세 가지 세계는 모두 고통의 세계이기 때문입니다. 그래서 정토에 가기만 한다면 오직 안락과 행복만 있을 뿐, 더 이상 고통은 없습니다.

Particular, there is one kind of Pure Land. I know these people, these Asians, they know a lot of Pure Lands. I’m gonna ask them they know about this particular Pure Land. This particular Pure Land, when you go there, and you eat rice, very fragrant rice. It’s the most fragrant rice you ever eat. Only rice, no meat, no tofu, no onion, no garlic.

특히 어떤 정토가 하나 있습니다. 여기 계신 아시아 분들은 여러 정토에 대해 많이 알고 있을 것입니다. 그래서 제가 이 특정한 정토에 대해 알고 있는지 한번 물어보고 싶습니다. 그 정토에 가면 쌀밥을 먹게 되는데, 그 밥이 아주 향기롭습니다. 여러분이 지금까지 먹어 본 것 가운데 가장 향기로운 쌀입니다. 그곳에서는 오직 쌀밥만 있습니다. 고기도 없고, 두부도 없고, 파나 마늘 같은 것도 없습니다.

Just rice itself, that’s only thing you eat for meal. These beings are humongous. They are as big as mountains. And after they eat this bowl of rice, this particular rice, you become a 4th stage Arhat.

그곳에서는 그저 쌀밥만 먹습니다. 식사라고 해 봐야 그것뿐입니다. 그곳의 존재들은 몸집이 매우 커서 산처럼 거대합니다. 그리고 그 특별한 쌀밥 한 그릇을 먹고 나면 아라한이 됩니다.

[Shana: how easy!] Yeah, you don’t have to cultivate. You don’t have to come to Lu Mountain and recite the Buddha’s name or listen to the Dharma. You eat 1 meal, you become a 4th stage Arhat, meaning a sage. It’s very hard thing to do here in this world. Extremely hard.

[샤나: “정말 쉽네요!”] 맞습니다. 그곳에서는 수행할 필요도 없습니다. 노산(노산사)에 와서 염불을 하거나 법문을 들을 필요도 없습니다. 그저 한 끼 밥을 먹으면 아라한, 곧 성인의 단계에 이르게 됩니다. 이 세상에서는 매우 어려운 일인데 말입니다. 정말로 극히 어려운 일입니다.

You see, that’s why when you go to the Pure Land, you are much better off. Much easier to cultivate. When you cross your legs, no pain! So anyway, that’s why you should go to the Pure Land.

보십시오. 정토에 가면 훨씬 더 유리합니다. 수행하기도 훨씬 쉽습니다. 그곳에서는 다리를 꼬고 앉아도 아프지도 않습니다. 그래서 여러분 정토에 가셔야 합니다.

That’s the 1 message I sent to you today is that you may not believe what I’m telling you that remember, the 1 lesson I want to take you out of here today, tonight is that reincarnation, if you need to be smart about it and find a way to go to a Pure Land. That’s the best bet, then this life is not in vain. Then you haven’t been coming here in vain.

오늘 제가 여러분께 전하고 싶은 메시지는 단 하나입니다. 제가 하는 말을 지금은 믿지 못할 수도 있습니다. 그래도 오늘 이 자리에서 꼭 하나는 기억하고 가셨으면 합니다. 윤회에 대해 현명하게 생각해야 한다는 것입니다. 그리고 정토로 갈 수 있는 길을 찾아야 합니다. 그것이 가장 최선입니다. 그렇게 할 수 있다면 이 삶도 헛되지 않을 것입니다. 그리고 여러분이 이곳에 와서 법문을 들은 것도 헛된 일이 아니게 될 것입니다.

동양권 불자들은 서방 극락정토에 왕생하기를 발원합니다. 그곳에는 바로 아미타불이 계시기 때문입니다. 저기 보이는 흰색 불상이 바로 아미타 부처님이십니다. 그리고 양옆에 계신 분들은 아미타불을 돕는 두 보살님입니다. 관세음보살과 대세지보살입니다.

Amitabha Buddha his vow, he said if you recite my name 10 times, 1 mind unconfused, when you die, I come and bring you back. You don’t need go through that judge, King Yama, you don’t have to. That’s why many Asians recite his name. That’s why we gather here together to recite the Buddha’s name.

아미타 부처님께서는 서원을 세우셨습니다. “만약 어떤 사람이 내 이름을 일심불난으로 열 번 염불하면 그 사람이 죽을 때 내가 와서 그를 맞아 정토로 데려가겠다.”고 하셨습니다. 그래서 그 사람은 염라왕의 심판을 거칠 필요가 없습니다. 그 과정을 거치지 않아도 됩니다. 이 때문에 많은 아시아 불자들이 아미타불의 명호를 염합니다. 그리고 바로 그 이유로 우리가 이곳에 함께 모여 부처님의 명호를 염하고 있는 것입니다.

It turns out that a lot of people obtain rebirth to his land. That’s why there’s a record called, records of rebirth to the Pure Land, his Pure Land. It’s this thick. All kinds of people, they recite the Buddha’s name and they got obtained rebirth.

실제로 많은 사람들이 아미타불의 정토에 왕생했다고 전해집니다. 그래서 《왕생전》이라는 기록도 있습니다. 그 책이 이렇게 두껍습니다. 그 안에는 여러 이야기가 실려 있습니다. 다양한 신분과 인생을 살던 사람들의 이야기입니다. 부유한 사람도 있고, 베트남의 왕비 같은 사람도 있으며, 일본의 황제도 있습니다. 가난한 여성도 있고, 심지어 백정도 있습니다. 온갖 사람들이 염불해서 왕생한 것입니다.

Our limited experience as well, How do we know those things? Because we know there, when people obtain rebirth to a Pure Land, there’s many many manifestations. For example, this is well documented.

우리가 직접 경험한 것은 매우 제한적입니다. 그렇다면 그런 일들을 우리가 어떻게 알 수 있을까요? 정토에 왕생할 때에는 여러 가지 징조와 현상들이 나타나기 때문입니다. 실제로 그런 사례들이 많이 전해지고 있습니다. 예를 들어, 이런 일들은 잘 기록되어 있습니다.

For example, when a person obtained rebirth to the Pure Land, the room is fragrant. Or the light, the brightness of the room. 1 of the nun we helped to go for rebirth, I announced that she went for rebirth. She didn’t tell me. She didn’t say anything about it.

예를 들어 어떤 사람이 정토에 왕생할 때는 방 안에 향기가 가득 퍼지기도 하고, 방 안이 밝게 빛나기도 합니다. 저희가 왕생을 도와드린 한 비구니 스님이 계셨는데, 제가 공개적으로 그분이 왕생하셨다고 알린 적이 있습니다. 사실 그분이 저에게 따로 말씀하신 것은 아니었습니다. 아무 말도 하지 않으셨습니다.

On the final day, the 49th day, a lot of monks and nuns came to the funeral. So they saw a bright light, going through the funeral home, everyone can see it. Those manifestations are not to show off. They are designed to increase your faith. That’s why the many manifestions like that or people come back into the dreams.

마지막 날, 곧 49재의 마지막 날에 많은 비구, 비구니 스님들이 장례식장에 모였습니다. 그런데 그때 장례식장 안을 가로지르는 밝은 빛을 사람들이 모두 보았습니다. 이러한 징조들은 자랑하려고 나타나는 것이 아닙니다. 사람들의 믿음을 더욱 굳게 하도록 하기 위해 나타나는 것입니다. 그래서 이런 여러 가지 징조가 나타나기도 하고, 어떤 경우에는 돌아가신 분이 꿈에 나타나기도 합니다.

The Asian cultures are full of it. That’s why the Asians really believe in rebirth to the Western Bliss Pure Land. This is the superior aspect, superior contribution to Asian culture. I hope the Asians preserve it for their posterity and I hope you Westerners would take advantage of it. You yourself have your own experience.

아시아 문화에는 이런 이야기들이 매우 많습니다. 그래서 동양인들은 서방 극락정토에 왕생하는 것을 깊이 믿습니다. 이것은 아시아 문화가 지닌 뛰어난 전통이자 중요한 유산이라고 할 수 있습니다. 저는 동양인들이 이 전통을 잘 보존하여 후대에 전해 주기를 바랍니다. 그리고 서양 분들도 이 가르침을 잘 활용하셨으면 합니다. 여러분도 언젠가는 이런 경험을 직접 하게 될 것입니다.

Because I hope if you see the happening to the people you care, then you know it works. Ok, and you will. I assure you there will be many manifestations in this country, you will see.

제가 이렇게 말씀드리는 이유는, 아끼는 사람에게 그런 일이 실제로 일어나는 것을 보게 되면 여러분도 이 법이 정말 작용한다는 것을 아시길 바라기 때문입니다. 나는 확신합니다. 이 나라(미국)에서도 그런 징조들이 많이 나타나는 것을 여러분이 보게 될 것입니다.

The Pure Land Dharma door, the Pure Land school is in the US right now. That’s why there will be a lot records like that in this US from Espanol speaking people. You will see. Because the Pure Land Dharma door is very very simple. You cannot believe unless you have confirmation.

지금 미국에도 정토 법문, 곧 정토종이 있습니다. 그래서 앞으로 이 미국에서도 그런 왕생의 기록들이 많이 나오게 될 것입니다. 특히 스페인어를 사용하는 분들 가운데에서도 그런 사례들이 나타나는 것을 보게 될 것입니다. 정토 법문은 매우 단순한 수행이기 때문입니다. 다만 직접 확인하기 전까지는 좀처럼 믿기 어려울 수도 있습니다.

And this is in memory, in gratitude to my late master, master Xuan Hua. He brought that Dharma door to the US. You don’t have to go very far. Before you have to Vietnam, you have to go to China to ask for help.

이 또한 돌아가신 저의 스승 선화상인께 대한 기억이자 감사의 뜻입니다. 선화상인께서 이 정토 법문을 미국에 전해 주셨기 때문입니다. 이제는 멀리 갈 필요가 없습니다. 예전에는 도움을 청하려면 베트남이나 중국까지 가야 했습니다.

[inaudible question] What he talked about is not about that. He talked about confirmation from his own experience when he was in labor camp. That’s why I ignored it because he related his friends there. So it’s too long story to relate to you.

이분이 말한 것은 그와는 다른 이야기입니다. 그는 자신이 노동수용소에 있을 때 겪은 경험, 곧 자신의 체험을 통해 확인한 것을 말했습니다. 그래서 제가 그 부분은 그냥 넘어가겠습니다. (방금 이분이 말한 것은) 그곳에서 함께 지내던 친구들과 관련된 이야기라서, 여러분께 다 말씀드리기에는 너무 긴 이야기이기 때문입니다.

But for your sake, it’s not about salvation or races. It’s about. Let me put it this way to you, if you don’t believe what you heard tonight, when you die, then you believe. That’s how it works, by the way. Listen carefully.

하지만 여러분을 위해 분명히 말씀드리면, 이것은 구원이나 인종의 문제가 아닙니다. 이렇게 말씀드리겠습니다. 만약 오늘 밤 들은 말을 지금은 믿지 않는다 해도, 죽게 되면 그때는 믿게 될 것입니다. 실제로 그런 식으로 작동합니다. 그러니 잘 들으십시오.

Those who do not believe what I talked about in terms of hells, you may not believe me. You don’t have to believe me. I know, why I keep on talking about things that people have no proof for, people have been badmouthing, this monk is crazy, he keeps on scaring us, he’s a scaremonger. All these things.

제가 지옥에 대해 말한 것을 믿지 않는 분들도 있을 것입니다. 믿지 않아도 괜찮습니다. 왜 증명할 수 없는 이야기들을 계속 하느냐고 생각하실 수도 있습니다. 사람들은 “저 스님은 미쳤다”, “자꾸 겁주려고 한다”, “겁을 주는 사람이다”라고 말하기도 합니다. 그런 말들도 다 알고 있습니다.

The reason I tell you is because even though you don’t believe me right now, when you die, you will find out that what I told you is true. That you become a ghost, you have to go see a judge and you suffer, you are hungry, you are cold. You are scared like hell. It’s so frightening. You don’t know what fear is like yet until you get there.

제가 이런 말을 하는 이유는, 지금은 믿지 않더라도 죽게 되면 제가 한 말이 사실이라는 것을 알게 되기 때문입니다. 그때가 되면 사람은 귀신이 되기도 하고, 심판을 받으러 가야 합니다. 배고프고 춥고, 두려움에 떨게 됩니다. 정말 무섭습니다. 거기에 이르러 봐야 비로소 진짜 두려움이 무엇인지 알게 됩니다.

And then! I assure you, at that point of time, then you say, oops! He was right! This is the nature of my work. And then you fall. That’s what happens. Before you go to the hells, ooops! I knew it. And guess what? Because of that thought, the next time you hear me again, aha! You are right, I believe you. [master laughing]

그리고 제가 장담합니다. 바로 그때가 되면 이렇게 말하게 됩니다.

“이런! 그 사람 말이 맞았네.”

이것이 바로 제가 이런 이야기를 하는 이유입니다. 그런데 그렇게 깨닫는 순간에는 이미 늦습니다. 그러자마자 그대로 추락하게 됩니다. 지옥에 떨어지기 직전에 또 이렇게 생각합니다.

“아차, 내가 이미 알고 있었는데.”

그리고 어떻게 될까요? 바로 그 생각 때문에 다음 생에 다시 이런 법문을 듣게 되면 이렇게 말합니다.

“아, 맞습니다. 이제 믿겠습니다.” (스님 웃음)

I heard it before! It rings a bell here. See, we Buddhists are very long term strategy thinking. You don’t have to believe me right now. You will believe me when you die. I assure you that. And then next time, no more doubts.

“아, 나 이 이야기 전에 들은 적 있는데?” 하고 마음속에서 뭔가 떠오르게 됩니다. 보셨죠? 우리 불자들은 아주 장기적인 관점에서 생각합니다. 지금 당장 제 말을 믿지 않아도 괜찮습니다. 죽게 되면 믿게 될 것입니다. 저는 확신합니다. 그리고 다음에 다시 이런 법문을 듣게 되면, 더 이상 의심하지 않게 됩니다.

Because if you are still in reincarnation wheel, I assure you I will see you again in a few more billion years. [Shana: you are not gonna go to the Pure Land?] It’s not for sure, honey. [Shana: I think you are going] I’m not going. I’m too busy. I don’t have time to go to the Pure Land.

왜냐하면 여러분이 여전히 윤회의 바퀴 속에 있다면, 장담하는데 제가 여러분을 몇십억 년쯤 뒤에 다시 만나게 될 것입니다.

[샤나: 마스터는 정토 안 가세요?]

그건 장담할 수 없지요.

[샤나: 스님은 가시는 줄 알았어요]

난 안 가. 너무 바빠. 정토 갈 시간이 없어.

I will come back and find you. And say, you see, I explain this again. You will say, wow, beautiful lecture, wow! This master, he can speak Dharma! I love the way he speaks Dharma. Why? Because you heard it before.

내가 다시 돌아와 여러분을 찾을 것입니다. 그리고 또 이렇게 말하겠지요. 이봐, 내가 이거 다시 설명하잖아!

그러면 여러분은 이렇게 생각할 겁니다. ‘와, 정말 훌륭한 법이다. 이 스님은 법문을 좀 하시네! 법문하시는 방식이 완전 맘에 들어.’ 왜 그렇겠습니까? 이미 전에 한 번 들은 적이 있기 때문입니다.

That’s why the Buddhas and the monks they keep on coming back. Because it’s long term work. It’s not 1 time. Look at it this way. If you meet a person first time, what are chances you sell something right away. Virtually zero. Right? It takes several meetings. Many many meetings, right?

그래서 부처님과 스님들은 계속해서 다시 돌아오는 것입니다. 이 일은 오랜 시간이 걸리는 일이기 때문입니다. 한 번으로 끝나는 일이 아닙니다. 이렇게 생각해 보십시오. 어떤 사람을 처음 만났을 때 바로 무언가를 팔 가능성이 얼마나 되겠습니까? 거의 없습니다. 그렇지 않습니까? 보통은 여러 번 만나야 합니다. 아주 여러 번 만나야 합니다.

Same thing in Buddhism. Trust me. Very patient. I say, I remember you. Aha, I saw you already. You look familiar. Especially the boy there. You know, he ignores me right now but he hears.

불교에서도 마찬가지입니다. 저를 믿어 보십시오. 우리는 아주 인내심이 많습니다. 제가 이렇게 말하겠지요. “아, 당신 기억합니다. 전에 한 번 본 적이 있네요. 낯이 익습니다.” 특히 저기 있는 저 소년 말입니다. 지금은 저를 무시하는 것처럼 보이지만, 그래도 듣고는 있습니다.

Even the little boy who’s playing right now, it’s going to his ears. When he falls, next time he will say, when you fall, oops! Someone described this to me before. This is why even we encourage people to bring their children to temple.

지금 저기서 놀고 있는 어린아이도 마찬가지입니다. 지금은 놀고 있어도 이 말이 귀에 들어가고 있습니다. 나중에 추락하면서 이렇게 생각하게 될 것입니다.

“아차, 누군가가 전에 이런 이야기를 해 준 적이 있었는데.”

그래서 우리는 사람들에게 아이들을 절에 데리고 오도록 권하는 것입니다.

Even though they are not cautiously aware, they don’t know what’s happening, but their consciousness still registers. It’s still there. The seeds are there. Next time, you know, he hears me, he will be more receptive. Marina, too. I don’t know about these Buddhist things! True or not? I know that! She’s kind of skeptical like her father. She adores her father. That’s why whatever her father thinks, she thinks. Am I correct?
