Thank you for coming to attend Medicine Master Buddha assembly. The Medicine Master Buddha is one of the major Dharmas that Shakyamuni Buddha brought to this world. You notice that the first thing we did, after offering the incense, making offering to the Buddha is we do repentance, we do repentance.

약사불 법회에 와서 참여해주신 여러분, 고맙습니다. 약사부처님은 석가모니 부처님께서 이 세상에 가져오신 주요 법 중 하나입니다. 여러분이 알고 있듯, 우리가 부처님께 향을, 공양을 올린 후에 처음으로 한 것이, 우리는 참회를 했습니다. 우리는 참회를 했습니다.

That’s important because people fail to understand that you need to repent when you cultivate. Why? Because it eradicates a lot of your karmic obstructions that will prevent you from getting what you want. Ok?

This is one of the superiority aspect of Mahayana. Why is that? Today repentance, if you sincerely repented, then you successfully erased a lot of your karmas already. This is what we help for you. You come to the temple, this particular days, in order to eradicate your karmic obstructions. Ok?

이것이 대승의 수승한 특징 중 하나입니다. 왜 그렇습니까? 오늘 참회에서, 여러분이 정성스럽게 참회했다면, 여러분은 이미 수많은 업보를 성공적으로 지웠습니다. 우리가 여러분을 위해 돕는 것입니다. 여러분이 딱 이 날에 여러분의 업장을 소멸하기 위해 절에 옵니다. 오케이?

This is, by the way, if you were to do on your own at home, it’s not gonna be as effective as you were to do like today at temple because you receive help in eradicating obstructions. Ok?

This is first thing you need to do. in order to get benefit from Medicine Master Buddha’s Vow power. You see, Medicine Master Buddha is known as the Buddha who quells disasters and lengthens life. Why is that? Because he has great affinities with living beings of the Saha world. So before he became the Medicine Master Buddha, he made 12 great Vows.

여러분이 약사부처님의 원력으로부터 이로움을 얻기 위해서 여러분이 해야 할 첫 번째 일이 이것입니다. 여러분, 약사부처님은 재앙을 멸하고 수명을 연장해주시는 부처님으로 알려지셨습니다. 왜 그렇습니까? 왜냐하면 약사부처님께선 사바세계의 중생과 큰 인연이 있으시기 때문이십니다. 그래서 그 분께서 약사부처님이 되시기 전에 12대원을 세우셨습니다.

So I thought I would tell you a few stories about Medicine Master Buddha’s, but I feel that maybe it tend to be long one. So maybe we should first start with reminding ourselves, what is that Medicine Master Buddha would do, can do for us if we are sincere.

그래서 난 여러분에게 약사부처님에 관한 얘기 몇 가지를 해주려 생각했습니다. 하지만, 아마 긴 얘기가 될 것 같다고 느꼈습니다. 그래서 약사부처님께서, 만약 우리가 정성스럽다면 우리를 위해 무얼 해주실 수 있는지 상기하는 것으로 시작해야겠습니다.

The first vow he has is that to illuminate, brighten countless realms with his radiance, with his lapis lazuli radiance. And enabling anyone to become a Buddha just like him. Ok? What does it have to deal with you? If the Medicine Master Buddha is shining his light right now from the Eastern Pure land and it is bestowing blessings upon us. So that we have the blessings to become a Buddha. Just like him.

약사부처님께서 세우신 첫 번째 서원은 약사부처님의 유리광으로, 셀 수 없는 법계를 빛으로 비추고 밝게 하는 것입니다. 그리고 누구든 약사부처님처럼 부처가 되게 하는 겁니다. 오케이? 이게 여러분과 무슨 상관입니까? 약사부처님께서는 지금 당장도 동방 정토에서 빛을 발하시고 그게 우리에게 복을 주고 있습니다. 그렇게 해서 우리가 그 분처럼 부처가 되는 복을 가집니다.

The Buddhism is egalitarian. They want us to be just like they are. The Buddhas. Any questions about that.

불교는 평등주의입니다. 부처님들은 우리가 그분들처럼 되길 원하십니다. 부처님들께선 말입니다. 관련 질문 있습니까?

Ok, Number 2. To awaken the mind of sentient beings through his light of lapis lazuli. You see, in Buddhism, his first two vows clearly indicate you what is priority. What’s really important in Buddhism, So he shines his light on you and help you open your wisdom. It lights the dark corners of our mind, we can see more clearly. ok? That’s very important in Buddhism. The reason that you suffer is because you don’t understand, you make the wrong decisions.

오케이, 두 번째. 그 분의 유리광으로 유정의 마음을 일깨웁니다. 여러분, 불교에서, 약사부처님의 처음과 두 번째 서원은 뭐가 우선인지 명확히 제시해줍니다. 불교에서 정말로 중요한 게 뭔지 말입니다. 그래서 약사부처님께서는 우리에게 빛을 발하시여 우리가 지혜를 열도록 돕습니다. 우리 마음의 어두운 구석을 비춰서 우리가 더 명확히 볼 수 있도록 말입니다. 오케이? 그건 불교에서 매우 중요한 일입니다. 여러분이 괴로워하는 이유는 여러분이 이해하지 못하고 잘못된 결정을 하기 때문입니다.

When you create the wrong karmas, then you have to undergo retribution of such karmas. That’s when you suffer. Ok.

여러분이 잘못된 업을 지으면, 여러분은 그런 업의 과보를 겪어야만 합니다. 그럴 때 여러분이 괴로워합니다. 오케이.

Number 3, buy sentient beings whatever material they need, require. Let’s face it. The reason we cultivate, first of all, is that we get something out of cultivation. So practically speaking, we can’t cultivate unless we have things we need materially. He said, if you practice this Medicine Master Buddha Dharma, then you have ample material needs. Ok?

세 번째. 중생이 물질적으로 필요하고 요구하는 것이 무엇이건 사주십니다. 터놓고 말합시다. 여러분이 무엇보다도 수행하는 이유는 여러분이 수행으로부터 무언갈 얻기 때문입니다. 그래서 사실상 우린 물질적으로 필요한 게 없다면 수행할 수 없습니다. 약사부처님께서는, 우리가 약사불법을 수행한다면, 물질적으로 필요한 게 충분히 있을 거다, 라고 말씀하고 계십니다. 오케이?

Number 4, to correct teratical views and inspire beings toward the path of the Bodhisattva. Basically he says that you have certain erroneous beliefs. And the Medicine Master Buddha will help you correct those views, eradicate those views and have the proper sense of direction, help you put on the road to Buddhahood. Ok. Any questions about this. Ok.

네 번째, 무서운 견해를 바로잡고 중생을 고무시켜 보살도로 향하게 합니다. 여러분에게는 어떤 잘못된 믿음들이 있습니다. 그리고 약사부처님께서는 그런 견해들을 바로 잡고, 소멸시키고 바른 방향감을 갖게끔, 여러분이 불과로 가는 길에 오르게끔 도와주실 겁니다. 오케이. 여기 관련 질문 있습니까? 오케이.

You don’t understand how important this is. Because you know, if you have erroneous views then it will bring you, put you in a wrong direction. You know, if you have an erroneous view, if you go into wrong directions, no matter how hard you work, no matter how long you work, you still go on wrong direction. Ok.

여러분은 이게 얼마나 중요한지 이해하지 못합니다. 왜냐하면 여러분에게 잘못된 견해가 있다면 그건 여러분을 잘못된 방향에 들게 됩니다. 여러분, 잘못된 견해가 있다면, 잘못된 방향으로 간다면 얼마나 열심히 노력하건, 얼마나 오래 노력하건 여러분은 여전히 잘못된 방향으로 갑니다. 오케이.

You see, a lot of people ask me. How do I find a good knowing advisor as Mahayana people advocate. The reason we stress in Mahayana the importance of drawing near to good knowing advisor is because good knowing advisors will help correct and remedy your erroneous views that you cannot see yourself. Yes.

여러분, 수많은 사람들이 내게 묻습니다. 대승 사람들이 주창하듯 선지식을 찾으려면 어떻게 하죠? 우리가 대승에서 선지식을 친근히 하는 것의 중요성을 강조하는 이유는 선지식은 여러분 스스로는 볼 수 없는 잘못된 견해를 바로 잡고 치료해주게끔 도와줄 것이기 때문입니다. 네.

(inaudible) 3 erroneous views? You want only three? Ok. (Ten?) Someone will help ? mention, some of erroneous views that you might have or your friends might have. Anyone? There must be twenties today. Yes, (inaudible) What? Greed, hatred, ignorance. We are talking about, he’s talking about more subtle. Views. What you believe to be true. Right. You take it for granted. You don’t question. You, something, you don’t question. You rarely question. Ok.

Yes. The View of self. The View of others, the view of living beings. View of life span. You forgot the forth one, 택스. After three years going Vajra sutra lecture, you still forgot the forth one?

네, 비키. 과학이 모든 답을 해줄 수 있다. 혹은 과학자들은 모든 걸 알고 있다. 네. 아상, 인상, 중생상, 수자상. 택스, 네 번째 걸 잊어먹었군. 금강경 강설 3년이나 하고 있는데 여전히 네 번째를 까먹습니까?

The 4 errorneous view that is repeatedly brought out and tried to squash it in Vajra Sutra is view of the self. The self doesn’t exist. The view of others don’t exist, either. You discriminate between you and others. That’s the wrong view. You and others are one and the same. So where are living beings? (청중 이름 같음) said how come you never told me about this? It’s true. Ok.

금강경에서 반복적으로 나오고 뭉개버리려 하는 네 가지 견해. 자기에 관한 견해입니다. 자기는 존재하지 않습니다. 타인에 관한 견해도 존재하지 않습니다. 여러분은 본인과 남을 분별합니다. 그건 잘못된 견해입니다. 여러분과 타인은 하나이자 똑같습니다. 그러니 중생이 어디있겠습니까? (청중 이름)은 어째서 이런 말을 내게 해주지 않았죠, 라고 합니다. 그렇습니다. 오케이.

You know, the scientific view that is not wrong, is that all of us are basically, let’s say a self within a big organism. We are all the same. We are all the same substance. It’s hard to believe. This is why the Buddha is so wise. Because he sees, he sees so clearly that are all the same. That’s what he said it’s not because of philanthropy or because of stupidity or trying to impress you that I want you to be same as me.

여러분, 우리 모두가 사실 말하자면 거대한 유기체 속에 있는 하나의 자아라는 과학적 견해는 틀리지 않았습니다. 우리는 모두 같습니다. 우리는 모두 같은 체를 지닙니다. 믿기 힘들겠지만 말입니다. 이래서 부처님께서 매우 현명하십니다. 왜냐하면 부처님께서는 매우 선명하게 우리 모두가 똑같다는 것을 보시기 때문입니다. 그래서 부처님께서 너희가 나와 똑같아졌으면 한다, 고 말씀하시는 겁니다. 박애주의 혹은 우치 혹은 여러분에게 인상을 주기 위해 그러시는 게 아닙니다.

Because, why he said, because basically you are the same as me already. You just don’t know about it. That’s all. Nothing extraordinary but by view that I want you to be the same as I am. Because you are the same and don’t realize it. That’s all. It’s just a fact as far as the Buddha’s concern we are all the same. Black or white, old or young, ok. Rich or poor. We are all the same.

왜냐하면, 부처님께서는 사실 너희는 이미 나와 똑같다. 그저 너희가 그걸 모를 뿐이다, 라고 말씀하셨습니다. 그게 답니다. 특별한 게 아니라, 봤더니 너희가 나와 똑같은데 그걸 모르고 있기 때문에 난 너희가 나와 같아지길 원한다, 그게 답니다. 부처님께는 우리가 똑같다는 건 그저 하나의 사실일 뿐입니다. 흑인이건 백인이건 나이 들었건, 젊건, 오케이. 부유하건 가난하건. 우린 모두 똑같습니다.

Yes, Heinz. The Buddhist has so many errorneous views. They have so many erroneous view, no only the non Buddhists. Ok? So we are not picking on a non Buddhist. Ok. That’s a good point. That’s a good point. I’m white. I’m tall. I’m handsome. And she’s short and yellow. You cannot say it’s same. Can we? You can’t. It’s non sense. It’s non sense to say you are the same.

네, 하인츠. 불자들에게는 잘못된 견해들이 아주 많이 있습니다. 불자가 아닌 사람들 뿐만 아니라 그들에게도 잘못된 견해들이 아주 많이 있습니다. 오케이? 그래서 우리는 불자가 아닌 사람들을 비난하는 게 아닙니다. 오케이. 좋은 지적입니다. 좋은 지적입니다. 난 백인이야, 난 키 커. 난 잘생겼어. 저 여잔 짧고 황인이야. 똑같다고 말할 순 없지. 안 그렇습니까? 그럴 수 없습니다. 말도 안 됩니다. 여러분이 같다고 말하는 건 말도 안 됩니다.

You guys no help. 6 years of explaining Mahayana, still don’t get it.

But the substance is still this gold but looks different. But ultimately it’s still gold. That’s what he’s referring to. Ok. You are the same substance. The substance is gold. But you look different. You form gold into a tall man or short woman. But both are still gold by substance. That’s what he’s referring to.

아, 점심 먹으러 갑시다. 이거면 됐습니다. (현지노스님) 현지노스님이 말하길, 여러분이 금이라 해봅시다. 금을 녹여서 다른 모형으로 형성합니다. 하지만 그 체는 여전히 이 금이지만 다르게 보입니다. 하지만 궁극적으론 여전히 금입니다. 그가 그렇게 얘기하고 있습니다. 오케이. 여러분의 체는 같습니다. 체는 금입니다. 하지만 다라는 게 보입니다. 여러분은 금으로 키 큰 남자나 키 작은 여자를 형성합니다. 하지만 둘 다 체는 여전히 금입니다. 그게 그가 얘기하고 있는 겁니다.

It means that it’s something called Buddha nature is of the same for all of us. We all are part of this one thing called Buddha nature. The Buddha nature, by the way, it’s also present in a flowers. Don’t think you are so superior. When I first learn Buddhism, I thought the Buddhism is, I have the Buddha nature, I like it. But come on, rocks can have the Buddha nature. The Buddha nature also manifests as rocks. Ok? Is it clear?

그건 우리 모두에게 똑같은 불성이라 불리는 걸 뜻합니다. 우린 모두 불성이라 부르는 이 한 가지 것의 일부입니다. 그나저나, 불성은 꽃에도 있습니다. 여러분이 아주 뛰어나다고 생각하지 마십시오. 내가 처음 불교를 배울 때, 나는 불교에서, 나한테 불성이 있다니, 좋아, 라고 생각했습니다. 하지만, 보십시오, 돌에도 불성이 있다고 합니다. 불성은 돌로도 나타납니다, 오케이? 알겠습니까?

The substance is the Buddha nature. It’s same throughout the universe. The universe is made of one substance. Within the same substance here, conditions arise. Within this, if you will, much easier thing for you to understand. Imagine a vast empty space. There’s nothing in there. Nothing whatsoever. That’s your Buddha nature. This is 1 to 1 relationship. You equate the Buddha nature scientifically to the vast expanse, the emptiness throughout everywhere in a universe. That’s the Buddha nature.

체는 불성입니다. 우주 전체가 같습니다. 우주는 하나의 체로 이뤄져 있습니다. 여기 그 체 안에서 연이 일어납니다. 이 속에서, 여러분이 이해하기 훨씬 쉽게 말하자면, 광활한 텅 빈 공간을 상상해보십시오. 그 안에 아무것도 없습니다. 전혀 아무것도 없습니다. 그게 여러분의 불성입니다. 그건 1 대 1 관계입니다. 여러분의 불성은 과학적으로 우주 어느 곳에나 있는 광활한 공간, 허공과 같습니다. 그게 불성입니다.

Empty space pervades everywhere in this universe. Am I correct? It’s everywhere. Right? That’s exactly the manifestation of your Buddha nature. It’s right there. Don’t look any further. The empty space inside your tummy, that’s your Buddha nature right there. It’s right there, inside of you already. Ok. Now in this vast expanse of emptiness. And you have this multitude of galaxies and stars, ok? Even though the satellites, there are planets, there are constellations.

허공은 이 우주 어디에나 편재합니다. 맞습니까? 어디에나 있습니다. 네? 그게 정확히 여러분 불성의 나타남입니다. 바로 거기입니다. 어디 더 멀리 보지 마십시오. 여러분 뱃속의 빈 공간, 바로 거기가 여러분의 불성입니다. 바로 거기, 여러분 속에 이미 있습니다. 오케이. 이제 이 공의 광활한 공간 속에, 여러분에게는 이 여러 개의 은하수와 별들, 심지어 위성과 행성, 별자리도 있습니다.

But they also within, contain within this Buddha nature. It’s not outside of your Buddha nature. So if you stand one galaxy, look at the other, yes, I’m different. I’m the milky way. Ok, the other one we don’t know what their names are. zyxy789, ok? Here is Saha world. Over there is Western Bliss Pureland. It’s different. Different world. But, they still within this vast expanse, empty space. It’s not outside of it. Ok.

하지만 그것들은 이 불성 안에, 불성을 담고 있습니다. 그건 여러분 불성의 바깥이 아닙니다. 그러니 여러분이 하나의 은하에 서서, 다른 은하를 바라보면, 네, 난 다릅니다. 난 우리은하입니다. 그리고 다른 은하는 우린 그 이름도 모릅니다. zyxy789라고 합시다, 오케이? 여기는 사바세계이고 저기 너머는 서방 극락 정토입니다. 다릅니다. 다른 세상입니다. 하지만, 그들은 여전히 이 광대한 공간, 허공 속에 있습니다. 그 바깥에 있지 않습니다. 오케이.

So you say, I am American, I am a residence of Saha world. We are all far different from residence of Western Bliss Pureland. Ok? But that’s only because of manifestation of very microscopic view of the entire universe. That’s all. We are still connected to this vast expanse of emptiness. Ok. It’s still presented in all of us.

그래서 여러분이, 난 미국 사람이야, 사바 세계 거주민이야. 우린 서방 극락 정토 거주민들과는 매우 달라, 라고 말합니다. 오케이? 하지만 그건 이 전체 우주의 아주 극미한 견해의 나타남이기 때문입니다. 그게 답니다. 우린 여전히 이 광대한 허공의 공간과 연결되어 있습니다. 오케이. 여전히 우리 모두 속에 있습니다.

You see, so even though you are tall and more handsome than next person. Ok. You are still only part of that big expanse emptiness. That’s your Buddha nature right there. So what happened in Buddhism? The Buddha realized that. He said oh I realized that I am a Buddha and they are Buddhas to be. He said that you will become a Buddha whether you like it or not. 헤헤헤헤. So why do we need to convert you? I ask you.

여러분, 그래서 당신이 옆 사람보다 더 키가 크고 잘생겼지만, 오케이. 여러분은 여전히 큰 광대한 허공의 일부일 뿐입니다. 바로 거기에 여러분의 불성이 있습니다. 그래서 불교에는 무슨 일이 생깁니까? 부처님께서는 그걸 깨달으셨습니다. 부처님께선, 오 나는 내가 부처이고 그들도 부처가 될 거란 걸 깨달았단다, 라고 말씀하셨습니다. 부처님께선 여러분이 좋건 싫건 부처가 될 거라고 말씀하셨습니다. 헤헤헤헤. 그러니 우리가 왜 여러분을 전도할 필요가 있겠습니까? 물어보겠습니다.

I ask you. This is why I tell my students don’t try to convert people. They are gonna become Buddhas whether they like it or not. It’s a matter of time. There’s no need. Similarly this is why, this is why Vajra Sutra. We are gonna explain that this afternoon. This is the advertisement of this afternoon lecture.

내가 여러분에게 묻습니다. 이래서 난 학생들에게 사람들을 전도하려 하지 말라고 하는 겁니다. 그들은 좋건 싫건 부처가 될 겁니다. 시간 문제입니다. 그럴 필요가 없습니다. 이와 비슷하게 이래서 금강경에서 말입니다, 우리가 오후에 거기에 대해 설명할 겁니다. 이건 오늘 오후 강설 광고입니다.

Vajra sutra, it says Bodhisattvas don’t see they are crossing any living beings over at all. Buddha says you are the Buddha. I don’t need to save you. Ok. You save yourself eventually. I speed it up for you. But eventually you become a Buddha just like me. Eventually you’ll turn back to this vast expanse that you belong, that you are part of already.

Where are they? It’s stored within your 8th consciousness. No one can do anything about it. No one can touch it. It’s right here. In your 8th consciousness. It’s right here. It’s your savings. It’s waiting for a chance to manifest. It’s just like, this is equivalent to from a scientific perspective, it’s equivalent to your having money in your bank account waiting for a chance for you to spend. That’s all waiting for a chance for you to spend it.
