Isn't it amazing that it stopped raining so that you can come and attend the PureLand Dharma Assembly?
여러분이 정토 법회에 참여할 수 있도록 비가 그쳤다는 것이 놀랍지 않나요?
You notice that?
여러분은 알아차렸나요?
I don't know about you, if it rains, I will not drive to the temple.
여러분은 어떤지 모르겠지만 비가 온다면, 나 같으면 절에 운전해 가지 않을겁니다.
I'd rather stay in bed and warm and... you know?
나 같으면 침대에 누워서 따뜻하게 있을 거예요.
So that's why I was wondering last night.
그래서 어젯밤에 궁금했었는데,
I said if it doesn't rain at all this morning, I wonder who's going to show up.
만약 오늘 오전 내내 비가 하나도 오지 않을 경우, 누가 나타날지 궁금했습니다.
Okay. Because I know people... the forecast says that it's supposed to rain today.
오케이. 왜냐면 내가 사람들을 아니까요. 예보는 오늘 비가 온다고 했습니다.

Okay? And, it's interesting. It's totally, actually totally a surprise to us.

We didn't realize we'd be able, we'd be invited to so many temples. Even big ones.

It's very unusual because of my very low stature in the Buddhist world.
불교계에서 나의 위치가 아주 낮기 때문에 이건 아주 신기한 일입니다.
Because, in Buddhism,
왜냐하면 불교에서는
unless you are around 40 years, you’ve been a monk for 40 years, no one really takes you seriously.
적어도 법납이 40년 정도는 되야지, 그렇지 않으면 아무도 진지하게 받아들이지 않습니다.
Before that, we are basically flunkies and, and, uh, are still on trial.
그러기 전까지는 우리는 그냥 기본적으로 잔심부름꾼이고, 아직 테스트 중일 뿐입니다.
Alright? so for us to be able to take, be taken seriously is, I don't know how it happened.
그래서 우리를 진지하게 받아들일 수 있다는 건, 그게 어찌 된 영문인지 모르겠습니다.
Maybe, uh, maybe they, uh, ate something wrong or something that day.
어쩌면, 음... 어쩌면 그 사람들이, 그날 뭔가를 잘못 먹었을 수도 있습니다.
Okay? But we be bringing, we bringing our American Chan, our American PureLand over there to share with them.
오케이. 어째든 우리는 미국 선과 미국 정토를 거기에 가져가서 그들과 나눌 겁니다.

My plan was to share with them.
내 계획은 이런 걸 그들과 이야기해보는 것이었습니다.
I want to, actually, we’re even invited to on a cable TV show for half an hour or an hour.
사실은, 우리가 케이블 방송에 30분 또는 1시간 정도 초대받았습니다.
(사실 당시 영화 스님은 케이블방송이 아닌, 불교방송에 초대받았습니다. BBS불교방송은 공중파 방송입니다)
They haven't determined yet how long it's going to be, but at least half an hour to an hour depending on how much materials they get.
그쪽에서 이게 얼마나 길게 진행될지 아직 결정하지 못했지만, 내용을 얼마나 되느냐에 따라서 적어도 30분에서 1시간은 될 겁니다.
So they asked me, for example, the TV station asked me,
그래서 그들이 나에게 물었습니다. 예를 들어 TV방송국에서 물었습니다.
he said, what is he want us to talk about?
스님은 우리가 무슨 이야기를 하길 원하시나요?
Would you like us to, uh, would you like to submit, uh, you know, topics or questions and answer beforehand?

내 대답은
I said that we've been recording, uh, because of Master XianRen,
우리는 현인 스님 덕분에 녹화해왔는데,

Uh, Mistress XianRen's doing.
현인 여사님이 하는 일이에요.
Last three years,
지난 3년간 말입니다.
she arranges for us to go to the TV station and record.
그녀가 우리가 TV 방송국에 가서 녹화하도록 주선합니다.
Practically every other week.
실질적으로 2주에 한번씩입니다.
So, you know, for the last three years, I'm so well trained about getting on TV.
그래서 지난 3년 동안 나는 텔레비전 출연하는 일에 아주 훈련이 잘 되어있습니다.
I just go show up and I just don't,

I don't really do much.

So what have I been doing?

What I do for these recordings, I relate to our Korean TV hosts as well.
내가 이 녹화를 위해 한 알은, 한국의 우리 TV 진행자들과도 관련이 있습니다.
What we like to do is
우리가 하고픈 일은
for them to be comfortable and to prepare materials they're comfortable with.
방송국 사람들이 본인들이 편하게 느껴지고, 본인들에게 불편하지 않은 내용을 준비하는 겁니다.
Because they need to look good to their audience.
왜냐면 그 사람들이 청중에게 좋게 보여야 하기 때문입니다.
And what I do, just like a Vietnamese TV program, I just react often.
그래서 내가 하는 건, 베트남 TV방송처럼, 그냥 자주 호응만 보입니다.
So, that is why our Vietnamese TV program co-host looks very, very nice.
그래서 우리 베트남 TV방송 공동 진행자가 매우 멋지게 보인 겁니다.
Because every week, he's a main person.
왜냐하면 매주 그가 주요 인물이기 때문입니다.
The manager and yet the program is very, very popular.
그 매니저와 프로그램은 아주 아주 인기가 많습니다.
So, what I do, so I told, basically, I said, they should prepare whatever they feel comfortable
그래서 내가 하는 건, 내가 말한 건, 기본적으로 그 사람들이 뭐든 본인들이 편하게 느껴지는 걸 준비해야 한다고 했습니다.
and I will accord, I will react to their nature of the topics, the topic materials.
그리고 나는 그 주제, 내용의 주제의 성격에 따라 순응하고, 반응을 보일 것입니다.
그리고 나는 그들의 본성, 주제, 주제 자료에 따라서 반응할 것이라고 했습니다.
Okay? But, one of the messages we'll be bringing to them

is that we cultivate here in the US, in our temple,

in order to become enlightened. Okay.

We never lose sight of that goal.

Either we become enlightened this lifetime,
우리가 이번 생에서 깨닫게 되던지,
or become enlightened next lifetime.
다음 생에 깨닫게 되던지 말입니다.
How do you become enlightened next lifetime?
다음 생에서 어떻게 깨달음을 얻게 되나요?
The safest route for you to become enlightened next lifetime is to go to the PureLand
다음 생에서 깨달을 수 있는 가장 안전한 경로는 정토에 가는 것입니다.
where you will become a Buddha in one lifetime. That's it. Okay?
거기서 여러분은 한 생안에 부처가 될 수 있습니다. 그겁니다. 알았나요?
So if you don't feel that you can become enlightened this lifetime,
따라서 여러분이 이번 생에 깨달을 수 없다고 느낀다면,
then you have to be wise and smart about it.
이 문제에 대해서 현명하고 똑똑해져야 합니다.
You need to. I advise you to need to do everything in your power to make sure you go to the PureLand.
그럴만한 이유가 있습니다. 나는 여러분이 꼭 정토에 갈 수 있게끔 모든 힘을 동원해서 모든 걸 다해보라고 권합니다.

how do you know that you will become enlightened?

How do you know you're enlightened?
깨달았다는 것은 또 어떻게 아나요?

to get rid of stupidity and ignorance.
우치(愚痴)와 무명(無明)을 없애기 위해서입니다.

Why is it the Buddha used two different terms?
어째서 부처님은 두 가지 용어를 사용했을까요?
What's the difference?

Is it only the Vietnamese are ignorant? And the non-Vietnamese are stupid?

You know, like Vietnamese have the expression, “đồ ngu”
베트남어로 이런 표현이 있습니다, “đồ ngu”
You know what that, that means?
무슨 뜻인지 알아요?
The French word, Asbestos(?), Asbestos, Cochon. Uh, Huh? “đồ ngu”
불어로는 --- (?) “돼지”. “đồ ngu”
So, the, the Vietnamese are very straightforward. They say, Uh, “đồ ngu”, meaning you are so stupid.
그러니까, 베트남어는 아주 직설적입니다. “đồ ngu”라고 하는데, 넌 너무 멍청해라는 의미입니다.
That's what, uh, the parents usually call their children. that's when they talk to their children, “đồ ngu”, No?
보통 부모들이 자기 자식을 그렇게 부릅니다. 애들한테 말할 때 말이죠. “đồ ngu”라고요.
And this is how my father used to talk to me.
그게 우리 아버지가 나한테 말하는 방식이었어요.
Uh, what's the difference between stupidity and ignorance? Seriously.
그런데 우치와 무명은 어떻게 다른가요? 진짜로.
What happened to her? Huh? Thought I went back to Vietnam already.

“항실 큰스님”, 우치와 무명의 차이가 뭔가요?라고 물어볼 수도 있겠죠.

What is ignorance?
그럼 무명은 무엇인가요?
(Ven. XianRen: Uh, ignorance is like, just don't know. I don't know how to tell you.)
(현인 스님: 어, 무명은 그냥 모르는 겁니다. 그 사람한테 뭘 말해줘야할지 모르는거에요)
Stupidity is that you don't listen, refuse to listen to the Good Knowing Advisor.
우치는 말을 안 듣는 것이랍니다. 선지식의 말 듣기를 거부하는 것이라 하빈다.
And ignorance, she says, is what?
무명은, 그녀가 말하길, 뭐라고 했죠?
(Ven. XianRen: You just don't know.)
(현인 스님: 그냥 모르는 겁니다)
You just don’t know.
그냥 모르는 것 뿐이랍니다..
Yes, sir.

부처님이 부처가 되었을 때, “우와! 인생은 정말 행복해” 그랬습니다. 그런 후에 “현통”이를 보고는, “오 마이 갓!” 그런겁니다.

빛이 없다.
What does it mean? No light.
그게 무슨 뜻인가요? 빛이 없다는게.

흠? 흠? 너무 어둡습니다.
When you go home.
여러분이 집에 돌아가는데,

오케이? 밤 시간에, 방으로 걸어가는데,
You can't see anything.
아무것도 볼 수 없습니다.

Is it clear? Ignorant people are not stupid, but they simply cannot see.
이해되나요? 무명한 사람들은 멍청하지는 않지만, 단순히 볼 수가 없는 겁니다.
알겠어요? 무지한 사람들은 멍청하지 않습니다만, 그들은 그냥 볼 수가 없습니다.
What's the difference?
그 차이는 무엇입니까?
What does it mean? It means that,
무슨 뜻일까요? 그 뜻은
if you turn on the lights, they can see right away.
불을 켜면, 그 즉시 볼 수 있다는 것입니다.

Squash ego. So that you cease to be stupid. So that you can listen.
아상을 짓눌러버리십시오. 그래야 멍청한 상태를 멈춥니다. 그래야 들을 수 있습니다.
And after that, then you become ignorant.
오케이? 그런 후에, 여러분은 무명해집니다.
Then, then, you can... it's much easier to teach them.
그제서야 가르치기가 휠씬 더 쉽습니다.

Therein lies the nature of cultivation.
거기에 수행의 본질이 있습니다.
