especially를 주로 쓰는 경우

1) 여러 가지 중 하나만 집어서 특별히 언급하거나 강조할 때

이때는 above all의 느낌까지도 포함

She loves flowers, especially roses.

Chocolate, especially dark chocolate, was his weakness.

  

2) 형용사나 부사 앞에 써서 exceptionally, to a great extent, very much 정도의 의미로 쓰일 때

We were especially happy to see you.

I put the cake especially high.

  

specially를 주로 쓰는 경우

for a special purpose(특별한 목적을 위해) 정도의 의미일 경우

This kitchen was specially designed to make it easy for a disabled person to use.

이 부엌은 장애가 있는 사람들이 쉽게 이용할 수 있도록 특별히(특별한 목적으로) 디자인되었다.

The cake had been specially prepared for the occasion.

그 케이크는 그 행사를 위해 특별히 준비되었다.

  

  

비슷하게 사용되는 경우

그러나 둘 다 particularly(특히)라는 의미를 공유할 때

I made it especially(or specially) for my daughter.

  

그러나 especially에 비해 specially는 때로는 어린아이가 하는 말 같은 느낌까지 들 정도로 편안한 구어체 느낌이 더 남. 

글을 쓸 때는 especially가 더 어울릴 듯하며, Oxoford 사전에 따르면 especially가 더 흔하게 쓰이는 용법이며 specially보다 20배나 더 사용빈도가 높다고 함.
