forbid

to tell someone in a very strong way that they must not do something or that something is not allowed

해서는 안 된다고 혹은 허용되지 않는다고 강력하게 말하다, 즉 금지하다

- His doctor had strictly forbidden him to drink alcohol.

  의사가 그에게 엄격하게 술을 금지시켰다.

  

구어체 영어 혹은 일상적인 영어로는 위의 be forbidden to do보다 아래 be not allowed to do가 더 많이 사용됩니다.

to say that someone must not do or have something, and stop them doing or having it

해서는 안 되거나 가져서는 안 된다고 말하고 행동을 하거나 가지려는 동작을 막다

- Mobile phones are not allowed in school.

  휴대폰은 학교에서 허용되지 않는다.

위의 예문처럼 수동태로 쓰는 경우가 흔하고, 이 경우 be not permitted라고 하면 좀 더 딱딱하고 격식 차린 말입니다.

- Parking is not permitted here after 8 am.

  9시 이후에 주차가 허용되지 않는다.

공식적으로 사람들이 하지 못하도록, 갖지 못하도록 말하다 – 주로 법으로 금지될 때 많이 사용됩니다.

- Parliament decided to ban fox-hunting.

  의회가 여우 사냥을 (법으로) 금지하기로 결정했다.

  

prohibit 

to say officially that an action is illegal and make a law or rule about this

공식적으로 어떤 행동이 불법이라고 하며 법이나 규칙을 만들다

- Selling alcohol to people under 19 is prohibited.

  19세 이하에게 술을 파는 것은 (법으로) 금지된다.
