아이가 갖고 싶다던 타임머신을 구하지 못한 산타

Dear Doyun and Doha,

​안녕! 나는 산타클로스! 지구 반대편에 있는 한국을 방문하기 위해 한창 준비하고 있지!

Santa Claus here, getting ready to zoom across the globe and visit you in Korea!

한국에 있는 산타 친구들이 너희 어린이집과 유치원에 방문해 즐거운 시간을 보냈다고 얘기해 줬단다. 너희 둘을 만나서 정말 즐거웠다고 하던데, 너희도 특별한 시간을 보냈길 바란다.

My Santa friends in Korea told me how much fun they had visiting your daycare and kindergarten. They especially loved meeting both of you, and I hope you enjoyed the special time as well.

​사실 난 연말이 되면 선물과 배송 준비만으로도 너무 바빠서 편지를 쓰는 일이 드물단다. 하지만 도윤이 소원이 너무 특별해서 엘프 도구를 내려놓고 펜을 들 수밖에 없었어! 내가 이렇게 편지를 쓰는 이유는 도윤이가 원하는 선물을 딱 정확히 찾을 수 없었기 때문이야. (도하는 어린이집 산타로부터 원하던 "상어가족" 선물을 받았으니 제외!) 먼저 미안하다는 마음을 전한다.​

Writing letters is quite rare for me at this busy time of year, but Doyun's wish was so unique, I just had to put down my elves' tools and pick up a pen! The reason for this letter is that I couldn't find exactly what Doyun wanted for Christmas (except for Doha, who got the "shark family" from the Korean Santa!). First of all, I want to apologize.

산타의 편지와 선물

​네가 타임머신을 원한다는 얘기를 들었을 때부터 그것을 구하려고 온 세상을 뒤져서 열심히 알아봤단다. 그런데 산타에게도 어쩔 수 없는 게 있다는 걸 새삼 확인했을 뿐이었지. ​그 기계를 사용하는 것은 가짜의 상상 속 이야기에서나 가능하다고 하는구나. 타임머신이 나오는 "Back to the Future"라는 영화나, 내가 준비한 책과 같은 이야기 속에서 말이다. 선물한 책의 작가는 도윤이보다 조금 더 나이가 많은 형이야. 책을 읽으며 ​"도윤이도 자신만의 타임머신 이야기를 만들어보면 어떨까?"​ 하는 생각이 들어 준비했단다. 참, 그리고 말이다! 두 사람을 위한 깜짝 선물도 준비했어! 꼭 도윤이 도하가 같이 즐겨준다면 좋겠다.

Ever since you wished for a time machine, I've been searching high and low. But even Santa has his limits – it turns out that time machines only exist in stories like "Back to the Future" or the book I've prepared for you, Doyun. This book was written by a boy a little older than you, and when I read his story, I thought, "Why not let Doyun create his own time machine adventure?". And guess what? Not only that, but I've also included surprising gifts for both of you! Please share and enjoy them together!

​이번 크리스마스부터는 도윤이가 진짜 타임머신을 연구하고 만들 수 있는 전문가가 되도록 매일 기도하마! 내 기도는 강력해서 근사한 선물이 될 게다! 어쩌면 언젠가 도윤이의 꿈이 그저 과학 소설이 아니라 실제가 될지도 모르잖니! ​​사실 도윤이처럼 이렇게 특이한 선물을 바라면 선물 준비가 너무 어려워서 힘이 들고 당황스럽기도 한데, 또 동시에 설렘도 준단다. 네가 얼마나 특별하고 훌륭하게 자라고 있는지 느껴지거든.

Starting from this Christmas, I'm going to pray every day that you become an expert who can study and even build a real time machine! After all, my prayers are gifts too! Who knows, maybe someday your dream won't be science fiction after all! Honestly, unusual requests like yours make me a little flustered, but also fill me with excitement. I can feel how special and wonderful you are growing up to be.

​도윤이 도하야, 너희의 멋진 성장을 기대한다. 나에게 받은 선물과 사랑이 모두 마음에 든다면 좋겠구나. 이것이 너희에게 행복이 되기를, 그리고 그 행복을 나눠주는 산타 같은 어른으로 자라주기를 바란다.

Doyun & Doha, I Iook forward to seeing how you are growing. I hope you enjoy all the gifts and love you get from me. I hope it brings you happiness and that you grow up to be a Santa-like person who shares that happiness.

아, 그리고 이 편지가 영어로 쓰인 건 괜찮겠지? 내가 아는 유일한 언어거든. 음, 엄마 아빠가 모든 것을 이해하도록 도와줄 수 있을 테니 걱정 말거라.

Oh, by the way, I hope you don't mind that this letter is in English. It's the only language I know. But don't worry, I'm sure Mom and Dad can help you understand everything.
