가끔 예전 노래를 듣다보면 노래가 나왔던 시절의 풍경이 궁금해질 때가 있습니다. 제게 이문세의 노래가 나왔을 때 광화문의 풍경만큼이나 궁금한 곳이 있습니다. 광화문은 요즘 풍경이라도 볼 수 있지만, 아직 한번도 가보지 못한 곳은 정말이지 너무 궁금합니다.
요새는 실리콘밸리 IT 기업들의 창의성이 먼저 떠오르는 샌프란시스코. 지금과 같은 기술도, 컴퓨터 보급도, 하다 못해 스타트업 이라는 단어도 없었을 1960년대의 샌프란시스코는 어땠을까요? 어릴적 우연히 듣게되었던 이 노래 덕에 제게 샌프란시스코는 여유와 낭만이 넘치는 아름다운 도시로 각인이 되었습니다.
당시 이 노래는 히피운동의 찬가로 쓰였다는 말들도 전해지는데요. 그렇게 노랫말 속 꽃은 자유와 평화의 상징이 되어갔다고 합니다.
스콧 맥킨지의 정갈한 보컬을 들을 때 마다 샌프란시스코의 아름다움을 상상하게 됩니다.
