이번 오스카의 주인공이었던 봉준호 감독에 대한 이야기들이 이번주 내내 가득했던 것 같습니다. 그와 동시에 영화제 내에서 보여준 쿠엔틴 타란티노와 봉준호의 서로에 대한 리스펙트도 많은 사람들에게 알려졌습니다. 사실 작년에 본 영화 중 기생충 만큼이나 재밌었던 영화 중 하나가 타란티노의 '원스 어폰 어 타임 인 할리우드' 였기 때문에, 저는 이번 영화제를 참 흥미롭게 볼 수 있었습니다. 폴란스키 가 살인 사건과 히피 문화를 그린 타란티노의 영화 얘기는 다음에 따로 말씀드리고자 합니다.
타란티노의 영화 중 '킬빌' 시리즈나 영상미가 좋은 '헤이트풀8' 그리고 그의 대표작 중 하나인 '저수지의 개들' 등 다양한 영화들을 추천할 수 있겠지만, 그의 영화 중 제가 가장 추천하고 싶은 영화는 바로 '펄프 픽션' 입니다. 헐리우드에 쿠엔틴 타란티노 라는 이름을 제대로 알린 작품이기도 하고, 기존 틀을 깬 서사 구조는 요즘 봐도 신선합니다.
이 영화에 등장하는 음악 중 주인공이 바에서 대화할 때 흘러나오던 익숙한 이 노래는 화면 분위기와 정말 잘 맞아떨어졌다고 생각하는데요. 왠지 이번주에는 그 영화 장면과 노래가 이따금씩 떠오르더군요. 50~60년대 레이찰스와 아레사 프랭클린을 이어가는 70년대 소울의 대표, 알 그린의 노래 입니다.
