영어 학습자들이 읽는 영어책은 일반적으로 아래의 순서로 읽는다.

아이마다 좋아하는 책이 다 다를 수 있다.
우리 아들의 인생 책은 코비 브라이언트의 <The Mamba Mentality:How I Play>라는 책이다.
거짓말 않하고 거의 세달 가량 초등 5학년 시절 매일 밤 잠자기전 읽는 책이었다.
요즘은 Chat GPT를 활용해서 책 추천 리스트는 순식간에 받아 볼 수 있다. 아이의 취향이나 나이, 성별, 영어 실력 수준등에 대한 내용을 주고 책 추천을 해달라고 하면 얼마든지 리스트를 받아볼 수 있다. 그러기 위해서는 일단 부모가 자녀의 관심 분야를 유심히 살펴보는 것이 제일 필요하다.
중3인 아들은 이제 본인이 관심 있는 책을 검색해서 사달라고 리스트를 주는 편이다. 하지만 예전에는 틈틈이 서점에 가거나 도서관에서 이것 저것 골라왔다. 대부분은 읽지 않은 채 반납하기 일쑤였지만 그 중에 한 두권은 읽으니 그걸로 족하다 생각했다. 그렇게 발품을 팔거나 온라인 검색을 조금 해서라도 자녀가 좋아하는 분야의 책을 꼭 알아보는 것이 제일 중요하다. 특히 초등학교 전후의 아이일수록 더욱 그렇다.
그나마 아이의 읽기 능력에 얼추 비슷한 책을 고를 수 있기 위한 방법으로 AR(Accelerated Reading)지수와 Lexile지수가 있다. 왠만한 영어 동화책이나 챕터북은 제목을 치면 그 지수를 확인할 수 있다.
❚EFL 영어 독해 교재 어떻게 활용하면 4 skill 다 키울까?
영어 독해 교재는 우리나라 중고등학생들에게 아카데믹한 영어글에 대한 독해력을 키우는 데 필수 책들이다. 하지만 그것을 그저 문제만 풀고 넘어가기에는 아쉬움이 있다. 학습자 수준에 맞는 책을 읽고 그것을 기반으로 읽기 뿐 아니라 말하기, 듣기, 쓰기 능력도 키우기엔 안성맞춤인 교재이기 때문이다.
다음은 중학생 학습자들에게 실제로 방과후 영어 수업을 할 때 사용한 방식이다.
Step 1. 독해 문제집에 제공되는 MP3 파일을 활용해서 독해하기 전 먼저 듣기를 한 후 Summary의 빈 칸 채우기나 주제 찾는 문제를 먼저 풀기.
Step 2. 글의 종류별 특징 이해하며 글을 찬찬히 읽기
Step 3. 글의 내용을 노트 필기하듯이 간단한 메모, 그림 등을 활용하여 구조화 하기
Step 4. (Step 3의) 구조화한 그림 보고 영어로 말하기
Step 5. 새롭게 배운 새 단어를 최대한 사용하여 요약 글 쓰기
둘째 아들의 경우는 요약 글쓰기는 하기 귀찮아하는 편이라 요약해서 영어로 말하기를 매일 영어 학습의 루틴으로 하고 있다. 각자 자녀의 상황과 의지에 맞게 이런 단계를 밟아서 매일 꾸준히 연습한다면 영어의 4 skill은 물론이고 멀티 리터러시도 강화 될 수 있다. 메시지를 그림이나 도표, 또는 텍스트, 음성으로 표현하는 능력은 점점 더 많이 요구되는 능력이다. 거창하게 들리는 멀티 리터러시지만 키우는 방법은 의외로 일상의 간단한 활동에서 시작된다는 점을 말해주고 싶다. 그리고 무엇보다 그 출발은 바로 읽기에서 시작된다는 점이 중요하다.
우연히 읽게 된 영어 책이 아이의 영어 학습의 소중한 씨앗이 될 수 있다.
그 작은 씨앗은 언젠간 큰 나무로 무럭무럭 커나가 있을 것이다.
그리고 그 씨앗은 타고난 게 아니라,
일상의 매일 어느 순간이든 심겨질 수 있다.
