늦은 밤 레인 할머니의 카톡 문자가 와있다.
"Did C** have her second H** Interview today? We have been praying for her and for the whole process. (2026. 1.24. 오후 10: 57)
딸이 최근 지원한 편입 시험에 2차 면접이 지난 토요일에 있었다. 할머니는 잊지 않고 그날 저녁 문자를 주셨다.
당신의 건강도 좋지 않음에도 불구하고 멀리에 있는 우리 가족의 일까지 챙겨주시니 감사할 따름이다.
이곳은 밤 11시 가까운 시간이지만 미국은 아침 8시이다.
일과가 시작되기 전에 얼른 문자 답장을 드리고 싶었다.
마침 딸이 편입 지원을 한 대학교에 우리는 그날 처음으로 간 거였지만 이미 할머니 내외분은 지난 가을 한국을 방문하셨을 때 지인을 만나러 가신다고 다녀가셨던 곳 이기에 인연이 나름 있는 학교긴하다. 미국인 이신 할머니 내외분에게 더 친근한 학교인 셈이다.
아무튼 얼른 답장을 오류없이 쓰고 싶은 마음에 또 Chat GPT를 활용해서 나의 초안을 수정했다.

That’s exciting! So now you know what the school and the city are like.
Last week, at a H** appreciation lunch, we talked to some of the professors in the ** school. They said be sure to tell C** to look them up. Even if she is just an undergraduate, they would welcome her. (그분들을 찾아가보라고 꼭 말해주라고 말하더라.)
My health is about the same. We are waiting on results from at least two tests, but probably won’t know anything soon.

할머니와의 문자 대화를 하고나면 늘 마음이 따뜻해진다.
멀리서 누군가가 우리를 위해 기도해주고 있다는 사실 만으로도 삶은 훨씬 더 포근해진다.
요즘처럼 힘든 시대를 살아가는 우리가 서로에게 그런 사람이 되어줄 수 있길......
우리 딸에게 할머니께서 기도해주시고 있다는 말을 난 늘 잊지 않고 딸에게 전해준다.
비록 무뚝뚝하고 쉬크한 척하는 MZ 세대인 우리 딸에게도 그 따스함은 식지 않고 고스란히 전달되기 때문이다.
그런 할머니의 진심이 통해서일까?
며칠 전 교회로 향하는 차에서 딸이 난생 처음으로 하나님에 관한 질문을 나에게 했다.
"엄마, 뭐든지 다 하나님 마음대로 되는 거면, 애초에 내가 노력을 할 필요가 없는 게 아닐까?"
저녁 메뉴가 뭔지, 화장품을 샀으니 돈을 줄 수 있는지, 친구를 만나러 갈건데, 용돈을 더 줄 수 있는지 뭐 이런 질문만 하는 딸이 이런 갑작스레 수준급 질문을 해오니 너무 감격스러웠다.
게다가 그 질문은 나 스스로도 해본적이 있는 질문이기에 더 반가웠다.
아마도 딸은 아래 성경구절과 관련해서 생각이 난 모양이다.
"사람의 마음에는 많은 계획이 있어도 오직 여호와의 뜻만이 완전히 서리라.(잠언 19:21)
“There are many devices in a man's heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand.” (Proverbs 19:21 )
딸에게 마태복음 25장 14절~30절 이야기를 간략히 설명해주었다.
하나님은 애초에 우리 모두에게 다른 재능을 주셨어. 그리고 우리에게 자유의지라는 것도 주셨지.
결국 우리는 우리의 재능을 하나님의 뜻을 위해 사용하되, 우리의 자유의지를 가지고 적극적으로 삶을 살아가길 원하시는 것 같아.
우리의 생각, 말, 행동, 판단 모든 부분이 하나님의 뜻과 맞으면 참 좋겠지. 하지만 그건 쉬운 일이 아니야. 그러니 우리는 하나님의 뜻을 알기 위해 성경을 계속 공부해 가며 더 그 뜻에 맞은 삶을 살아가려 노력할 뿐이지. 물론 우리가 엉뚱한 길을 간다하더러도 하나님은 우리와 함께 동행한다는 사실을 잊어서는 안돼. 매 순간 하나님은 우리를 지켜주시고 우리를 인도해주신다는 사실, 그리고 부여받은 재능을 한껏 발휘하며 용기있게 도전하길 바라는 분이라는 사실을 믿고 열심을 하면 돼~
이어서 딸에게 마태복음의 세 하인에 관한 비유를 설명해주었다.

이제 대학교 3학년이 되는 딸이 이제는 제법 이런 비유도 이해하는 것 같아 대견스러웠다.
미국에 데려갈 때는 아무것도 모르던 초등학교 4학년이었는데, 이제 어느덧 이렇게 어른이 되어 하나님 말씀에도 관심을 갖게 되니 너무 감사할 따름이다.
새해에는 우리 딸에게 더 좋은 배움의 장이 허락이 되어 더욱 신실한 어른이 될 수 있는 한 해가 되었으면 좋겠다.
