29. Alphabet (vowels and consonants) 알파벳
한글은 자음이 19개 그리고 모음이 21개로 이루어진 반면, 영어는 자음 21개와 모음 5 개로 단어를 만든다. 영단어는 적어도 한 개 이상의 모음이 포함되어 단어를 이룬다. 처음 영어를 접하는 아이들에게 영어의 알파벳 개수와 자음 그리고 모음의 개념을 통한 음절에 대한 지도 법을 살펴보자.
Q: How many alphabets in English? 영어에서 알파벳은 몇 개지? (in English을 굳이 붙이지 않아도 되나 질문하는 문장의 음률 감을 주기 위해 붙인다.)
A: There are 26 alphabets in English. 26개의 알파벳이 있다.
Q: What are vowels? 모음은 뭐지?
A: a, e, i, o, u, they are vowels. There are 5 vowels. ‘a, e, I, o, u’을 모음이라고 한다. 다섯 개의 모음이 있다.
Q:What are consonants? 자음이 뭐지?
A: Except vowels, all alphabets, they are consonants. 모음을 뺀 모든 알파벳을 자음이라 한다.
b, c , d, f, ….. until z, they are consonants. There are 21 consonants. ‘b, c, d, f...... z’ 이들을 자음이라 한다. 21개의 자음이 있다.

A: A syllable has a single vowel sound and that is pronounced as a unit. 음절은 하나의 단일 모음이 있고 그것에서 하나의 단위로 발음된다.
“dog”; it has one syllable. “dog”; 은 한 음절이다. “pencil”; it has two syllables. pencil”은 두 음절이다.
“umbrella” it has three syllables. “umbrella” 은 세음절이다.
자음과 모음 그리고 음절에 대한 기본 내용을 알고 있어야 향후 진행되는 스펠링 규칙도 영어로 이해하고 설명할 수가 있다.

What are consonants? 한 손으로 컵을 쥐는 듯이 살짝 쥐고 검지와 엄지로 알파벳 C를 만든다.
Except vowels, all alphabets, they are consonants. ‘except’는 양 팔을 서로 교차해서 알파벳 X 모양 만든다.
b, c , d, f, ….. until z, they are consonants. There are 21 consonants.
What is a syllable? 한 손으로 허공에 S자를 그리듯 위에서 아래 그린다.
A syllable has a single vowel sound and that is pronounced as a unit.
v 모양의 손가락으로 두 손가락을 세웠다가 오므린다. ‘that is pronounced ’는 손가락으로 앞을 가리킨 후 입 앞에서 손을 말 듯이 굴려준다.
“dog”; it has one syllable. “pencil”; it has two syllables. 두 손을 앞을 향해 벌려 준후 얼굴 높이로 든 후 손가락 하나만 편다. 연필을 잡고 쓰듯이 제스처를 하고 난 후 손가락 두를 편다.
“umbrella”; it has three syllables. 우산을 쓰듯이 두 손을 허공을 향해 올리고 손가락 세 개를 편다.)
