30. The spelling rule

기본 영어 단어에 시제 또는 단, 복수 개념 때문에 변화를 주어야 하는 경우가 많다. 대부분은 규칙성이 있지만, 단어의 형태에 따라 불규칙한 패턴을 알아야 하는 경우가 종종 있다. 그 불규칙의 형태를 영어로 말해 보는 연습을 지도해보자.
동사를 가지고 현재 진행형을 만들 때 동사 뒤에 ‘~ing’를 붙이는 불규칙의 규칙을 영어로 말해 보자.

A: Rule 1: When the verb finishes with consonant and “ –e”, drop the “-e” and add “~ing”.
Make-> making give-> giving.
동사가 자음과 “ –e” 로 끝나는 경우 “ –e”를 떨어트리고 “~ing”를 붙인다.
Rule 2: When the verb finishes with consonant and “-ie”, drop the “-ie” and add “ying”.
Tie -> tying die -> dying
동사가 자음과 “ –ie” 로 끝나는 경우 “ –ie”를 떨어트리고 “y and~ing”를 붙인다.
Rule 3: When the one-syllable verb finishes with one vowel and one consonant, double the consonant and add “~ing”.
Hug -> hugging cut ->cutting
일 음절의 동사가 하나의 모음과 하나의 자음으로 끝나는 경우, 자음을 중복해서 쓰고 “~ing”를 붙인다.
Other verbs can add “~ing” at the end of the verb.
다른 동사들은 “~ing”를 동사 뒤에 붙이면 된다.
eat ->eating. jump-> jumping
규칙을 영어로 설명하기 위해서는 규칙적인 음률 성이 있을 때 말하기 쉽고 외우기도 쉽다. 문형적으로 어색할 수 있지만 영어를 모국어로 하지 않는 영어를 이제 배우기 시작한 아이들에게는 필요한 요소이다.

‘finishes with ’는 왼손은 손바닥이 안쪽을 향하게 세우고 오른 손끝으로 왼손의 손바닥을 마주친다.
알파벳 e는 한 손으로 손끝끼리 마주치게 한다. ‘ drop ’은 만들었던 알파벳 e를 아래로 떨어트린다.
Rule 2: When the verb finishes with consonant and “-ie”, drop the “-ie” and add “ying”.
Tie -> tying die -> dying
알파벳 ie는 한 손의 새끼 손가락만 펼치고 다음으로 알파벳 e를 만들면 된다.
Rule 3: When the one-syllable verb finishes with one vowel and one consonant, double the consonant and add “~ing”.
Hug -> hugging cut ->cutting
한 손의 검지만 펼쳐 숫자 1의 느낌을 만든다. ‘one vowel ’ 은 검지로 숫자 일을 만든 후 다시 검지와 중지를 펼쳐 v를 만든다. ‘one consonant’ 은 검지로 숫자 일을 만든 후 한 손을 오므려 C 모양을 만단다. ‘double’ 은 손으로 만든 C를 두 번 공중을 향해 쳐준다.

‘Other verbs’는 한 손으로 만든 V를 좌우로 흔들어 준다. ‘at the end of the verb ’는 한 손으로 만든 V를 어깨너머에서 자신의 몸 앞쪽으로 뻗어 준다.)
영어의 스펠링 규칙을 제대로 이해하기 위해서는 자음과 모음 그리고 음절이라는 개념이 선행되어야 한다. 이미 그전 수업에도 배웠지만 아이들과 스펠링 규칙 본 수업을 들어 가지전에 다시 한번, 모음, 자음, 음절에 대한 내용을 상기시켜 준다. 영어의 현재 진행형 규칙형을 이해했다면 다음과 같이 영어로 말할 수 있어야 한다. 그리고 규칙이 이해 후 관련된 내용을 제대로 적용할 수 있는지 다양한 형태의 진행형 만들기 연습 문제를 풀어 본다면 완전한 자기 지식으로 소화를 해 낼 것이다.
