‘백작과 공작이 만났다’, 이것은 재즈사에 있어서 최고의 ‘빅매치’였다. ‘람보와 코만도’, ‘타이슨과 맥그리거’가 함께 등장해도 이 그림보다 더 큰 강렬함을 전할 수는 없다. 스윙 시대를 상징하는 빅밴드의 영웅이었던 듀크 엘링턴과 카운트 베이시가 번갈아가며 리드하는 피아노는 서른 명이 넘는 대규모 악단과 함께 지상 최대의 명연을 담아내는데 성공했다.
앨범에는 ‘Basie, Duke & Billy’를 의미하는 ‘BDB’ 등 총천연색의 색감을 지닌 환희 가득한 8곡이 수록되어 있다. 듀크 엘링턴과 카운트 베이시 악단을 상징하는 테마곡이라 할 수 있는 ‘Take The "A" Train’과 ‘Jumpin' At The Woodside’은 이전보다 더 유려하고 유연한 맥을 짚어냈다. 두 악단의 연주가 좌우로 나뉘어 펼쳐지는 ‘Battle Royal’, 무엇보다 ‘Corner Pocket’과 ‘Wild Man‘의 광폭한 전개는 압권이다. 1961년 이전과 이후 재즈의 즐거움을 논할 때 결코 놓칠 수 없는 작품임에 분명하다.
