밖으로의 뜻을 가진 extro와 같은 의미이면서 더 많이 쓰이는 접두사가 있다. 바로 extra. 단역배우를 엑스트라라고 하는데 바로 이 extra다. 접두사로도 많이 사용되지만 그 자체로 명사, 형용사, 부사도 된다.

extraordinary : 특별한, 특출한. extra + ordi(row, arrangement) : 줄을 벗어났으니 두드러진 특징이 있을테다.

extraterrestrial : 외계인, 외계의. extra + terrestrial(earth) 지구 밖이니까 외계라는 뜻이 나온다. 우리가 아는 영화 ET가 바로 이 단어의 약어다. terrestrial에 earth 의미가 있는 건 terrestrial이 대지의 여신 terra에서 유래했기 때문. terrestrial의 반대어로 하늘의, 천상의에 해당하는 단어는? 로마신화 하늘의 신 Caelus에서 유래한 Celestial.

extravagant : 사치스러운, 낭비하는. extra + vag(wander)+ant(형용사형접사) : 방랑을 과하게 하면 합리적인 선을 넘어가게 된다. 그래서 선을 넘게 되고, 여기서 사치스러운이라는 의미로 발전했다. vag는 wander의 뜻이 있는데 방랑자 vagabond의 어근이 바로 vag다.
