어근으로 영어 단어 공부하기 1/17일

“1일 어근 1개면 1년에 영어단어 1000개를 외운다.”

몇 일전 intro를 공부할 때 introspect를 외웠다. intro (inward) + spect(look)이라 자아성찰의 뜻이 된다고. ‘보다’ 뜻을 가진 어근이 몇 개 있는데 오늘은 그 중 spec을 공부하려 한다.

spec-/spek

circumspect : 신중한. circum(around) + spect(look). 무엇인가 결정을 내릴 땐 상황을 다 둘러봐야 한다.

spectacle : 볼거리. 영화가 스펙타클하다고 할 때 그 스펙타클. 볼만하다는 말에서 나온 것 같다.

inspect : 조사하다. in+spect 안을 들여다보니 조사하다의 뜻이 되는 건 수학 공식 같음.

이밖에 기본 단어로 respect, prospect 도 있다. spec은 어형도 다양해서 pic, scope, spex, spi 등으로 단어에 많이 사용된다. 내일은 spec의 다른 유형의 단어들을 살펴보겠다.
