오늘은 어제에 이어 spec과 관련한 단어를 외워보자. 어제 이야기 했듯이 spec은 spic, scope, spex, spy 등 다양한 어형을 가지고 있다. 그중 자주 쓰는 단어를 소개한다.

spec-/spek

perspicacious : 통찰력이 있는, 명민한. per(through) + spic(look) + acious. 꿰뚫어 보니 통찰력이 있고 명민한 뜻이 나온다.

despise : 경멸하다. de(down) + spi(look) + se 아래로 내려본다는 뜻.

telescope : 망원경. tele(far) + scope (look) 멀리 볼 수 있는 도구가 바로 망원경. 그렇다면 멀리 있는 소리를 듣는 것은? telephone. 멀리 있는 이미지를 보는 것은? television. 마지막으로 멀리 있는데도 느끼는 것을 무엇이라고 하는가? telepathy. 모두 tele가 far의 뜻이 있기에 나온 단어들이다.

추가로 telescope이 동사로도 쓰이는 데 ‘시간이나 공간을 단축시키다’, ‘일부분이 포개져 짧아지다’의 뜻이 있다.
