캐나다와 한국의 사소한 비교(1)
일반적으로 자기가 살던 나라에서 다른 나라를 여행하거나 거주할 때, 세 달 정도면 새로움을 잃어버린다고 한다. 세 달 정도 지나면 이방인으로서 새롭게 보이던 부분들이 안보이기 시작한다는 얘기가 되겠다. 캐나다가 한국보다 낫다는 얘기를 많이 하는데, 과연 그럴까? 사람마다 상황마다 다르겠지. 다만 나그네와 이방인으로서 시각을 잃어버리기 전에 삶에서 느끼는 두 나라의 차이점, 그 중에서도 참 사소해 보이는 점을 굳이 비교해 보자. 너무 늘어 놓으면 지루할테니, 한 번에 다섯 개씩만. 물론 그것도 지극히 내 개인적인 경험이 바탕이 된 주관적인 비교가 되겠지만.
첫째, 문의 열리는 방향이 규칙적이다. 한국에서는 건물에 들어갈 때, 문을 당겨보기도 하고 밀어 보기도 해야 한다. 문이 열리는 방향이 건물마다 다르기 때문이다. 그런데, 캐나다에서는 건물의 문 열리는 방향이 일정한 것 같다. 건물 안으로 들어갈 때, 문을 당겨야 열린다. 반대로 건물 밖으로 나갈 때는 문을 밀고 나간다. 아마도 갑작스럽게 건물 밖으로 뛰쳐 나갈 상황, 예를 들어 테러나 총기난사 같은 사고를 대비한게 아닐까 싶은데 정확한 이유는 모르겠다. 반대로 건물 앞에서 문들은 복도에서 각 방으로 열리게 되어 있다. 반대라면 복도를 지나는 사람들이 갑작스럽게 열리는 문에 부딪혀 다칠 수 있기 때문일 것으로 짐작한다. 간단한 룰이지만 모든 건물이 같은 룰을 지키면 편리하고 안전한 것 같다. 문과 관련해서 다른 점 한가지, 캐나다에서는 앞 사람이 뒤에 사람이 오나 살펴보고 문을 잡아준다. 물론 반드시 고맙다, 괜찮다 인사를 하고.
둘째, 식품의 성분표시는 오히려 한국이 좀 더 철저하다. 캐나다에서는 식품성분표시에서 함량 표시가 안되어 있다. 거기에 주료 성분의 원산지 표기가 잘 안되어 있다. 반면 한국에서는 주요 성분이 전체 식품에서 몇%가 되는지 표기해야 하고, 그 성분의 원산지를 표시해야 한다. 캐나다에서 식료품을 살 때, 이 정보가 없어서 답답한 경우가 많았다. 유기농 음료라고 해서 사먹었는데, 가짜 과일향이나 두유향을 첨가한 음료였다. 완전 속은 기분?
셋째, 캐나다에는 나사가 다양해서 불편하다. 한국에 나사는 +나 -가 대부분인 반면, 캐나다는 사각과 육각, 별모양의 육각, 심지어는 조이기는 편하고 빼기는 매우 어렵게 생긴 이상한 물결모양의 나사도 있다. 한국에서는 +, - 겸용 드라이버 하나만 사면 대부분의 나사를 조이고 풀 수 있는데, 캐나다에서는 사이즈별로 모양별로 공구가 다 있어야 한다. 공구값은 또 얼마나 비싼지.
넷째, 캐나다의 재활용품 분리수거는 한국보다 엉성하다. 예전에 한국의 재활용품 재사용비율이 여타 선진국에 비해 높은 편이라는 기사를 본 적이 있다. 한국에서는 비닐, 스티로폼, 공병과 잡병, 캔과 금속, 종이, 플라스틱, 음식물쓰레기, 불연성폐기물, 태우는 쓰레기 등 약 9종으로 분류하는데, 캐나다에서는 그냥 종이, 캔과 금속, 병, 음식물, 나무와 낙엽, 나머지 등 약 6종으로 분류된다. 깨진 유리나 비닐, 스티로폼도 그냥 기타로 분류해서 검은 비닐에 버리는데, 철저히 분리배출을 지켜왔던 나는 왠지 그렇게 내놓으면 환경을 망치는 것 같은 미안함이 느껴진다.
다섯째, 캐나다에서는 환불이 쉽다. Costco의 경우는 한달 이내, No-Frills의 경우는 1주일 이내에 환불을 해 준다. Costco에서 HP잉크젯 프린터를 사서 포함된 정품잉크를 뜯어서 설치해서 사용하다가 바꾸러 갔다. 고장났느냐고 묻기만 한다. 아니라고 생각보다 안쓰게 된다고 말했다. 아무것도 묻지도 따지지도 않고 그냥 바꿔준다. 샀을 때 담겨있던 종이상자에 담아 갔는데, 심지어 상자를 열어 물건을 확인해 보지도 않는다. 한국 같았으면, 정품인증 태그나 포장을 뜯는 순간 고장이 아니면 안바꿔준다고 했을거다. 물론 모든 상점에서 환불을 다 해주는 것은 아니다. 한국의 다이소 같은 Dollararma는 안해주더라.

Usually if you travel or live in another country, after 3 months, you will lose your curiosity or interest to find something new. You are going to adapt to your new environment over time. Many Koreans say that Canada is better than Korea, is it right? It can be different for different situations. Anyway before I lose my view point as a stranger or a foreigner, I’d better tell you about the differences between Korea and Canada, especially just five tiny things at once. They will be very subjective contrasts.
First, in most cases, doors of buildings or rooms open in the same direction in Canada. If I come in a building in Korea, I have to decide to push or pull because opening directions of doors are different in each building. Fortunately I can open just once, or unfortunately I have to try twice. However, in Canada, if you come in a building, you only need to pull a door. From a lobby to a room, you have to push. In my guess, the gate opening direction might be planned that people go outside easily and quickly in emergency. On the other hand, the door opening direction between the lobby and rooms might be designed for passengers’ safety. If a door of a room is open outside, passengers on the lobby will be hit with the door. It is just an easy rule, but convenient and safe. In addition, if you pass through a door, the person in front of you keeps the door for you, and you say “Thank you.”, and then he or she says “You’re welcome.” That is beautiful consideration.
Second, labeling ingredients of food is more precise in Korea than in Canada. I can’t see content percentages of food and origins of ingredients in Canada. Once we bought organic drinks and soymilk, yet they were added some artificial flavors. I felt cheated.
Third, mostly there are two kinds of screws in Korea: a cross head screw and a slotted head screw. Otherwise, in Canada, here are different types of screws: a cross head screw and a slotted head screw, a square head screw, a hexagon head screw etc. , so it isn’t convenient. In Korea, I just need a flat-head screwdriver and a phillips screwdriver or only a two-way screwdriver, yet, in Canada, I need all kinds of screwdrivers in every size and every shape. Furthermore, the price of tools is very expensive.
Fourth, separating of the recyclable waste is simpler in Canada than in Korea. Formerly, I read an article that recycling rate of waste in Korea is higher than other developed countries. In Korea, I have to separate vinyl, stylofoam, bottles, cans, papers, plastics, food waste, nonflammable waste and combustible waste. But now I separate just bottles, cans, papers, plastics, fallen leaves and wood branches, food waste and combustible waste. When I put broken glasses, vinyl and stylofoam into black vinyl bag, I feel guilty as if I ruin our environment.
Fifth, returning purchases is easy in Canada. We can return before a month in Costco and a week in No-Frills. I went to Costco, because I needed to return my HP inkjet printer which used in almost a month with its ink. She just asked if it was broken, and then I said that I didn’t use often. There are no more questions, she just returned the printer, even though she didn’t check the printer. If I bought it in Korea, they wouldn’t refund it except Costco unless it was broken. Not every stores do that in Canada. Dollarama which is like Daiso in Korea doesn’t return.
