오델로와 이야고가 관객들을 바라보며 서로 대화한다.
오델로 이게 무슨 소리죠? What noise is this?
이야고 번화한 이 도시에는 수많은 짐승들, 수많은 문명화된 괴물들이 있죠. There’s many a beast then in a populous city, and many a civil monster.
오델로 (관객들을 가리키며) 그들인가요? Is it they?
이야고 그렇다고 말씀드려야 겠군요. I may say so in this respect.
오델로 당신은 나를 고문대에 올려놓는군요. Thou hast set me on the rack.
이야고 저는 당신의 자유롭고 고귀한 본성이 자신의 관대함 때문에 악용당하는 걸 원치 않습니다. 조심하세요. 저는 우리나라 사람들의 성질을 잘 압니다. I would not have your free and noble nature, out of self-bounty, be abused; look to’t. I know our country disposition well.
오델로 끔찍하네요. ’Tis monstrous.
이야고 맞아요, 그들은 비열하고 틀려먹었어요. Why, say they are vile and false.
오델로 사실이에요. Indeed!
이야고 바보에게 젖이나 빨리고 하찮은 일이나 계산하죠. To suckle fools and chronicle small beer.
오델로 맞아요. ’Tis true.
이야고 그들은 염소처럼 혈기왕성하고, 원숭이처럼 흥분하고, 발정난 늑대처럼 음탕하고, 만취한 멍청이처럼 어리석다니까요. Were they as prime as goats, as hot as monkeys, as salt as wolves in pride, and fools as gross as ignorance made drunk.
오델로 확실해요. That’s certain.
이야고 음란하다는데 이 손을 걸죠. 욕망과 음탕한 생각의 서사의 목록이자 더러운 서막입니다. Lechery, by this hand; an index and obscure prologue to the history of lust and foul thoughts.
오델로 맞아요. 네, 맞아요. Indeed! ay, indeed.
이야고 고양이와 눈먼 강아지를 물에 빠뜨려 죽이구요. Drown cats and blind puppies.
오델로 네. Ay.
이야고 그렇게 돈을 벌어들이죠. Therefore make money.
오델로 정말입니다. Most veritable.
이야고 예의바르고 좋은 사람인 척 하는 것 이상의 양심은 없습니다. No further conscionable than in putting on the mere form of civil and humane seeming.
오델로 당신은 현명하군요. 그렇고말고요. O, thou art wise; ’tis certain.
이야고 그들에게 최고의 양심이란 일은 저지르면서 들키지 않는 거랍니다. Their best conscience is not to leave’t undone, but keep’t unknown.
오델로 악마는 그들의 덕을 시험하고, 그들은 신을 시험하죠. The devil their virtue tempts, and they tempt heaven.
이야고 당신 말이 맞아요. 정말 사실입니다. You say true; ’tis so, indeed.
오델로 (관객들을 가리키며) 아, 작은 바람에도 재빨리 날아오르는 도살장의 여름 파리들 같아요. O, ay; as summer flies are in the shambles, that quicken even with blowing.
이야고 제가 잠이 들어야 조용해진다니까요. I find it still, when I have list to sleep.
오델로 (관객들에게 주먹을 휘두르며) 해마다 내가 겪어 온 전투들, 포위 공격들, 행운과 불행들. From year to year, the battles, sieges, fortunes, that I have passed.
이야고 나도 그 사정을 잘 알고 있습니다. For, I do know, the state.
오델로 그래서 내가 전쟁과 전투의 공훈 외에는 이 거대한 세상에 대해 아는 것이 적은 겁니다. And little of this great world can I speak, more than pertains to feats of broil and battle.
이야고 지혜는 시간이 걸리기 마련이죠. And wit depends on dilatory time.
오델로 이곳이 저 더러운 두꺼비들이 알을 까는 웅덩이가 되다니. Or keep it as a cistern for foul toads to knot and gender in!
이야고 때때로 더러운 것들이 침입하지 않는 궁전이 있나요? As where’s that palace whereinto foul things sometimes intrude not?
오델로 정의가 이루어 질겁니다. The justice of it pleases.
이야고 그야 시기로 보나 장소로 보나 시국으로 보나 당연히 이런 사단이 일어나지 않아야죠. 하지만 일이 이렇게 된 바에야 해결책을 강구해야 합니다. As the time, the place, and the condition of this country stands, I could heartily wish this had not befallen; but, since it is as it is, mend it for your own good.
오델로 어떻게요? What then?
이야고 문을 잠가놓았나요? Are your doors lock’d?
오델로 네, 방금요. Yes, presently.
이야고 (관객들을 가리키며) 문 앞에들 있네요. 들어오라구 하세요. Here at the door; I pray you, call them in.
오델로 진심이에요? Are you sure of that?
이야고 제가 보장하죠. I warrant thee.
오델로 당신은 성 베드로와 반대로 일을 하는 군요. You, that have the office opposite to Saint Peter.
이야고 (관객들을 가리키며) 오, 그들은 우리의 친구들이에요. O, they are our friends.
오델로 날 속이려는 건가요? False to me?
이야고 이 친구들도 영혼을 가지고 있어요. 나도 그들 중 한 명이구요. These fellows have some soul; and such a one do I profess myself.
오델로 친절하신 분. 조심해요. 거짓말에 주의하세요. Sweet soul, take heed, take heed of perjury.
이야고 나는 다른 사람들보다 훨씬 더 악당인걸요. I am a very villain else.
오델로 믿을 수 없어요. I’ll not believe’t.
이야고 나는 언제나 바보를 내 지갑으로 만들죠. Thus do I ever make my fool my purse.
오델로 고백인가요. confessions.
이야고 나는 매춘부에대한 열망 때문에 물에 몸을 던질 수도 있고, 인간성을 버리고 개코원숭이같은 짓거리도 할 수 있습니다. I would drown myself for the love of a guinea-hen, I would change my humanity with a baboon.
오델로 당신은 당신 친구를 배반하는 군요. Thou dost conspire against thy friend.
이야고 당신도 그에 못지않잖아요. Thine hath no less reason.
오델로 뭐라고요? What dost thou say?
이야고 (관객들을 가리키며) 그들도 그것을 알고 있죠. And they know’t.
오델로 제발 부탁하건데 문을 잠그고 우리의 비밀을 누설하지 마세요. I pray you, turn the key and keep our counsel.
이야고 현재의 삶의 필요성 때문에 나는 관심을 보이고 애정을 표시해야 해요. 그것이 실제로는 표시일 뿐이지만요. Yet, for necessity of present life, I must show out a flag and sign of love, which is indeed but sign.
오델로 그대로 있는 게 더 나아요. ’Tis better as it is.
이야고 그럴 수도 있죠. 하지만 어떻게요? 어떻게 만족할 수 있을까요? 감독관처럼 멍하니 보고만 있겠다는 말씀입니까? And may: but, how? How satisfied? Would you, the supervisor, grossly gape on?
오델로 우리는 사리 분별을 넘지 말고 점잖게 있어야 해요. Let’s teach ourselves that honorable stop, not to outsport discretion.
이야고 오늘은 환락의 밤인걸요. (관객들을 가리키며) 저 친구들도 그걸 원하고 있어요. ’Tis a night of revels: the gallants desire it.
오델로 뭐, 지금요? What, now?
이야고 그렇게 하지 않으면 나는 당신이 적개심만 가득하고 사람다운 점이라고는 하나도 없다고 생각할 겁니다. Or I shall say you are all in all in spleen, and nothing of a man.
오델로 그건 내가 세월의 계곡으로 쇠퇴했기 때문인지도 몰라요. Or for I am declined Into the vale of years.
이야고 재미를 본 뒤 정욕이 식어졌을 때, 다시 불을 당겨 포만감을 줄만한 새로운 정욕을 불러 일으키려면, 사랑스러움이 있어야 하고, 나이와 예의와 아름다움에 대한 감흥이 있어야 하죠. When the blood is made dull with the act of sport, there should be, again to inflame it and to give satiety a fresh appetite, loveliness in favor, sympathy in years, manners and beauties.
오델로 지혜와 창의력이 높고 풍부하시군요. Of so high and plenteous wit and invention.
이야고 그러니 더 이상 반대하지 마요. Exclaim no more against it.
오델로 괜찮을까요? Were’t good?
이야고 이리 와요. 당신이 용감하다면 말이죠. Come hither. If thou be’st valiant.
오델로 내가 그걸 따르면 어떻게 되는 거죠? What if I do obey?
이야고 오늘밤 지켜보세요. 제 말대로 하세요. Watch you to-night; for the command, I’ll lay’t upon you.
오델로 나도 해낼 수 있을까요? Yet could I bear that too.
이야고 당신은 만족할 겁니다. And you shall be satisfied.
오델로 그럼 당신과 함께 할게요. And go with you.
이야고 (관객들을 가리키며) 고귀하고 충만한 영혼들, 멀리 떨어져서도 명예를 지키고 있는 그들, 전쟁에 휩싸인 섬의 본질 속에서 나는 오늘 밤 넘쳐흐르는 잔에 취해있어요. 그들도 지켜보고 있습니다. Noble swelling spirits, that hold their honors in a wary distance, the very elements of this warlike isle, have I to-night fluster’d with flowing cups, and they watch too.
오델로 (관객들을 가리키며) 그들도 지켜보고 있어요. And they watch too.
이야고 그럼 간청하건데 계속 진행할까요? Will you go on? I pray.
오델로 그들을 안내하세요. Conduct them.
이야고 네, 그렇게 하죠. Well, I’ll do’t.
오델로 (관객들에게 환영하는 몸짓을 하며) 자, 들어와요. O, come in.
이야고 (관객들에게 환영하는 몸짓을 하며) 자, 이리와요. 놀라서 그렇게 서 있지 마시구요. Come, stand not amazed at it.
오델로 (관객들에게) 새로운 소식입니다, 친구들. News, friends.
이야고 (관객들에게) 한잔씩만 드세요! 그 다음은 내가 대신 마시지요. But one cup: I’ll drink for you.
오델로 (관객들에게) 밤의 가호가 당신들에게 깃들기를 바랍니다, 친구들. The goodness of the night upon you, friends!
이야고 (노래하고 춤추며)
술잔을 흔들어라, 흔들어.
술잔을 흔들어.
군인도 사람이다.
인생은 잠깐일 뿐.
자, 그러니까, 마셔라, 군인이여.
더 많은 와인을, 호!
영국에서 배웠지.
영국 사람은 술고래야.
덴마크사람, 독일사람, 그리고 배뚱뚱이 네덜란드 사람도 -
마셔라, 호! - 영국 사람은 못 당해.
그는 널 취하게 할거야, 덴마크 놈쯤 자빠뜨리는 건 식은 죽 먹기지.
독일 놈들 해치우는 덴 땀 한 방울 안 흘려.
네덜란드 것들이 토하고 있을 때 영국 사람은 또 한잔 걸치지.
아, 영국은 즐거운 나라!

갑자기 겁에 질린 오델로가 신나게 노래하고 있는 이야고를 소리 죽여 부른다. 오직 오델로에게만 보이는 누군가가 이리저리 무대를 돌아다니고 있는 듯 하다.
